Side blog for this ugly bag of mostly water to just talk about Star Trek. Plus occasional episode reviews.

Found in Columbus, PA. I can't believe I stumbled across a true relic of fandom itself - back when you watched for 'the Premise'...

Morn's review is five pages long and nearly crashes the website when you try to open it.
He gives it three stars.
i really do want to see what the alpha quadrant yelp reviews for quark's bar are like. do they fuck with him. does he get 100% negative reviews from bajorans for working for cardassians

People are way too mean to Jake Sisko about his outfits :(( his fuckass outfits are one of the best parts of the whole show. Seeing non starfleet federation citizens. Seeing futuristic fashion. Having fun with colours and patterns. Seeing his fashion sense change from a child to an adult. He has more fashion sense than any of the muted militarised "something you could find in abercrombie and fitch" ass outfits of modern trek shows. Where is your zest for life, where is your idealism? Only Quark has more drip.

I feel like a lot of people don't really pay attention to the way queer masculinity underpins Garak and Bashir's characterisation. Like so much of Garak's interaction with other Cardassians is subtextually about his failures in heterosexual masculinity but Garak excels specifically because they underestimate him due these failures.
Meanwhile so much of Bashir's behaviour is about performing straight masculine archetypes, the British ones especially - 007, RAF pilots. He hides behind these rôles and it reeks of compulsory heterosexuality and toxic masculinity because Bashir makes himself play these rôles - be the hero and kiss the girl. He's so desperate to bé normal, average. Never think too much about who you are and what you really want. Maybe because he's terrified of who is if he isnt performing. He's been told all his life about the horror of augments, so if he ever put down the mask what if its Khan underneath.
That's why OMB fucks so severely. Its about performing masculinity with Garak, the gayest bitch around, critiquing it in the background the whole time. Its about sexualising the straight male archetype for a gay male audience.

it was a stroke of genius to give James T Kirk a bitchy flip phone in the 60's, truly amazing to watch him slam it shut like a pissed off socialite girl in 2000's teen shows

One thing that makes Galaxy Quest such a good film is how kind it is about the diehard fans, from the nerds who have an encyclopedic knowledge of every inch of the ship to the fangirls who squeal over their favourite ship, it'd have been so easy to make fun of them and portray them as pathetic losers and asocial freaks, but instead they're portrayed as sweet and earnest and having firm and valued and real friendships with each other as a result of their fandom, and being right to care about the show as much as they do. The movie isn't a love letter to Star Trek, it's a love letter to Star Trek fans.
