Essie Davis is an Australian actor most known for her leading roles as Phryne Fisher in Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries and as Amelia Vanek in The Babadook. She studied acting at the University of Tasmania and the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) in Sydney before joining the Bell Shakespeare Company. Her first professional role was Juliet in Romeo & Juliet; she is still heavily involved in Tasmanian theatre. Her film roles are primarily Australian, although her Hollywood career began with the role of Maggie in blockbusters The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. She is set to begin production on Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears, a feature film, soon.
