1. New Territory

"Going out this weekend, sir?"

The Commander of the Hunters looked up at the blonde, female Navigator in his doorway. Alia smiled as she saw Signas straightening up his desk to prepare for his first restful weekend in decades.

"I am." Signas rumbled his always-so-succinct answer. "What about you, Alia?"

"I'll be here in the Headquarters as always." She held her hands near her chest. "Somebody has to keep an eye on Pallette and Axl."

Signas shook his head in disagreement. "No Alia, you deserve a break as much as all of us. Don't turn into me." Alia laughed. "The Hunters handle mostly civil situations now since the end of Sigma and his virus. It's okay to take a weekend off. Or, do I have to force you by establishing a rotation schedule between you, Layer, Pallette, and the others?" The corners of his eyes wrinkled slightly as he smiled.

Alia grew sheepish. "Uh, you don't have to do that, sir."

"I have a hunch I might have to; you've developed some of my bad habits." Signas huffed a short laugh as Alia's sheepishness flourished.

"A-anyway," Alia quickly changed the subject. "Will you be seeing Sirena this weekend?"

"Hm? Why would you think that?" He looked at Alia expectantly.

Alia smiled. "Oh Commander, your crush on your ex-intern was very obvious and her crush on you was just the same. Sometimes, I hear you talking to her on the phone and you're talking to her for a long time."

Signas raised a brow in suspicion. "Alia, were you spying on me?"

"Not at all!" Alia quickly threw her hands up in defense. "When we had to work together for the Navigator audit, sometimes your phone would ring and you'd look up to see who was calling and I saw you smile. You never do that. And, when I leave after any of our meetings, I heard you dial and the way I heard you speak sounded affectionate."

The Commander of the Hunters became thoughtful. "Hmm... so, you were spying..."

"Aah! I wasn't!"

Signas waved it off. "Don't worry about it, Alia. I know you won't go around the base telling everyone about that. I trust you wholeheartedly." He stared at her. "I can, right?"

"Definitely, sir!!"

Signas smiled warmly. "Very good. I can always rely on you, Alia." As he began to leave, he patted her on the shoulder. "Now, take it easy this weekend." Alia watched him go and she stood there for a moment before closing his door.

"Thing is, the both of you were already kind of found out a while back..."

"Ms. Hellerman, do I look okay?"

An olive-skinned young woman with fluffy and wavy dark hair did a quick twirl for the grouchy-looking older woman behind the desk in the apartment lobby. The older woman dramatically posed as if thinking critically.

"You look fine, girl! You're too uptight about some "boy." Ms. Hellerman waved Sirena off with a huff. "Kids these days... especially the girls! So wound up over some boy! Are you even sure he cares for you as much as you care for him?"

"Of course!" Sirena chirped. "And, he's not a boy! He's a commander!"

"Whatever; commander or not, you can't be this wound up for anybody! You'll fall to pieces as soon as you find that dog with another girl and y'know why?" She did not give Sirena any time to answer. "Because you're getting too wound up! And, you better not even think about giving your virtue away!"

Sirena slumped. "Wha- Ms. Hellerman, please! And...and - wait - how do you even know I'm a virgin? What if I'm not?"

The older woman crossed her slim arms. "Child, please. It's so obvious you're whole. I mean, look at you. C'mon."

Sirena became dour. Ms. Hellerman grinned.

At this moment, the door opened and a tall Reploid male calmly entered. Ms. Hellerman turned her attention to the newcomer. "Good morning, how can I help you?" She greeted in deadpan. The Reploid smiled and looked at Sirena.

"Good morning." He rumbled gently. "I'm here for her." The Commander approached a blushing Sirena, took her hand, and kissed the back of it. Ms. Hellerman scoffed.

"Oh ho ho, yeah, that's how they first show themselves. Then, before you know it, they're cheating on you and getting their mistress pregnant! What a load of bull-"

"Let's get out of here." Sirena quickly took Signas' hand and exited the building. Once outside, Sirena hugged his midsection as she was a few feet shorter than the Commander. After all, nearly everybody was.

"She was friendly," Signas mentioned thoughtfully and sarcastically. "Does she own the building?"

Sirena looked up at her beau. "Ms. Hellerman? No, no. She just works there. The landlady lives in a different region and she comes by sometimes. She's very sweet. She loves Reploids and allows them to rent."

"That's good to hear," Signas said as he bent down to a knee to properly embrace his belle. "How've you been? How do you like your new job?"

Sirena gave him a quick kiss on his nose. "Fine, I guess. It's no Hunter Headquarters. There are no Reploids to talk to."

The Commander couldn't hide his smile. He loved her little kisses. "What about humans?"

"Ugh," Sirena leaned against him and he just held her. "Humans are weird. They're mean for no reason. Act all...clique-y. I mean, sure, there are some touchy Reploids out there but Reploids just seem nicer and easier to talk to. Maybe it's me."

Signas rubbed her back. "You're free to visit the base any time."

Sirena gave him a quick kiss on his neck. "I know."

The two went to a cozy café away from Abel City located in the neighboring suburban township called Ararat Village. The township's demographic consisted of young, educated, and progressive humans and mostly civilian Reploids. The township was considered to be a Reploid sanctuary - away from racism and prohibitions. This was the perfect place for what was classified as a "mixed" date.

Under the dim lighting of the café, the couple enjoyed their brunch as they sat at a booth near a window. Although they were comfortable and safe in this place, Signas learned from a worried Sirena that her parents were planning to visit her from her older sister, Marine. From what the Commander learned, Sirena's father, called Malo, was a rather large man that hailed from Samoa and he was a military veteran. The family on her father's side looked up to the Hunters and respected all things military. They were not bothered by Reploids. Signas knew he would get along well with Sirena's father. However, it was her mother, Josephine, that he was worried about. Sirena did not get along well with her mother and neither did her sister, Marine. According to Sirena, her mother sounded rather narcissistic and was all about her daughters' appearances. It sounded like she lived through her daughters. Also, her mother did not like Reploids. Sirena said she learned through her father that her mother was "traumatized" by a service Reploid that worked in the airport in Bermuda that "attacked" a customer. Signas informed Sirena that he remembered sending Axl and his new squad to the area to investigate and leaned that said service Reploid was not infected but was just overworked and was constantly disrespected by the customers and their coworkers alike and they eventually snapped. Said service Reploid lost their job and were sentenced to a detention center and had to work through 600 hours of resocialization and the human was fined for harassment and endangering others by Reploid offenses. However, this did not stop Sirena's mother from hating Reploids for attacking her favored "rich" patrons.

"Marine is also going to come over and she's bringing Vanessa, my niece, too. I'm just happy you and them and Papa are going to be here." Sirena said as she lazily stirred her lavender matcha tea. "I'll be okay because you guys will be with me. I was never good at defending myself from Mama. I always found her to be intimidating. Marine was always sticking up for me. I owe her."

Signas took her hand and gently held it. "I won't allow your mother to frighten you. If I find her behavior unacceptable, I will be speaking up about it. I could care less about how she feels toward Reploids."

Sirena winced. "Don't do that. I don't want you to go through that. Mama is insatiable; she will love to argue with you, Signas. It's not worth it; i just have to learn to stand up against her. Especially for you. You mean everything to me."

Signas kissed her hand. "You're not in this by yourself, Sirena. I'll be here. I will help you through anything." Sirena sadly smiled at the Commander.

"Thank you."

"Hm?"

Signas, for the first time since his activation, was nervous. He didn't outwardly show it but he felt his energy core freeze over. Sirena just asked him to stay with her the entire weekend. That included nights as well. The Commander had enough free time to fulfill her wishes but this was opening a new door to his relationship with Sirena. He calculated how long they'd been together: about a year now. Is a single year enough time for this new territory? How did Sirena really feel about this?

"I don't want to impose," Signas said while taking a seat on the comfy sofa in the apartment living room. "How do you feel about this, Sirena?"

Little did Signas realize, Sirena was excited about the idea of him spending the entire weekend with her. Although she was a little nervous herself, she thought about this day for months and couldn't wait to find the right time to ask him. Truth be told, she wanted him around a lot more now because of her growing fear of her visiting mother. Signas didn't realize that his belle looked at him as a security blanket.

"No, it's okay! But, if you're uncomfortable, I don't want to force you to stay overnight. Oh, please let me know if it's not a good idea! Don't agree on anything you're not okay with." Sirena assured.

Signas watched her sit next to him and made herself as comfortable as she could considering she was a bit fretful about the current situation. He took her hand and held it as he mused about his decision. He wanted to spend the weekend with Sirena and he was also curious about this new level in their relationship. After a moment of thought, his excitement decided for him. Strange, I never made an emotional decision before... He thought.

"Yeah, let's give this a shot." He smiled and Sirena clapped happily.

"I can't wait!" Sirena beamed. She embraced him and he gave her a kiss on the top of her head, hugging her back.

"Just don't tell Papa."

"...What?"
