Story time, I guess!
The ruckus of the spectators rang in Hinami's ears as she climbed out of a rented carriage, staring up at the one place outside of the Myre that sent shivers down her spine. Less than ten yards away stood a large battle ring, likely constructed by the Vikings due to it's rather brutish design when compared to Knight and Samurai construction. People of the Vikings clans were packed near the entrance, some making bets on who would be fighting and winning today. Others amongst them were either simply conversing or arguing about something she couldn't decipher.
Taking a deep breath, the woman tugged at her hood to make sure her face was covered and hid her hand inside her cloak in order to appear similar to a retired soldier. In reality, she had a decently large sack of bread hidden under her cloak that she was determined to keep. If the rumors were true about this place, she'd need these little beauties to stay safe for a long as she can keep undetected in the main area.
Clearing her mind of all negative thoughts, the woman began to make her way through the crowds as silently as possible. With most of them, it was mere child's play getting by them since they weren't paying the small stranger any mind. However, Hinami was aware of eyes lingering on her from the occasional viking for longer than she'd have liked. Thankfully, their attention was drawn back to their crowds and she was able to slip away before they could approach and question her.
Picking her way delicately through the crowds and slipping down the stairs between guard shifts to reach the prisoners, Hinami kept the the shadows and remained hidden as she scanned the area. It seemed that they were confident with the integrity of their cells, seeing as there were no guards overseeing the prisoners. Deeming it safe to reveal herself, the tiny woman carefully stepped into the shadows as eyes fell on her.
Some of their gazes were curious, wondering how she had slipped by the guards and why she was here. Others were hostile and looked like they would enjoy nothing better than to rip her apart. However, there were a few whose gazes unsettled her more than anything. The eyes of one or two of them were the eyes of men who had been broken. Mentally or spiritually, these men and women had been through so much that they seem to have just given up any hope of leaving here alive.
Swallowing the lump in her throat, the woman carefully moved her arm and held the bag in the arm that was initially inside of the sleeve. "If you lot will stay quiet...I've brought food." The last three words immediately caught the prisoners' attention, as their eyes brightened at the prospect of food.
The sight tore at Hinami's heart as she went to each cage, squatting down to the prisoner's levels as she carefully handed them each a small loaf of bread. Some were completely silent in accepting their gifts, a nod of acknowledgement being all she received. Others spilled their thanks and were easy to talk to, despite having a language barrier for some of them. No matter, the thought warmed her heart all the same to know that not all of them were bad. But it also saddened her to know that not all of them were bad, but were in here regardless.
Standing in front of one prisoner, however, Hinami felt an odd pressure in her gut. Something deep within her telling her to run, to not even bother trying to help this man. His very presence was intimidating, despite the obvious lack of food making him more knaught. From under his long unkept hair she could see two eyes silently sizing her up like an enemy to maim. His back was against the wall of his cell and his arms crossed over his chest, almost like he had been sleeping. She didn't doubt he had been observing her this entire time.
Pushing away her doubts, the woman knelt down and pulled out one of the last pieces of bread left in her bag and stuck her hand just inside the bars to offer it to him. He didn't move, rather his eyes narrowed as he stared her down harder. "What? You expect me to eat from your hand like i'm some animal? Piss off."
The scathing remark made her visibly flinch, but she remained where she was and spoke with more confidence than she felt. "What? And let whoever may be your opponent have an advantage over you with a fuller belly? I don't know about you, but in all my years I've never fought effectively on an empty belly." The bitter huff she got in reply almost sent a bubble of her own amusement from her lips. "I'm still not eating that shit."
Her only response was to half-heartedly toss the small loaf halfway between herself and the man in front of her. A moment passed between them before she spoke up again. "It's your choice, then. I'll be back in a week with more." Finishing her distribution of bread, the small woman hastily turned back to the entrance and made her way out.
Leaving wasn't any tougher than entering, and Hinami quickly hopped back into the carriage to be taken back to the ferry. She would keep her promise to come back next week, but with even more bread to try and feed them a bit better. But those eyes never left her mind.
