YInMn Blue!

The first new blue pigment to be discovered in the last 114 years!

YInMn Blue (for yttrium, indium, manganese), also known as Oregon Blue, Mas Blue, or Yin Min Blue, is an inorganic blue pigment that was discovered accidentally by Andrew E. Smith under the Ph.D thesis guidance of Professor Mas Subramanian at Oregon State University in 2009.

It is the first inorganic blue pigment discovered in 114 years, since Manganese Blue was invented in 1907 and patented in 1935.

The compound has a unique trigonal bipyramidal structure, and further research has discovered that the compound may be modified to create green, purple, and orange pigments.

Blue pigments, which date back 6,000 years, have been traditionally toxic and prone to fading. That’s no longer the case with YInMn, which reflects heat and absorbs UV radiation, making it cooler and more durable than pigments like cobalt blue.

YinMn Blue is now commercially available.

The story of my desk. This is not the greatest picture but I like it because it holds a lot of memories. All of the items on the desk are second hand, hand me downs or gifted to us. The desk itself was found on the street in Peckham and we lugged it up three flights of stairs, moaning about how heavy it was and how much of a bad move it was to pick it up in the first place, but nine years on, and we still have it! However it’s recently moved with us to the south coast 🌞🌴🐙 where it works perfectly in our new space. So many other things I could say about this pic! Here’s another view of our fantastic-found desk. Bare in mind that this room isn’t finished yet and mainly gets used as a space to dump stuff, like our bikes and work bags and god knows what else. We’ve not got around to curtains or lampshades or anything yet and we are actually considering moving our bathroom here (it’s a downstairs bathroom already anyway) so it’s just that bit closer to the bedrooms upstairs. Need some architect advice! Is it worth it? The only brand new item in this picture is the footstool, which we picked up in the sale bit in @ikeauk everything else is 2nd hand or sourced from a market. We got the vintage orange chair in the corner from @sunburyantiques and have layered it up with cushions designed by @jillpoole33 (my mum!) The g-plan table is a hand me down from a family friend, the white chair was left out in the street in London, painted and reupholstered by me! The curtains are 2nd hand from my parents - think they are @johnlewisretail - oh and the creme de la creme, if it’s your cuppa tea is the Victorian waxed fruit and dome! Today I went for a snoop around my local reclamation yard and saw this lovely little gem of a cuckoo clock. There was nobody around to ask about it but it’s kind of on my mind now. This is one of three games of Solitaire that we were gifted from my husband’s parents. This would have been shipped from Madagascar when they relocated to France in the 80’s so to me, this truly is a treasure. Although they take up a lot of room in the house I love them. The wood is beautiful and each marble has its own unique colour and energy. I wonder if each marble is a different kind of crystal or precious stone. Do we ever play on them?
