Initial abstractions of a small interior project in Mumbai. Our intention here is to understand the nature of internal experience as a series of surfaces in contiguous motion. Considering surfaces enables us to dissolve the external context completely, and gives us a platform for efficient interior investigation.

Budgets

As I type this, I find myself in a moment in the past, having an important conversation with my clients on their aspirations. They wished to build a second home in the outskirts of the city with high expectations and a limited budget. The dialogue was subjected around the volume and size of the building, which was conceived for over a year, prior to this dialogue. I was trying to voice out an opinion that the project was likely to not adhere to their expected budget if there were drastic changes, but, they seemed rather strong handed on their aspirations. The building finally did not comply with their budget expectations, and, now, five years later, design compromises to enable the building to finish have put our services at high risk, as the economics have not worked out. But we still continue to take design challenges to adhere to their expectations, as the clients belong to a close friend circle, and, for we know that society is a lot more crueler than economics.

C O V I D E R A R E F U R B I S H M E N T: We were asked to covert an under utilised balcony into a study/ library in a lovely residence in HSR layout. Our drive in this project was initially led by aesthetic and spatial reactions to the elements that prevail through retention and very minimal demolition. A panoramic window was first added as a structural element to hold the roof, while bringing a visual connection to the street from the study table. The shelving and storage components were treated as additions that cater to functional dualities. For example, the inclined book shelf also serves as a railing for the steps that access the balcony. The adjacent book shelf has an element of ambient lighting integrated within, that reacts to an existing pier. And finally, we added a plinth that doubles up as a platform for meditation, and sleep, by utilising the space under the existing steps. We went a little further by articulation the fascia of this plinth by reacting to the existing diamond inlays in the flooring. We are glad to have been part of this process of making. #munna #megana
