PHOTOGRAPHERS WE LOVE // Kaela Elliott
We love our Clickin Mama’s and were so thrilled to introduce you to Kaela Elliott as this months Photographer We Love. Read on to learn what moves her and inspires her photography.
Photographers we love series featuring photographer Kaela Elliott
“..the biggest challenge is comparing myself to others. As a photographer you are always learning and growing. So I work on staying true to me and what I want to shoot and just take inspiration from other photographers work and not compare it to what I do. – Kaela E.”
  Q. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do? Perhaps share a quirk or two as well while your at it!
I’m Kaela! I am married and live in Ohio with my husband, our dog, Rosie and our cat, Tippy. If you follow me on Instagram you can see my pets as they are a frequent subject
I am a ClickPro through Click and Company and I contribute to their collaborative blog, The Daily Project. I’m also a member of their awesome forum Clickin Moms and have had the privilege of writing for their blog.  I love many different genres of photography but I have a special place in my heart for newborn, child and family photography. I truly enjoy getting to capture moments and interactions that my clients will treasure forever. And I love working with kids! I have a job where I get to hold babies! Love it!Lets see, more about myself….. well I have to eat gluten free, I am a Star Wars nerd, oh and I have a major obsession with purses and camera bags!
  Q. How and when did you fall in love with photography?
I remember doing a school project in elementary school that involved using a disposable camera and I fell in love! My mom would get me a disposable camera whenever we went on little outings. When I got older I saved and bought myself a small and simple point and shoot. I loved taking photos. After I got married my husband surprised me with a new camera and I started taking photos all the time. Eventually I moved to a DSLR and started taking some classes to learn even more.
Q. Do you have a favourite photographer? How does their work inspire you as a photographer?
Oh my that is a hard one to answer because I have many photographers who are an inspiration to me. I would say Alicia Gould and Caroline Jensen have been a huge part of my growing as a photographer. Also Kellie Beiser, Megan Loekes, Sabrina Gebhardt, Justyna Butler, Kirsten Lewis, really I could list so many more who have been such great inspirations and supporters! The whole community of photographers at Clickin Moms is such a support!
Q. What was your career path like? How did you go from an aspiring photographer to a professional photographer and making a living out of your passion?
After I got a DLSR I started taking classes and learning more about how to get the photos I wanted to take. I did a lot of practicing and building my portfolio. I now take a limited amount of clients each year, do product reviews, contribute to Cavan images and do a lot of personal work as well.
Q. What does a day in a life of a photographer look like?
I try to take a photo everyday even if its just with my iPhone. I do a lot of personal work just documenting life or doing nature photography when I am not working on client work.
Q. One thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos/photography.
I wish I had started shooting in manual mode even earlier. That is when I really started becoming the type of photographer I wanted to be.
Q. What camera do you normally shoot with? Whats your number one go-to lens of choice?
I shoot with a Sony A7S. I love it! And I usually shoot with my Sony Zeiss 55mm or one of my Lensbaby lenses. I also use an iPhone 6S and Moment lenses.
Q. What is the biggest challenge you have faced as a photographer and how have/are you overcoming it?
I would say the biggest challenge is comparing myself to others. As a photographer you are always learning and growing. So I work on staying true to me and what I want to shoot and just take inspiration from other photographers work and not compare it to what I do.
Q. Inspiration can be found in so many forms. Where do you draw inspiration from?
I love looking at photography from all different times, looking through old photographs and reading about photographers from the past. I also follow many photographers on Instagram and their work is such an inspiration.
Q. Imagine you have an unlimited access to resources and unlimited budget. Describe what your dream shoot or project looks like.
How fun! Well I would say my dream shoot would include a beautiful day at the beach(I love the beach and wish I lived closer!) with access to any lens I want to use and a family who you can tell is totally in love and wants a session that is candid, true and emotive.
Q. What do you usually carry inside your THEIT bag?
In my Theit bag you will find my Sony A7S and at least one lens. Sometimes 2. You will find a couple extra memory cards, an extra battery, business cards, wallet, iPhone and of course lip gloss.
Q.What do you love most about your THEIT bag?
I love my Theit Colt bag because its stylish yet useful and protective. I love the little elastic bands in the top to hold my memory cards, battery and lip gloss! Its a nice size bag when you don’t need to carry a lot of gear and its gorgeous!
Q. Can you share with us your most favourite photography tip, tool or technique when shooting or processing?
I love to use Lightroom. I use it for 99% of my editing. Every now and then I will use Photoshop but I can do most everything I want in Lightroom.
Q. What advice would you give someone who is just starting photography or finding their way in the world of photography?
Be patient. Try to shoot often. Be true to yourself and your style. Don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone is learning and growing too!

Dear friend, . I know you've had those days where you just don't feel good enough. Trust me, I've had them too. Y'know those days when you feel like your just not smart enough, creative enough, beautiful enough. Perhaps you feel uninspired to keep on chasing those dreams because you don't stand a chance, everyone seems to be doing what you want to do. Heck, if not even better. Your thinking, It's too late, missed that bandwagon , what's the point? . The point is there is only ONE you. No one else can do it the way you will, now that's a superpower. So whatever it is your not going for, whatever excuses you have for not doing that one thing. Know that the whole world is waiting for what only YOU have to offer and no time is better than now. 5 Simple Tips on How to Plan A Perfect Styled Shoot
Have you seen the gorgeous styled shoot done by the lovely Annie Taylor Hall for our last #THEITCollective series? Read on below as Annie shares her top 5 (and super simple) tips on how to plan THE perfect styled shoot. xo
Behind the Scenes with Annie Taylor Hall for her #THEITCollective styled shoot.
Whenever I plan a stylized shoot, I have to decide a couple factors. Do I need hair and make up done? Do I need a stylist? Clothing vendors? What type of models? Etc.
With that being said some of my tips for putting together a stylized shoot is:
1 | Believe in Moodboards
For those of you who don’t know what a moodboard is, or might contain, they’re basically images of anything that fit the “mood” of your shoot. Whether it’s pictures of people, make up, color palettes, interior or exterior settings, etc. By doing a moodboard it will help establish expectations within your shoot. Typically I put this together before I contact any vendors or models, I like to be able to show them exactly what I want from the get-go. I also want to note, when I do collaborative shoots especially, I’m always open to having them dip in and explore their creative side as well, I never try to dictate exactly how it’s going to look. By using a moodboard, they get an idea of what guidelines I’m looking for and want to stay in, but feel free enough to use some of their creative ideas.
  2 | Finding Your Vendors
Once my moodboards are established, I can typically figure out what I need as far as style and models. For this shoot, I didn’t specifically plan for hair or make up to be done, mainly because I wanted to keep the look somewhat natural. (However, my model ended up getting her make up done by Brianne Baxter, who did an amazing job at keeping Kailen’s look natural and glowy.)
As far as clothing, I admire Forever21 mainly because they’re always overstocked in onesies, crop tops, high waisted jeans, and graphic tees. Both Kailen and I pulled from our own personal clothing inventory to put together the look of this shoot.
And finally, I’m always scouting for locations. Literally, always. So I knew I wanted to shoot in this specific urban spot in downtown Salt Lake. (I’m a sucker for old, worn down buildings, so I had this location in my mind from the start.)
3 | Save Yourself from Stress
A huge stress reliever is double checking everyone at least 2-3 times prior to the shoot. Planning shoots so far in advance can also leave a lot of room for error. Suddenly your make up artist fell through, or you won’t receive your product in time, etc. So make sure you plan ahead. I always plan with vendors who are sending product to send it a week prior to our shoot. I also will text or email models, hair, and make up artists making sure that times and locations are still okay. Nothing is worse than having something fall through right before it’s supposed to happen. (However, it does happen, but this way you can be a little more confident.)
Photographer Annie Hall with her THEIT The Colt camera bag in Navy.
4 | Be On Top of it
Nothing looks more impressive than returning edited previews to all vendors the night of the shoot. Everyone is still pumped about shooting that day, and therefore seeing images the same day is always fun for everyone. It’s also a great way to get early promotion, since most of them will post it. When I return previews, I also like to send an email thanking them for the contribution, along with a deadline of when they should expect their photos to be ready by. (Note: Always exceed their expectations. Some ways to do this is by saying their images will take a week to edit, when really you know it might take 3 days to deliver it instead. It’s always a sweet surprise, and leaves your vendors impressed.)
5 | Shoot Often
Most photographers are worried about how many paid gigs they may get, which is true. We want to make money most of the time. However, the more shoots you do whether paid or not, still can contribute to portfolio work. I often like to pull stylized shoots together for no reason, just to get new shots that I will obsess over for the next upcoming months. It’s also a great way to explore and use YOUR ideas, versus working with companies and doing editorials for them. You can decide what models, clothing, hair and make up you want. Also, posting new shoots, contribute to more web traffic that will (wait for it….) get you new clients. It’s true.

#THEITCollective Series : Featured Photographer // Annie Taylor Hall
We’re firm believers of community over competition and have been so SO grateful for all the amazing people who have supported us (and LOVED us!) through all these years. So we here at THEIT recently made a pact to ourselves to put a little bit more heart into the business in all the ways we can. We came up with a ton of amazing ideas we mean to do that but one of the most dear to our hearts was this idea of really creating a community that inspires and supports one another. Our voice may be little, but we know we can make waves.
SO, in the next little while we vowed to make it a mission to not only grow our little tribe of amazingness but also want to support creatives. We want to show off all our favourite people, the people that inspire us, that moves us and the unimaginable talent they have. One word always come to mind – COLLABORATION. We reached out and collaborated with a few talented photographers and came up with the #THEITCollective series.
First up, were pleased to introduce you to one of the most incredibly passionate and talented photographer we’ve ever met- Annie Taylor Hall. We recently collaborated on a styled shoot with her, gave her complete creative freedom and as we’ve imagined came back with one of the most gorgeous lookbook we did see.
Heres the first look from her styled shoot, featuring our The Colt camera bag in black and a few details she shares about the shoot.
  Photographer: Annie Taylor Hall
Who: Kailen Stucki
Where: Downtown Salt Lake City, Utah
Can you tell us a little bit about your recent THEIT styled shoot?
I had so much fun putting together this stylized shoot for THEIT. The style of the shoot was something I personally have wanted to use for awhile now, not to mention the bag made the perfect touch as well.
How did you come up with the theme for this THEIT shoot? What inspired you?
I really loved the idea of doing some sort of retro 70’s styled shoot with the faded skin tones, bright hues of amber and turquoise, one pieces, and denim. I knew I also wanted to do it somewhere in downtown Salt Lake to have an urban vibe as well.
How did you scout and finalize the location for the shoot?
A lot of the times when I’m scouting it usually consists of driving around and exploring areas that most people don’t see everyday, or don’t take the time to look at. For this one in particular, it was a location I had walked by that I ended up exploring a little bit more.
We thought Kailen was the perfect face for your shoot. Can you share with us where and how do you typically scout for a model?
To be honest, a lot of the time I find my models on Instagram. It’s a good connection to use because a lot of times models will reach out to you, or you can see through their photos how they model and if they have a signature look or style. With Kailen, I followed her on Instagram and knew she would be a perfect fit for the shoot because she fit the sun kissed natural look I was going for.
Aren’t they all gorgeous? Make sure to watch out for our next post as Annie shares a few of her tried and true tips on How to Plan for the Perfect Styled Shoot.

Travel Guide: 24 hours in Santorini, Greece
So what do you do when you have 24 hours in Santorini?
We recently got to travel the beautiful Santorini in Greece (which is still quite on top of MY must see places bucket list btw!) with Kristin Mansky of ModishandMain, as she let us tag along with her new favourite travel must-have The Colt bag. Read on  to see more of this beautiful island and find out her top things to do, see, try in Santorini in Greece. xo
    KRISTIN MANSKY //
Spending a memorable week in Santorini, Greece was incredible, but now I want to share with you all the fun you can have in just 24 hours on the island. Come along as I take you, along with my camera + THEIT bag, on a journey that you’ll never forget!
Knowing this trip is quite possibly a once in a lifetime experience, I didn’t want to miss out on ANY opportunity to take beautiful photography. Therefore, I wanted to bring my Canon 5D Mark iii with a 24-70mm lens everywhere I went which isn’t always the easiest because it’s a big camera and it’s not very light. Those of you that are familiar with this camera body and lens know that it’s not cheap and the last thing I want to do is stand out like a tourist waving a red flag that says “rob me!” BUT ….. it takes such incredible photos that I wasn’t going to leave it behind.
This is where The Colt bag comes in from THEIT. It is hands down the most stylish, yet functional camera bag I have ever laid eyes on (and trust me, I’ve tried A LOT of camera bags). Not only does it look like a fashionable handbag, but it can hold my 5D Mark iii with lens attached and I still have room for the day-to-day necessities. This camera bag is a total lifesaver and it came along on our journey throughout Santorini. Let’s not wait any longer & get this tour started!
8:30a | Get Dressed & Head Out for Breakfast
Our hotel did provide a complimentary standard breakfast, but after just a few days I was eager to get out and try the local delicacies from the neighborhood bakery. (i.e. Try the chocolate croissants!)
Travel Tip #1: Our mode of transportation throughout the week was our trusty ATV. These were great to rent because it came with a large storage container that you could lock & it made for safe travels for all my camera equipment.
10:00a | Enjoy the view and relax by the pool
Adjusting to the time change can be a bit difficult. We’d often grab an hour nap by the poolside before we headed out for the rest of the day.
11:00a | Regroup and Formulate a Plan
Before heading out the doors we always stopped in our lobby to make sure we had everything we needed and to formulate a rouge idea of what our plans were. More often than not, once you head out you may not come back till late in the evening so planning ahead is never a bad thing!
We stayed at the Santorini Palace Hotel in Fira.
11:15a | Refreshed and Ready to Explore
Now that we are refreshed from our nap, we hop back on the ATV and start exploring. The main city, Fira, is often filled with people so we liked to get out of town and head south towards the black sand beach in Perissa & Perivolos. It’s a long, beautiful beach with rows and rows of cabanas and plenty of places to grab a cocktail.
A leisurely stroll with your toes in the Aegean is never bad for the soul.
12:30p | Wine Tasting at Santos Wines
An absolute must is stopping to taste wine at one of the many wineries scattered throughout Santorini. Our favorite was at Santos Wines which is perched up on the caldera affording you with panoramic views. Also note, they know how to do a proper wine taste! Tastings are available in 6, 12, or 18 glasses and come served all at once on a tray and are really good pours. They also include biscuits, cheeses, olives and dips. I could have stayed there forever.
Tip #2 — It’s a very windy island so I highly recommend bringing a long sleeve!
1:45p | Don’t Rush! Stop and Enjoy the Local Culture
I can only encourage you to drive down random streets and try to get yourself lost because it’s almost impossible to do in Santorini. What you end up with though is incredible experiences that afford you with the opportunity to find beautiful churches and local stands selling handmade goods. Don’t rush the experience and try to embrace the local culture as much as possible.
3:30p | Caffeine Pit Stop
Between the perpetual jet lag and the wine, a little afternoon pick me up in the form of an espresso is never a bad thing. Funny thing is, I don’t like coffee but I could tolerate it in Italy and in Greece as well! They topped this one off with a big dollop of whip cream which was definitely to my liking!
4:15p | Drive to Oia and the Bay of Ammoudi

If you’re driving to Oia, keep going as far as you can on the main road which starts to wind down to the Bay of Ammoudi. Here you will park your ATV or scooter and then walk down to where you will find fresh fish taverns along the bay. If you’re up for it (and I highly recommend it), walk all the way around the bend until you get to a little cove with a large rock floating out in the water. Change into your swimsuit, jump in and swim over to the rock where you can climb on up (with ropes, steps, etc) and then you get to experience a 25ft cliff jump into the Aegean Sea!!
On your walk back, treat yourself to fresh grilled octopus and a carafe of sangria.
  5:30p | Wander Oia Streets + a Fish Pedicure
Oia is one of the most picturesque places I’ve ever seen. It has pristine white shops, hotels and restaurants and stunning views of churches and the sea beyond. This is also where people go to watch epic sunsets. Until then, allow yourself time to wander the streets and don’t leave without experiencing the fish pedicure (they “bite” off your dead skin, but only feels like tiny air bubbles).
  6:30p | Oia Sunsets
As I mentioned before, the sunsets in Oia are VERY popular so don’t wait until the last minute to find the perfect viewing spot. Nestle in because you will be surrounded by TONS of people, but trust me, it’s well worth it. This time of year (September), the sun set at 7:10 each night and blazed the sky with hues of orange, red and hints of purple.
  8:00p | Gyros + Dancing

If you aren’t staying in Oia, it’s probably a good idea to start your journey back towards Fira (or wherever you are staying) and park the ATV for the night. It became a standard routine to walk to this little food market in downtown Fira and order ourselves a chicken gyro. They were so insanely delicious I often ate 2 a day!
With our bellies full, we headed out to the bars and clubs to get our dance on! This is where we part ways because I can’t hold a camera and dance at the same time! I hope you enjoyed my tour around Santorini and can’t wait for our next adventures!
