A hill i will die standing on is that picky eaters deserve respect and accommodation and to eat food they enjoy too. Sensory issues, disliked flavors, allergies, intolerances, cultural differences, religious restrictions, moral or political choices, they all deserve to be given consideration if you know you're gonna be cooking for them and to not be excluded from the fundamental right to food & access to the many important social bonding acitivities centered around food

馃嚭馃嚫FDA advisory: avoid this potentially radioactive frozen shrimp馃嚭馃嚫
this is NOT yet a recall, but the FDA is recommending these products be recalled. when this becomes a recall, I will make a recall post. you may have seen this in the news as an advisory about walmart shrimp, but it is NOT just walmart. it is currently unclear where else this shrimp has been sold.
and to be clear, the levels of radioactivity are relatively low, but these products were exposed to insanitary conditions that permitted contamination with cesium-137 in the first place.
I (rune) encourage you to read the advisory for more context and information. the investigation is ongoing, the advisory is being updated, and the list of affected products will expand.
August 19, 2025 FDA is actively investigating reports of Cesium-137 (Cs-137) contamination in shipping containers and frozen shrimp products processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (doing business as BMS Foods) of Indonesia. The U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) alerted FDA to the detection of Cs-137 in shipping containers at four U.S. ports (Los Angeles, Houston, Savannah, and Miami). FDA collected multiple samples for radionuclide analysis, with results confirming the presence of Cs-137 in one sample of breaded shrimp. All containers and product testing positive or alerting for Cs-137 have been denied entry into the country. The agency continues to coordinate with CBP to prevent any contaminated products from reaching consumers and is working with Indonesian seafood regulatory authorities to investigate the root cause of the contamination.聽 Although testing to date has not confirmed the presence of contamination in any product in commerce, the product appears to have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby it may have become contaminated with Cs-137 and may pose a safety concern. To date, FDA has learned that Walmart has received implicated raw frozen shrimp, imported after the date of first detection of Cs-137 by CBP, but from shipments that did not alert for Cs-137. FDA has recommended Walmart recall this product.聽
the shrimp came from an indonesian company called pt. bahari makmur sejati (doing business as BMS foods). products that tested positive for cs-137 contamination did not wind up on US shelves, but that does not necessarily mean that none of the cs-137 contaminated products wound up on US shelves. the products experienced insanitary and potentially dangerous conditions regardless.
right now the shrimp is for sure sold at walmart, but like so many other food safety situations in the united states, there is no immediate list of everywhere the affected shrimp products are sold.
Consumers should not eat or serve certain lots of Great Value raw frozen shrimp from Walmart: 聽 Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005540-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027聽 Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005538-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027聽 Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005539-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027.聽 If you have recently purchased raw frozen shrimp from Walmart that matches this description, throw it away. Do not eat or serve this product.
there was previously a list of states where these products were confirmed to have been sold by walmart, but the list has since been removed from the advisory. multiple updates have been issued just while I have been typing this post. it is critical to understand that even if the list of states goes back up, it is not a comprehensive list of where the affected products were sold.
there is no comprehensive list of where the affected products were sold yet. walmart is just the first confirmed affected retailer.
FDA will continue working with industry to trace all implicated products processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati through the supply chain to gather as much information about them as possible and take action as appropriate. Product information will be added to this advisory as it becomes available.
products from pt. bahari makmur sejati (doing business as BMS foods) have been barred from entering the US until the source of contamination is identified and addressed.
If you suspect you have been exposed to elevated levels of cesium, talk to your healthcare provider.
for updates on this situation, as well as more information about cs-137 or the currently identified products, check the FDA advisory link. all quotes are liable to have changed in the source by the time you see this post.
extra tidbit: bmsfood.com is currently advertising their shrimp as being able to help prevent cancer. so...about that...
thanks for reading, stay safe and take care!

The Food and Drug Administration is warning the public not to eat, sell or serve certain Great Value raw frozen shrimp sold at Walmart due to possible contamination with Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection alerted the FDA about possible Cesium-137, or Cs-137, detected in shipping containers at four U.S. ports, the FDA said Tuesday聽in a press release. Testing on frozen shrimp from the distributor, Indonesia's BMS Foods, also tested positive, the FDA said.
However, no shrimp that has tested positive for Cesium-137 has entered the U.S. food supply, according to the FDA.
The FDA is still recommending a recall on all products from BMS Foods that were shipped after the company's shipping containers tested positive for Cesium-137, even though the products themselves have not tested positive.
The following Great Value brand frozen shrimp products should not be eaten, sold or served:
Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005540-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027
Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005538-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027
Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005539-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027
