If it doesn’t impact the rest of the story, you didn’t raise the stakes

              I recently went back to a chapter at the midpoint of my novel and changed a huge detail of it because I thought it didn’t raise the stakes enough as it was. Because of this change, I had to go through every single scene and chapter beyond that point and edit it to fit in and make sense. It was annoying, but that’s how I knew I achieved what I wanted to.

              Raised stakes change everything about a story.

              If your characters can continue on as they were, then you didn’t really raise the stakes at all. This heightened pressure or danger has to be heightened enough that their lives as they know them are different now.

              Consider this: at the midpoint, you introduce a mutated form of a monster your characters have been facing that’s more deadly and intelligent than its predecessor. It’s a super scary scene, but after that, your characters go back to their safe house to talk over how best to kill it.

              Suddenly, this new monster doesn’t feel as much of a threat. It’s just another element of the same threat they’ve already been facing.

              To properly use this element as a way to raise the stakes, it should take away something the characters rely on—safety, allies, powers, etc. Something they can’t get back, and don’t get back for the rest of the story. They now have to adapt to new circumstances, and things will never be as easy for them again.

              So maybe instead, they flee to their safe house only to discover that it’s no longer safe—the monster is smart enough to get through their hidden entrance and corner them. Now they’re stuck out in the open, taking turns keeping watch and slowly deteriorating to sleeplessness and stress.

              That’s a delicious steak.

Under the Trench Coat: Under the bus/train

this analogy is going off the rails

A few months ago, I entered a prompt on eternal kinkfest. As a result, I also had to pick a prompt to fulfill. (Side note, I think the prompt I submitted was awesome)

Initially, I thought the idea of train sex was pretty hot, but my mind kept going back to one place. I couldn’t fucking think of a good hook other than “getting a train run on” for sex on a train. The prompt was, two strangers meet on a train and start porking, not one girl opens her holes for all cummers.

As a result, I’m not actually too happy with the thrust of the story. There isn’t a really strong reason why the story has to take place on a train. I think I’ve made the best of a suspect setting, but it is a weakness.

Now the other thing I wanted to address is the timeliness of this story. While there is no deadline for the eternal kinkfest, I received a prompt fill quite early. As a result, a lot of effort went into pushing this story to the front of the line for my works in progress.

All of this is also compounded by two other factors. One factor is that I got a new job that takes significantly more time and mental energy so my writing slowed to a crawl the first few week. Another factor was that I had an unprecedented amount of time to write on the few weeks I was unemployed. While I don’t feel like I owe anyone anything for writing free porn on the internet, I do want to talk about the things that went into my creative processes.

Finally, when I did have time to write, I had little excitement towards working on this story. It’s an intensely vapid story to me, despite my best efforts to make it a technical showpiece. Since I had an obligation to finish this first then everything else, I was reticent to work on writing.

Now though, I’m in a better place in life; able to start writing stories I love and would love to share with you all.

I’ll probably see you freaks later this week as I post an older story that sat unfinished for like forever.

in conversations about sex education for children many people fall back on teaching children to recognize and, hopefully, report predatory behavior as the primary reason why this education is good, and obviously I don't disagree with that! when I educate my 4th-6th students, we spend a significant amount of time talking about boundaries and consent and drilling in to the kids' brains that they do NOT need to tolerate inappropriate touching or other behavior from anyone, not even adults who might try to pressure them into thinking otherwise.

BUT! but but but! I think it's also really important to remember that preparing for the worst case scenario isn't the only reason to educate kids about sexuality and their bodies! kids deserve to enter puberty understanding all of the changes they'll experience, and not just the growing and sweating. it's good for kids to understand the new desires they might start experiencing! it's good to know about intense new crushes and erections and wet dreams and sexual fantasies and masturbation! those things can be really, really scary and confusing for young people who don't have any framework to understand them, and it's really easy to feel like you're doing something dirty and inappropriate if no one has told you that sexual pleasure and curiosity is normal, healthy, and good.

good sex ed should help students feel comfortable and safe expressing their sexuality! that's crucial!
