Trent Reese Corkley was born on May 3rd, 1985 in Birmingham, Alabama to a Joshua and Esther Corkley. Growing up in a Roman Catholic home was challenging for Trent but he managed, always being on his best behavior and never breaking the rules. High school was different, he met a young man around his age named Finn and it was the beginning of Trent’s downfall and uprising. Finn would encourage Trent to break out of his parents mold, such as sneaking out late, missing Bible study, trying new music, and Trent loved it all. More importantly he started to fall in love with Finn.
They started dating in secret freshman year of high school. Finn didn’t want to keep it a secret but he knew that Trent had a good reason, his parents would be pissed. In school, they seemed like best friends. Trent was the school’s good kid, always on time, perfect grades, top of his class, he was well liked and had no enemies. Finn was happy for him but at times wished he had the popularity like Trent had.
Junior year is when things changed. Trent was still on his A game in school and his parents knew nothing of his escapades (sneaking out and what not). Finn got into the school’s newspaper and became a popular writer but the pain of no one knowing he was dating the most popular kid in school ached at him and that Trent could be his true-self, which Finn assumed was eating at Trent. One day one of the higher ups in the newspaper came to Finn and asked him to write something new and exciting. Finn decided that maybe he could help both of them out.
Finn begins to publish articles about this character called ‘Tree’ who is the most popular kid in school but has a big secret, he’s a rule breaker and a flirt. Biggest thing people love, he’s based on a real person who goes to the school. People love it however a bunch of rumors start to make the story into a bigger story, and some rumors are believed to be true like Tree being a one night stand type of dude and he leaves a trail of sobbing women behind who are always left pleased but sad. Finn starts to become really popular with people always wanting to know secrets and hints. Trent is happy for him, he doesn’t read the paper but he knows Finn’s work has made Finn fans.
The next article publishes ‘Tree’ as a good boy bad boy, the type of kid who vandalizes buildings in a hot sexy way and people love it. It’s an over exaggeration of Trent’s night time behavior (walking around and looking at graffiti). The newspaper team love for what Finn has done and tells them to get the juiciest thing Finn can find, photographs are even better. Finn jumps the bandwagon and joins them, trying to think of the juiciest thing he can make. At this point, ‘Tree’ has become the Trent that Finn wants him to be, no longer who Trent really is. With the junior/senior homecoming dance, coming up, Finn knows he needs to up the anticipation so that when the night of homecoming comes, everything can be revealed and they can all be happy.
Trent asks Finn to homecoming by burning “homecoming?” Into the grass on Finn’s lawn. Something that pisses but amuses Finn’s parents. Turns out, homecoming is on their 3 year anniversary. A week before the homecoming dance, Finn publishes the next hint, a picture of Tree’s hands, showing distinct freckles. He took it one night they were playing spin the bottled they had to do 7 minutes in heaven, while in the closet he snuck a photo. Everyone flips trying to figure it out. Yet no one knows it’s Trent. At one point, Finn thinks he’s going too far but ignores it. Finn even publishes a new thing about Tree’s sexuality, revealing him to be bi but mostly goes for men. The newspaper then reads, Tree’s Identity will be revealed at homecoming.
Night of the homecoming dance, everything is going great. Trent gets announced homecoming king and Finn is happy for him. They plan to have their anniversary date after the dance. During the dance, Finn gets pulled on stage and announces the identity of Tree. Trent stands still as a spotlight is shined on him. He knew of the popularity of Finn’s story but didn’t know the context but now people are pointing at him gasping and saying words like “gay?”, “bisexual”, “man whore,” “vandalizes” and all Trent can do is watch is his parents (school dance chaperones), look around and connect the dots that their son is this person everyone is talking about. More importantly that he’s gay and having underaged sex. His mom gives him a look that says we’ll talk about this when we get home.
Trent, mortified but trying to keep a straight face, just waves and bows his head with a slight grimace, before giving a nod to Finn like meet me outside. Finn gets his back clapped and everyone applauses him before meeting Trent who is sitting on the truck’s back twiddling his crown. Trent tells Finn’s he’s ready to start their date. They head to Finn’s house to change but Finn ends up falling asleep on his couch. Trent, upset with everything and lied to, takes Finn’s eyeliner and writes a goodbye note on Finn’s arm, telling him that he has to go and that they are done.
Next day at school, Trent is not seen. He’s never seen again. His parents take him out of school and put him into conversion therapy until he was 19 where he was ‘cured’.
After getting out of conversion camp, Trent felt lost and fell down into a deep depression. He wanted to end it. One night he took his father’s shotgun, a protection weapon he said, and went into the woods. Not knowing how to handle a gun of any kind, Trent fumbled through the tears on how to hold the thing after it was loaded, especially on how to hold it to end his life. Right when he was about to pull the trigger, a herd of deer ran through the woods and startled him, causing him to drop the gun. However when the gun hit the ground it went off, shooting his left foot. He’d limp back to the house and tell his parents a lie about what happened (he wanted to try deer hunting and it obviously failed). They’d take him to the hospital and he’d have his big toe and part of his foot amputated. From then on he decided to live the life that was quite literally written for him, even if it didn’t feel right, he no longer knew who the old Trent was.
Now a different man, in the sense that he has been taught that he was wrong for being gay, and his life being saved by the deer, Trent turns a new leaf. A completely new leaf. He goes to school for business and quickly graduates with high remarks. He opens his own bar called “From Under the Cork Tree” that focuses on poetry slam and drinks. He full envelopes the ‘tree’ character and even starts sleeping around, always as a one night stand. His bar becomes popular and people from his old high school often come by for drinks, not realizing that Trent is now who they read about, instead of who he actually was.

Here’s a photo of Grave’s band “Liars of Astoria”
Jacob Caluuci “Stix” is drums
Chris Mickvey “Mick” is lead guitar and backing vocals
Miguel Ángel Santos “Irony” is rhythm
Grave is bass and main vocal.
As you can tell he’s the closest with Mick.

Grave Info:
Gregory “Greg” Rockwell Graves was born May 6, 1965 in Ottawa, Illinois but if you asked him he’d say he was born in Chicago. His parents were weatherman Michael Graves and police investigator Madison Graves. Growing up, ‘Greg’ as he was called, was a skater and punk kid. He frequented local punk shows with his best friend Chris Mickvey. These two were inseparable. People thought they were together when they weren’t but would always joke ‘if they had to pick a guy’. Chris and Greg met at a local punk show when Chris accidentally punched Greg in the face. Growing up, music kept Greg occupied, whether learning Bass guitar and writing songs to singing along to the radio. He didn’t mind the Beatles nor Elvis but preferred the punk and rock songs that were slowly coming the rage.
He had a few girlfriends here and there but none that he felt were anything but just killing time. Girls he did like often grew bored of him when he wanted to go do crazy things like light fires and throw rocks things off bridges. Some girls even cheated on him and he didn’t even care, too caught up in having fun on his own to be hurt. Some did hurt him tho and he wished them the worst but he’d forget about it eventually.
When High School came around, Grave, now insisting he be called that, truly took a deep dive into music. He got a job at a local record store but was fired when he kept stealing records when the boss wasn’t looking. He started dating more but most girls didn’t like his friends (mostly the boys in the band), and would often complain that he spent too much time writing songs then hanging out with him. Little did they know he was writing songs for them. After that happened too many times, he took a break from dating. After graduating High school was decent grades, mostly C’s, the band decided to start touring.
As the bassist and singer for the small punk band, they would travel in a white van all cramped together. Chris was the lead guitarist and vocalist. One of Grave’s favorite memories is the night Chris performed in just bikini bottoms. It was often that the venues would get too packed and crowded that the cops would be called. They thought they were gonna be stars. The band split when their drummer and guitarist got into a very heated argument and fought shot other. One was rushed to the ER but would be announced dead on arrival and the other got prison time. Chris and Grave were the only ones that stayed friends. Not knowing what to do next, the two decided to join the army.
Chris would drop out to become a full time dad when his girlfriend got pregnant. Grace stayed and became a Private First Class. During this time, Grave would meet an old friend from high school, Eve Nang, she is from Myanmar. Her dad is a master chief petty officer of the US Navy. Eve was the popular girl in school and was Grave’s crush but also was bullied by her a lot. As the two are now older, they met at a bar and hit it off. She did not remember him (he went by Greg in high school). The two start to date. Grave then swaps over to Navy (on recommendation from Eve’s dad) and as time progresses, becomes a petty naval officer 2nd class. However at this time, Eve is pregnant. Wanting to be a great father, Grave works hard to rank up and be there for both of them. Chris is there cheering them on from the sidelines.
Saint Rockwell Graves was born on April 12. He is half Burmese and half Caucasian but resembles a mix of both his parents. A head full of black hair. It’s the happiest day in Grave’s life. As Saint, (Save), grows up, Eve starts to go back to her high school ways, aka cheating. Grave had no idea. He’d come home when allowed to and believed everything was fine. As long as Saint had a smile on his face and Eve kissed him, he was good. One day he came home on a surprise and found Eve in bed with another man, Saint was in the living room (3yrs old), playing with his toys. Grave flipped. Kicked the man out of the house and started having an argument with Eve and Eve was blaming him for being gone all the time and just saying it’s his fault (it’s not). She starts to lie and says she still loves him and that she’d never do it again. Grave believes her but he starts drinking.
People in the barracks start to notice and tell him he needs to stop cause it’s gonna affect his work but he ignores them. Chris even starts to worry. Grave asks Chris to keep an eye out on Eve, make sure she’s true to her word and sadly she isn’t but Chris doesn’t tell him that. Grave finds out, doesn’t blame Chris for not telling, but drinks really heavy one night and he misses a big important thing for the navy. Eve’s father comes into the barracks pissed and finds a hungover Grave and it makes the father even madder. Grave holds back tears as Eve’s dad rips into him telling him he’s a terrible father and that she deserves better than some miserable alcoholic. Grave doesn’t have the guts to tell him why he’s even drinking. From then on Grave starts missing his shifts and falls into a really bad depression.
He’s sent home one day and finds Eve yet again with another man. Grave, sober enough to drive for the moment, takes 5 year old Saint to ‘Uncle’ Chris’ house. Grave grabs his bike he’s been storing at Chris’ and goes for a ride, trying to clear his thoughts, but he’s too drunk and crashes. His helmet breaks near the ear and rips a bit of flesh off his ear and the gravel skins his face. His leather jacket, having been worn out, rips on the arms and it does little to protect him. His legs get ripped up too. A passing car sees the accident and calls an ambulance where Grave is taken to the hospital with a concussion and 3rd degree road rash. The doctors say he’s very lucky he didn’t break anything but the amount he was drinking probably saved his life.
Chris and Saint come to visit (never Eve), and seeing Saint cry and say he thought daddy was gonna die was enough for Grave to swear off drinking. From then on he decides to cut off drinking and be a good father and role model for Saint. During his hospital stay, Eve moves out and starts living with her boyfriend (cheating on him too) and gives up custody of Saint. Grave thinks it’s for the best. He wants to hate her but he hates himself more, just for almost being so stupid. Chris does all he can to help Grave get back on his feet. Grave starts teaching bass lessons and repairs at a local guitar center. As Grave gets older, he stops relying on Chris as much. Saint never asks about his mom, saying he knows it hurts Grave to talk about her but he knows Grave loves him twice as much. (Plus Uncle Chris loves him).
When Saint graduates elementary school, Grave cries. When it’s middle school, he cries. Prom. Cries. When Saint graduates high school and enlists in the marines, Grave cries. He’s so proud of his son.

Cork tree character will be coming soon once I get everything figured out for Grace. I’ve had these characters since freshman year (I graded high school in 2019) and I’m just now drawing them.
