Reflective "30-day Zizz Challenge"
For the final project, I wanted to show how discomfort can actually be a good thing. While working on Zizz, I came across articles and blogs about how getting out of your comfort zone can lead to personal growth. That idea really stuck with me. Looking back at all my projects, I realized that each one pushed me to try something new (block printing, crocheting, game & package design)and take creative risks. So for my reflective piece, I made a tear-off calendar with daily prompts that encourage people to step out of their comfort zones, just a little bit at a time. It's meant to help build confidence and try new things in a low-pressure way. I made a few to give out to people in a way to reach outside of the classroom and let people have an opportunity to get out of their comfort zone.

4D "Zizz: A game to get comfortable with the uncomfortable"
For my 4D piece, I shifted focus from physical discomfort to social discomfort. I made a retro-inspired board game called Zizz that’s all about getting people to have uncomfortable conversations. The idea was to create a fun, casual way for players to open up and talk about things that are usually awkward. Each turn involves answering questions or doing challenges that push people a little out of their social comfort zones. It became a way to use discomfort to bring people closer and make those tough conversations a little easier.

3D "A Straitjacket"
To take things even further, I crocheted a straitjacket. I wanted to create clothing that felt truly uncomfortable, and so I decided to make a straitjacket, the objectively most uncomfortable garment. It's already meant to restrict and confine, which fit perfectly with the theme. I chose to crochet it because I loved the idea of taking something daunting and making it look soft and cozy, like a cute sweater. It was a way to play with appearances and show how something uncomfortable can be disguised as something comforting.

2D "Annoying Cookbook"
Inspired by Katerina Kamprani’s The Uncomfortable, I designed a cookbook that intentionally irritates the user. I started by thinking about how "uncomfortable" could be shown through graphic design. That led me to the idea of taking something meant to be helpful and easy, like a cookbook, and turning it into the opposite. From its layout to how it functions, everything is designed to make cooking harder and more frustrating. It was a fun way to flip expectations and explore how design can create discomfort.

Last Writing initiative
1. What have you learned about yourself doing this self-directed assignment?
Throughout this project, I’ve learned that I really enjoy being creative and experimenting with new ideas. I found that I love trying different things and working in ways that let me explore a variety of styles and mediums. GD4 was such a great environment for that, and it showed me how important it is to be surrounded by creative energy. I also realized that I have pretty high standards for myself, which can be a good thing but also a challenge. This experience helped me understand that I need to keep putting myself in creative spaces to stay inspired and motivated.
2. What did you find to be the most difficult aspect of your chosen assignment?
The hardest part for me was definitely the craft itself. A lot of my projects took a lot of time and also cost more than I expected. There were several points where I hit roadblocks or had to start over, and that could get frustrating. Some days I felt stuck and wasn’t sure how to move forward. But the weekly meetings and group discussions helped a lot. Talking things through with others gave me a lot of clarity and reassurance.
3. What did you enjoy about this opportunity?
I really enjoyed watching other people work through their creative processes. It was so interesting to see how everyone thought differently and came up with ideas I never would have imagined. I truly enjoyed seeing everyone's projects on the last class. Being able to discuss our projects and share feedback made everything feel more collaborative and supportive. I felt like I was constantly learning, not just from what I was doing, but from what others were making too.
4. How would you rate your performance over the course of the semester?
I feel like I did well this semester. I gave each assignment my full effort and tried to make the most of the time I had. I’m especially proud of myself for working with new materials and trying out ideas that were outside of my usual comfort zone. A big part of what helped me succeed was the encouragement from the people around me. Their support and energy made a big difference and helped me feel good about what I was creating.
5. Hindsight is 20/20. What would you do differently, now that you've had this opportunity to work this way?
If I could do anything differently, I think I would have made one of my projects more personal. After seeing everyone else’s work, I noticed that the pieces that stood out to me most were the ones that had a strong connection to the artist. You could feel how meaningful and special those projects were, and I think that added a really powerful layer to the work. Looking back, I wish I had brought more of that personal element into at least one of my own pieces.

Calendar Prototype
I want to create a calendar that is functional in different ways. I want the calendar to be able to stand, folded up and fit in your pocket, and hang with magnets.

Week 10
This week I presented my progress and ideas for 4D and reflective. I presented a prototype for my board game design, including the basic board design and a few cards. I also discussed my idea for reflective, which is a tear away calendar that has a prompt everyday to get you out of your comfort zone. I feel that this idea is a really nice piece that wraps up all of my projects because I feel that the calendar is the only true way to get out of your comfort zone because the prompts are actual tasks that apply it to your daily routine. The whole idea of the calendar is that you take on a personal journey to reach a sense of growth as a person, and it teaches you that feeling discomfort can be a good and positive experience.
In my meeting discussion, I was given positive responses for my board game. It made me really happy to know that they found the idea really fun and said they would want to play my board game. I was also given positive responses for my calendar, and was even given a great suggestion by Abi to make a tear off flyer with prompts and post it around the school. I thought the idea was genius and I really liked the idea of reaching outside of the classroom.
2D - "Annoying Cookbook" - The cookbook is what I thought would be a physical representation of an constant, annoying buzzing sound.
3D - "Crochet Straight Jacket" - This is an elevated idea of my 2D. I wanted to create an objectively discomforting experience and disguise it as a cute, harmless thing.
4D - "Zizz Game Board" - For this project I wanted to tackle discomfort in a different way, So for 4D, I decided to create a social game that involves uncomfortable conversations.
Reflective - "Calendar" - I wanted to end this entire project in a positive way that wraps all my pieces together, and have some sort of call to action. I want to present to everyone that discomfort can be a good thing in your life and that it is a catalyst for growth.

Week 9
This week I worked out the logic and rules of my board game. The design of the board game will be sort of inspired by the board game 'Clue'. That being said, the objective of my board game 'ZIzz' is to complete a list of errands by moving to different locations on the board, and to do do, you must answer/complete uncomfortable questions/tasks. The aim of the board game to teach the player that getting comfortable with the uncomfortable involves doing uncomfortable things out of your regular routine. The board game also invites uncomfortable conversations, which teaches the player to be more communicative about uncomfortable topics, creating less stigma around said uncomfortable topics.
