• everyone on the team is injured or exhausted in some way so leader holds down the fort thru it all. once everyone is on the mend and the danger has passed, they’re so delirious with exhaustion that it takes one team member under each of their arms holding them up to help them to bed

• leader volunteering to be tortured in place of a team member. team member is forced to watch, or alternatively hours later, their torturers return the cell with leader sagging between them. shivering, bleeding and bruised, leader is tossed inside, careening into team member’s lap like a rag doll

• leader stubbornly hiding how sick they are until team member or second in command gently confronts them. leader brushes them off and tries to stalk away, but team member/second in command has to grab their arm to keep them upright

• leader valiantly hiding an injury until they’ve seen their team back to safety. they discreetly stagger off to the medical tent, snap back the flap and stand there swaying, the blood all over them garishly apparent now that they’re illuminated by the bright work lights inside. they mumble something like “could use a hand if you’ve got it” before pitching to the side, upending a metal tray of instruments on the way down

• a softer version: the “mom” friend (gender-neutral) is run ragged trying to take care of their found family as one by one they’re felled by the same illness. leader, of course, catches it once everyone else is doing better, but has it far worse. in a caretaking role reversal, the found family works around the clock to get their fever down, keep them hydrated, and repeatedly coax them back into bed when they deliriously insist on getting up to check on everyone else
