Bystander Intervention Training
so, the US just attacked Iran, and that is fucking terrible. Something we all need to think about right now is how we can stop the harassment and violence against Muslims and Arabs in the US that got so much worse in the early 2000s from happening again to people now.
To that end, I wanted to share some resources on Bystander Intervention. One of the biggest things I learned from training like this is that there are many ways to intervene, and they don't all involve putting yourself in front of the person who may harm you or others. It's ok if you feel intimidated by that because there are more ways to help! And once you do the training, it might not be so scary.
Right to Be has Bystander trainings based on the 5Ds of Bystander Intervention (Distract, Delegate, Document, Delay, and Direct). The trainings are free!! sign up here.
I took one of their trainings a few years ago (when the org was called Hollaback!) and it was really very good, they have trainings at multiple levels and focused on various topics. They also partner with other orgs to focus on specific issues (like anti-AAPI harassment and with CAIR Chicago for anti-Muslim harassment, etc.).
Here are a few more resources:
APA Bystander Intervention Tip Sheet
RAINN Practicing Bystander Intervention
I think I'll sign up for one as a refresher.

“If I have one message to give to the secular American people, it’s that the world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don’t know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same.”
― Marjane Satrapi, Iranian graphic novelist

THIS! THIS IS SUCH A HUGE PROBLEM
Be INFORMED and listen to MULTIPLE SIDES before you speak up, or just don't. And maybe recognize the importance of experts versus someone with a specific agenda who benefits from a specific narrative
Friendly reminder that you're not required to publicly take sides in any geopolitical conflict you don't understand.

I don't think it's oppressive that people complain about bi women having straight boyfriends at pride, but it is definitely annoying. "I don't feel safe because he's straight" okay and I don't feel safe that your white lesbian girlfriend is consistently racist 👀 we gone get rid of her too 👀 or do we only care about the complaints and the support needs of a few 👀 like if we gone talk people making other people in the LGBTQ community feel unsafe then let's get to brass tacks

so i have been seeing alot of "stop reposting" but i'm confused about what that means. does that mean y'all don't want people to reblog your art posts?
no, reblogs are totally fine (and are actually encouraged)!! tumblr reblogs are a great way of sharing a post on your blog while still retaining the source from the original poster. the op will still get notifications from any likes, comments, further reblogs, etc. made through your reblog of their post.
when artists say "do not repost", they're generally referring to someone downloading a piece of art and then reuploading it as their own post, thus removing the link to the original creator.
even if the original artist is credited (which they often are not), all comments, likes, etc. will go to the reposter, and not to the original artist. i've also seen a ton of reposters build huge followings off of accounts where they solely repost art because they can upload posts far more frequently than most artists can draw.
i totally understand your confusion though - back in the good old days (😂) tumblr had reblogs and twitter had retweets (both good), and the term repost was easily distinguishable from those terms. now that x (and bsky and tiktok) are calling their share function (the equivalent to tumblr's reblogs) reposts, it can be confusing to know what is what. personally i tend to use "do not reupload" now to avoid that confusion.
sorry this answer is so long but hopefully that clears things up!

2025 Tumblr: *every second post* this post might contain mature content...
The content: the most innocent and wholesome stuff you've ever seen, like boys napping with cows and the cows using those boys as a pillow.

it’s so bizarre when animated American films are set in a certain location and then only certain characters have the accents of that place. It makes no damn sense!! like
WHY IS SHE MORE FRENCH THAN THE REST OF THEM???

The older you get the more you will realize that your friends are people who have made mistakes and bad decisions and even just fucked up and hurt people.
And obviously your boundaries with your friends are completely up to you but you do need to recognize that if you cut off everyone who has done something wrong, you’re going to end up with no friends (and you yourself will have also fucked up in your life, and not lived up to those impossible standards either).
I’ve found it’s much more constructive to learn how to say “hey dude, that was massively fucked up of you,” because most people are really willing to say “yeah, it was, I need to work on it/not do it again/apologize and make things right” ESPECIALLY if they are hearing it from you as their friend.

A good rule of thumb for AI is "would you trust a trained pigeon to do this?"
"We trained a pigeon to recognise cancerous cell clusters and somehow they're really good at it" okay great, that's something that could plausibly be a thing.
"We trained a pigeon to recognise good CV:s and left it in charge of sorting through all our job applications" uh perhaps consider not doing that.

with love. you have to fact check shit. yes you. you still have to fact check shit. a lot of people are great at fact checking stuff they don’t want to be true, but somehow are still absolute ass at fact checking stuff that’s rhetorically convenient to them. even people my age, who I KNOW grew up doing internet/bibliography literacy workshops, and being warned not to believe anything that isn’t reliably sourced, people who DO harp on fact checking conservative output or whatever, are still kneejerk sharing unsourced shit that is partially or wholly untrue or misleading, because it suits whatever narrative they’re pursuing in that moment, without even a “take this with a grain of salt”. fact check!!!!!! look at the sources!!!!! yes it’s a drag!!! do it!!!!!
