I've already spoken about this several times, so this isn't the first but it will also not be the last. (Yeah, I really will not shut up about this lol)

The way the larger fandom treats Penelope just genuinely bothers me.

I've already touched on this one before, but she's either the "Spartan-trained man-punching strong dominant wife" which is one, entirely out of character, two, people only characterize her as for the sake of the weird Girlboss x Malewife trope. I mean, fine, you can like that trope, but stop forcing it onto characters who barely even fit the mold.

Or the "kind loving perfect wife who remains unaffected by everything and only exists to comfort everyone."

And it just... It irks me so bad, because why is quite literally every other character, and yes, I mean every character, (Odysseus, Telemachus, Athena, Poseidon, Polyphemus, Circe, Calypso), allowed to have trauma but her?

And most of the time, it's for the sake of making her the caretaker, the one who comforts everyone, the perfect wife and mother.

And I understand if the fic is hurt/comfort, I understand that most of those fics have a typical comforter/caretaker archetype, but, that's literally all she is.

And it just undermines her entire character, undermines all of her complexity. This is a woman who spent twenty years waiting for her husband, ten years wondering if he might have died at war, another ten wondering if he was swallowed by the sea.

This is a woman who raised her son and kept her husband's kingdom afloat, all alone for twenty years, in a period where misogyny was heavy towards women.

This is a woman who spent most likely five years unsafe in her own home, disturbed by suitors constantly trying to gain her hand in marriage. (And if we're going through EPIC specifically — this situation was much worse, considering Xenia seemed to be non-existent in the musical).

And in the Odyssey, this is a woman who prayed for Artemis to kill her.

And the way all of this is just ignored, thrown under everything in order of making her the perfect badass wife or the untouchable caretaker just bothers me so so much.

Hear me out, Penelope is the closest mortal equivalent to Athena:

She's talented at weaving.

She's really, really, really smart (duh)

She can fight (Penelope of SPARTA)

The olive tree symbolism linking to both Athena and Penelope.

She thinks up clever schemes to tough situations

Penelope is the smartest mortal. Athena is the smartest being.

But the real mortal equivalent of Athena would be OdyPen(platonic)Dio. She really knows everything when picking her favoured.

No, I didn’t do my homework.

But I started drawing again.

I played the piano again after months.

I cleaned out my backpack for the first time since the school year started.

I finished a crochet project that had been left unfinished for months.

I read nine chapters of a book in one sitting.

I cleaned up part of my bedroom.

I went on a walk around the block.

I finished a podcast episode I started last week.

I ate the closest thing to a healthy amount of food in a day that I’ve had in over a month.

I did all of these things that I’ve been too depressed, stressed, unmotivated to do for so long.

But none of that is graded, so I guess it doesn’t matter.

No, I didn’t do my homework.

I just remembered my second Pride, where I made different flag themed daisy chain bracelets/necklaces to hand out. I need folks to understand something:

They were free.

They were fucking free.

They were maybe ¢60 of acrylic yarn each at the most, and the whole ziploc bag of them took 2 hours max.

Three people gave me sad eyes until I took their money.

Someone who was clearly the mom friend of their group made me take a $5 and gave a 10 minute pep talk.

At least four more people insisted on getting change to pay for the, once again, free bracelets.

In spite of all these shenanigans, the absolute best was this one person who I can only describe as, “queer surfer dude who looks like a boyfriend who looks like a girlfriend.” I can remember nothing of the outfit, only the impeccable vibes. I did the same thing I did with everyone else, explaining the bracelets were free, and they nodded along as they took the last 6 strand rainbow bracelet. As soon as they had it on their wrist, they pointed at something over my shoulder and, like a fool, I looked.

Next thing I know, they’re running off cackling, yelling, “YOU’LL NEVER CATCH ME!” and I’m holding a fucking $20. I had to stop at least two people from chasing them, cause they thought the person stole something, and then they tried to give me money cause they thought it was funny seeing me flail over people being Too Nice.

That was the year I got reverse-robbed at Pride. I hope everyone out there is having a good time and, in particular, that queer surfer dude is out there still causing benevolent chaos.
