In remake, I wonder- was Reno coming to the church the day Cloud fell through the roof to tell Aerith about Zack’s death? Maybe to try and get her to come back to Shinra too, whether by guilt or by force.[1]
But- he cares about her he knows she loved Zack, if the dates and the waiting 5 years and the 89 letters were anything to go by. And he was on assignment to bring Zack back alive the day he died.
It would explain why the blond in Zack’s uniform with Zack’s sword pissed him off so much. He knows all of the firsts. They’re all dead. This bastard will not make a mockery of the grief of the people who knew them. Will not make a mockery of Aerith’s grief for Zack. No. This will not stand.
[1] edit: @rocketbirdie pointed out Reno was more likely primarily there to keep Aerith in sector 5 during the sector 7 plate collapse— I think this is more accurate than the reasons I proposed. I believe that even with that, the rest of the post stands. (Tysm Birdie for pointing it out!!)
