I have decided that I am finally going to learn Latin! So this week I have been working through a nice simple book called Getting Started with Latin, written for homeschoolers but good for beginning students of any age. 

I look at a simple sentence like,

and I think, The farmer is watching the sailor? Why is the farmer watching the sailor? *How* is the farmer watching the sailor? Once the farmer’s goods have been loaded onto the ship, are they going to go off to a pub nearby, drink some vinum, then do it in the back alley and leave a smutty graffito?

You know that if I ever get the hang of this language, I will be writing dirty stories in Latin. Catullus will applaud me from the afterlife (and teach me filthy words).
