bears eating children don’t mock bald prophets, kids
2 Kings 2:23-24 ‘And he [Elisha] went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.’

I was never taught, and have still not properly learned, how to read with careful, slow attentiveness; it is difficult for me to read with the goal of incorporating what I read, of writing it upon the pages of my memory.

Andrea del Castagno (1421-1457) - Fresco Cycle of Famous Men and Women, c.1449-51 (Villa Carducci, Legniai, near Florence)
The complete fresco cycle of Famous Men and Women in the Villa Carducci at Legniai, commissioned by Filippo Carducci. There are nine portraits: three military commanders, three famous women and three Tuscan poets. They embody physical strength, moral virtues and keen intelligence. The military commanders are Pippo Spano, Niccolò Acciaiuoli, Farinata degli Uberti; the famous women are the Cumean Sibyl, Queen Esther, Queen Tomyristhe (shown individually above); and the poets are Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio (also shown individually above). The choice of subject is evidence of the growing influence of humanists thought in quattrocento art. Castagno’s pictorial realism and three-dimensional chiaroscuro also shows the continuing influence of Giotto and Masaccio in mid fifteenth century Florentine painting.

A crisis of Church and State in the very Protestant town of Jena in 1560 was in part caused because a pastor excommunicated one of his lay parishioners who was professor of law at the university: the offence, he declared in public that we can learn Christian truths out of the Roman philosopher Seneca. The offended pastor probably did not know that several early Christians supposed that Seneca must be a Christian, so noble were his moral opinions. The professor’s undergraduates were incensed and when the pastor died two month later they sang a Te Deum outside his manse.
