     a humorless laugh escapes from her lips. arms      slinking around the warrior’s waist, she rests her      head against his chest and tries to ignore the ping      of sadness his words bring to her heart.    

    ‘ you? selfish? ne’er. i do not e’en think thee capable       being such. if anything, ‘tis i. i am afraid seeing sif       seemed to make me a bit envious. let us… not think       of such matters anymore. instead we should enjoy       other’s company. perhaps make up for lost time. ‘

   hands calloused from war are surprising gentle    with the maiden as theoric brushes a few flaxen    strands of hair away, fingers moving from her    jawline down to her chin with care.

   “ we should be happy for her.  for them.  and while    thou mayst not be with child now, i do not think that    door shall fore’er be closed to thee. ”  that is not    to say he thought he had a place in that future, but    he doesn’t dwell.  “ thou hadst something in mind? ”

     his words only made her feel guiltier. here was      a man who was truly good to her. who was kind      and noble. above all else, it seemed as though      he truly would do anything to make her happy.      and here she was still grieving over a trickster.

    ‘ theoric. thank- thank you. i do not deserve your       praise. ‘tis thou who art full of kindness and love       and art just… p u r e l y good. ne’er change. ‘

    the warrior wished there was a way to not have     his lady so troubled when sigyn thought of the     liesmith... or when she thought of him.  conflicted     were her feelings, theoric knew it well.  hopefully     one day she would open her heart more to him.

    “ if i was good, i would be unselfish with thee.  if i     were to let go of thee, perhaps thou couldst be happier,     and yet ‘tis i who is happy to be with thee, my lady. ”

     her love for loki had once consumed her entire      heart. her faith in him ne’er wavered. despite his      selfishness and unforgivable transgressions.      yet still, she had never ONCE been his priority.       even when the result of their love was lost.      ‘ i just– i do not understand. after all i endured.      after all the love i gave. and it cost what i had      wanted m o s t out of this life. and lo–… he dost      not give it, nor i, a s e c o n d thought. it’s not– ‘

     he had understood, for he had always looked      upon the lady from afar.  when she had been      with the prince, he stepped aside.  he accepted      it.  but if he had not, if he fought for her bravely,      perhaps he could have saved her from her grief.

     “ i am sure he cared for thee... in his own way.      thou art kind, my lady.  kind and good, generous      and loyal.  a heart as pure as devoted as thine      should be appreciated, not made to wait.      i shall ne’er make thee think i would do as he. ”

      she stays quite for a moment. the word       resonates heavily in her heart. c h i l d.       it had never stood a chance. not when        it had been cursed with such parents.

     ’ i do not wish to trouble you with this. i        know it is in the past. h-howe’er i just.–        i am having a hard time understanding        what i did to… d-deserve this f a t e. ’

    the loss of a child...  no failures of battle     or lost loves could compare to such grief.     theoric had never experienced it, so he will     never truly know his lady’s sorrow and pain.

    yet a hand pulls the maiden into an embrace.     “ trouble me for i am thine.  thou canst offer     me that much.  deserve?  my lady sigyn...     speak not with such daggers to thyself... ”
