Design for behaviour changes is a rising approaches for designers which could change users behaviours by the product. My chair is aiming to improve the conditions for people who waiting bus in Istanbul. To apply the theory correctly it is important know how the users use the product both concisiously and unconcisiously. As well as how to trigger the user to have the targeted behaviour. In my opinion, the theory could be applied to all product in different field, such as Services design and Application design (UI/UX) as well. /Yiu Hei Chan

Complexity and Contradiction theory is an architectural theory developed by Robert Venturi. According to Venturi, structure and decoration are different concepts and should not be confused. And decoration should contain elements from the culture of the geography of the designer, and the user. Unlike modern architecture, traditional elements are used as symbols in decoration and create a contrast with the structure. While this contrast bears traces of modernism, it also aims to make people question their own culture and past.
I tried to apply this theory in my chair. I decided to process the structure element in the theory as form and material. For this reason, I tried to stay in a modern line in terms of form. I used ABS (plastic), aluminum and rubber as materials.  I wanted to work the decoration element as upholstery and ornaments. In the upholstery fabric, I used ethnic rug motifs that symbolize fertility and family in Anatolia. I also used the eye motif that is believed to keep bad thoughts at bay. I think that the blending of these ethnic motifs and Islamic ornaments constitutes the traditional part of the theory. My motivation in this design comes from my acknowledgement of keeping traditional elements alive in some geographies is a necessity rather than an option.

The relation between the theory I chose and my design is the fact that they both aim to create a contrast. It may be occurred by the backgrounds, colors, materials. functions and many many more parameters. The sole goal here is to create a whole new object while adding it a new performance and showing the potential while creating a contrast in order to emphasize it. And while doing this, by using recycled materials in this chair design I wanted to underline that design and sustainability should not be considered separately from each other. In this spesicif design the tires of a car that is not used anymore are transformed into a super comfortable chair design.Designing is an endless world with endless oppurtunities and limits. A design theory is "design theory is a system of ideas that explains how and why design works."* So in this design research and design process
I tried to connect a theory with today's current circumstances such as pandemic...
In this past hard months we once again remembered the importance of sustainability and ecology. So as an architect to be, I personally always defended the fact that any kind of design and sustainability should not be considered separately from each other. Design is something that may take some references from past, respects today and thinks for the future. So as a design theory I would like to choose a theory which may be connected with this point of view.
Conceptual Contrast Theory shortly aims to create a contrast by playing with some different parameters such as the place, function, color, material etc. The reason why I worked with this theory was it's flexibility. This is a design theory which can associate with many more topics and designs thanks to it's flexibility accordingly with the needs.

Montage
I selected Montage Theory which talks about multiple meaning and function, thanks to the various and different sequences of shots. I am inspired especially from the Kuleshov effect showing the power of the montage by juxtaposing different shots while keeping constant the actor/ess’ gesture and add an extra shot so that we can guess the actor/ess’ emotion.
My design is a combined chair provides you to sit in four different angles to perceive various views like the montage effect. I add four different backside’s height to the chair so people who sits and who sees the chair can have different meanings and views.

The Reflections
In the context of movies and the directors, (and according to my field research) auteur theory argues that the quality of a film can be perceived by understanding the personal stamp of the director. That means we can distinguish the movies of a successful director by looking at the characteristics of the films. This thought is now a bit harsh but retains its essence. In design, the works of a good designer can generally be understood when we look at it because it has a specific style.
When I was designing those chairs, I didn't take out any element/function/concept. However, I added concepts depending on the auteur theory. That way, the theory adds a benefit itself: it gives specific identities to my chairs. The concept is: A group of different chairs for different directors who have a specific style to make movies. Each chair represents a unique director. For now, there are three chairs for three directors, but the number may increase. Those directors are Stanley Kubrick, Tim Burton, and Satoshi Kon.
The forms, colors, etc., may change according to each director. That's why there is not a specific form, colors etc. The technical usage of these chairs (e.g., sitting) is not important in this case. The important thing is the concept itself. That's why I made mini mock-ups for each chair (which means each director that I choose). The production is based on paper material. However, if there is a specific director who uses a specific material (e.g., metal) in his/her movies, that material can be used as well for the next designs. That way, I create chairs that represent different directors in the context of auteur theory.
With using my theory in mind, designers can design lots of products (not only chairs). This theory allows the designers to take the distinctive features of cult artists from various art fields, and "injecting" them into the design space. This "field of art" doesn't have to be just movies. There may be different fields of art such as painting, theater, and literature.

the motivator
my theory is about the understanding of what motivate someone to achieve a certain task and rewarding them to continue achieving by understanding the three types of basic characters in which one character needs a competition that Triger them to work more other type is who likes working on teams while third type likes a lot of achievable challenges so he/she feels the glory of achieving and be more motivated. this theory cleared my users' needs and expectations to be met by my chair+- and knowing the fact that i need this chair to be both a motivator and a relaxing object. its a chair + because its a chair that connect with its user with other users and transforms to comfy chair so the plus is that it is one chair for work + one for relaxing.my field research made me understand what external social forces impact on the way people behave while working beside the common need for a relaxing time as a reward for themselves after achieving something. my chair is a worker's friend who spend all day working and feeling himself connected with other workers through a tracker found on left hand side and after work its a his relaxing comfy friend who reward him for handwork that he can also see from the sensor found on the left hand side.
after understanding the nature of people while working and the way of motivation i can design any object following the three techniques to motivate them . its an clear path for a designing process knowing a concept not searching for it

Combiny Combiny is a project inspired by the endowment effect. Endowment effect theory is defined as overvaluation of objects that a person has. One of the ways to implement this effect is customization. Combiny, offers pieces that the person can choose to customize the chair. Each of these parts has a different function; like a hanger, a drawer. The parts are divided into 3 categories. As back, foot and sitting area. One or more of each category can be selected. Well, can we name the product formed by combining all the parts as a chair?

Confetti
The theories I get inspired by Apparatus Theory and The Kuleshov Effect. Apparatus Theory maintains that cinema is by nature ideological because its mechanics of representation are ideological, and because the films are created to represent reality. The Kuleshov Effect is a mental phenomenon by which viewers derive more meaning from the interaction of two sequential shots than from a single shot in isolation. The Kuleshov Effect is an assembly technique used to create the representation of reality. As with Apparatus Theory, I think the products we use represent our personalities. They say a lot about us. The reason we choose them is the reasons that come from us. I create emotions by adding features to a simple chair form. As with the Kuleshov Effect, I mount it on the chair. I combined a ball pool and a simple chair to reflect the feeling of happiness. When I thought about the feeling of happiness, childhood and the ball pool came to my mind first. This can be different for each person. So we can create many representations of happiness using this theory. Thorns and chair can be combined to create the representation of the feeling of anger. And so ideas can multiply. It becomes the representation of our personalities with the products we use. Here is my chair for happiness, Confetti.

Pronunciation Dictionary
While I’m designing this, I set out from Albert Bandura's observational learning theory. I think that pronunciation in a foreign language could be improved through observation and practice.
We learned our mother language by observing our environment and imitating sounds. The reason why people who learn a new language in a foreign country have better pronunciation is also because of the environmental factor.
This book contains words that we can imitate. we analyze the pronunciation of the word on a page. then we try to imitate it and save it on the other page. With this way, we develop our pronunciation with the observation-imitation-practice method. So this book gives us the task of imitation and practice.

EMOTIONAL BANK
The idea that ads mislead and unconsciously manipulate the viewer. 'Advertising is dangerous as it uses psychology to create emotionally charged hidden messages. Because the message is hidden, the audience's critical resistance is avoided in a minimized manner. 'Hidden messages in advertising are based on this concept and it is the practice of using words or images that consumers do not consciously perceive.
Based on this theory, I designed a bench that guides people in the right direction and reveals feelings that they sometimes cannot even notice. This bench firstly perceives the emotion of the person sitting on it according to his movements and temperature and burns the color of that emotion above. Later, on the back, it reveals a message for this feeling. With these messages, I aim to direct the person sitting here in the right direction.

The Conditioner Chair
The whole Idea comes from the theory of merging man and machine, where a man can interact with the machine to perform a specific task, in here the conditioner chair’s aim is to cool down or warm a man by adjusting its temperature and sitting in it. The word “in” is used as the chair almost contains all the body inside it and it iteracts with the person so that they almost become one, this is atchieved by a curved back support to contain al the top body, an additional part added to the seat to include legs in the proccess, and an arm covering support. In this way the user and the product interacts with each other to to perform the task and the user can have the feeling that in some way he is cooling or warming himself.

The Cheap Vanity
My theory is a theory of fashion. It was formed as a result of the effect of fashion in the upper groups and later emerging in the lower groups.  Actually a theory by revealing class differences. The situation of the subclass using, wearing, or defending objects influenced by the other class. This occurs because buyers and designers are intertwined in a mesh of a uniform culture where they read the same trends and have the kind of influences to each other. I used the throne representing the upper class while making my design. but I used plexi as a material for cheaper and availability. In this way, it was a design that could easily be influenced and accessed in its substrate. So I reduced the class distinction a little bit.

Social marketing; They are campaigns for the promotion of services or products that will benefit society. In other words; We can define it as a concept that is given to the stage where companies evolve from consumer-centered to human-centered and profitability is balanced with corporate social responsibility.
However, most of the time, these campaign or material suggestions remain only as marketing proposals and are not really effective. By using masks used in the sitting and back areas of my chairs, I draw attention to mask wastes and create a discussion environment about the social market with the production methods where the existence of this mask does not make sense.

The Handy
My theory is Magic of Meaning. It is an advertisement theory. Advertisements don't just sell products but infuse those products with meaning for the people who use them. In this way, ads influence our values and underlying beliefs. With this in mind, I thought about which keywords I could use while designing. How much time we spend with an object may be directly proportional to how much meaning we attribute to that object. So I wanted to make a project that can be used anywhere and anytime. Variability, usability and adaptability made up my keywords. In fact, by using these keywords and thinking, we can redesign everything with these features.
If a single chair is used to eat, work, or have fun, it may be easier to embrace it and give it meaning. So I thought of a chair where the user can choose where to use it and change accordingly. At the same time, I wanted to provide sticker designs and different fabric colors that the user can add on the chair to increase their active role. The more we use an object, ıt is easier to adding sense. That's why I used wood as the main material of the chair, which gets better as it ages.

Mimetic Baby Chair
My theory was ‘’Mimetic Desire’’ and man is the creature who does not know what to desire, and he turns to others in order to make up his mind. We desire what others desire because we imitate their desires. And also imitation is the basic mechanism of learning. I started by thinking that babies learn the most by imitation. So I designed a baby chair and while I was designing, I placed a screen in front of the chair that would show what the baby was asked to do in the chair and be expected to imitate the vision. For example, if the baby is asked to eat broccoli, he or she can easily eat the broccoli by seeing a baby eating broccoli on the screen and imitating it. In addition, the chair was designed as a multi-functinal chair that can be opened as shown in the images and adapted for adult use.
