"I love HIM" Timeline — Back To You Lyric Change

Finally putting this together as many have asked about it over Reddit as well.

For starters, here's a short compilation of Louis singing "I love HIM, I hate it."

Song background and context:

“On the day this song dropped, Louis told Heat this song isn’t closely related to him, because the whole album is very personal so it was nice to take the pressure off with this song. He also said in the same interview that the song represents “the most extreme situation of that kind of relationship”.”

So, L said that bits and pieces of it were of course from his own, but the level of the experience shown/painted by the lyrics of the song was definitely brought to its extreme. It's not what you would expect him and H would have experienced at this point, especially taking the lines ‘wicked games’, ‘you kill me’, and ‘you fuck me up’ too literally. Also, the ‘I LOVE IT, I HATE IT’ part of the song is supposed to show the most extreme, polar opposite of feelings.

Going back to the most common question: What's the story behind it (the lyric change)?

One day during the tour mid 2023, L either deliberately or accidentally changed it while mouthing that part as he normally would (letting the crowd sing it for him)—and he would continuously do so for various tours/gigs. You would see him switch it up in between the 3x he would say that line throughout the song, enunciating as much as possible to show how different his IT and HIM looks when he’s mouthing the words. (He could say IT/IT in the first one and then HIM/IT for the last two).

Sometimes he would look pissed (?) after saying it, sometimes not. And this is combined with side eye/eye roll after looking at someone from his side. The first thought that comes to mind is that MAYBE, someone (from his team) would sometimes tell him to stop doing the HIM thing through his IEM. But he also do it even when saying 'it' at times. So, MAYBE it's just a part of the act for that song even (a dramatic pause, if you will idk). We can't be completely sure. But every now and then he would still do it whenever he’d sing Back To You, and at times, won't. Again, it's a small thing but I thought I'd shed light on that as well.

Second question asked: Is the song about H?

I can’t think of any reason why he’d be talking about anyone else tbh. There’s no other HIM in his life. Back To You was released in July 2017, HS1 was in May 2017. In HS1, even Harry has shown us similar themes, of hurting each other and yet wanting to be with that one person still by the end of it all. I think that alone says a lot—that at some point there were moments where they had to fight even more than they already had since the beginning, due to certain circumstances that took a toll on them. In the end, they kept going back HOME.

Plus, as you’d see in the 2023 Timeline/thread from Reddit shown below, L would sometimes double down and add songs like 7 to the same set list when doing the HIM/IT lyric change.

He still does it evidently in some of his shows this year.
