“oh, sorry. i was just waiting for the bus; i didn’t mean to bother you.” since her car was out of commission at the moment, public transportation had become kayley’s best friend. thank god she didn’t work the night shift. “are you alright?”
danny glanced over at the lady, and realizing who it was. he rolled his shoulders, composing himself and sitting back in the bench. he waved her off, ignoring her question. “are you sure you haven’t missed it?” danny questioned, looking back and forth down the road. he wasn’t familiar with the corona public transport and it seemed pretty late. “just seems pretty late.”

“it is. by me.” gen hardly looked over as she took the open seat next to danny. she knew him - of him, but they weren’t close by any means. “i’m here for five minutes tops, i just didn’t want to wait for my coffee inside with the whole…” she trailed off, waving towards the crowd of people.
danny could only let out a sigh, trying to compose himself for this encounter with genevieve hearts. he really didn’t want to be making a fool of himself in front of her. he turned his eyes on her, sitting back in the bench and looking over at the crowd of people. “thought you just hated parties, seems you just hate people.”

Coraline jumped up. Not that Danny startled her really; she knew he was harmless. She just wasn’t used to him telling her to go away. “Are you alright?” was all she said, running a hand through her hair. “I just…You look upset.”
danny let out a sigh, trying to relax a little knowing it was coraline next to him and not some random stranger that could’ve shouted at him and probably made his emotions burst. “bad day.” he told her, shrugging his shoulders. “actually, it’s kinda a bad life.”

“Jesus, alright, dude.” Louise huffed, grabbing her bag and turning around to give a piece of her mind, only to see his expression. “Uh…you good? Look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
danny couldn’t help the stupid laugh that came out of him. look like you’ve seen a ghost, if only this random woman would have known how true that was. it wasn’t funny one bit, and it scared danny all that had been happening in his life. how was it that he ended up here, with a random lady telling him what was actually his reality.
realizing he probably looked a little crazy he started to shut up, frowning and coughing to cover up what just happened. “yeah, fine.” he replied, giving her a quick fake smile and turning his attention from her.

“Yea, by me.” Sam said, taking out her earphones and wrapping them around her phone. “Sheesh, you look darker than me, Danny.”
danny could only let out a huge breath of relief at seeing his best friend. “sam,” he sighed and sat up. he looked around just to make sure no one is in listening distance and said, “i was on my way home and i started falling through the sidewalk. i don’t know what’s happening, i’m so freaked. why couldn’t i have had a normal life.”

“You’re right!” Poppy quickly agreed, beginning to fill her bag with all of the berries in front of her. “Well if you’re going to help eat them you have to help make them. That’s the rule. Or you could make scrambled eggs or another breakfast food to go with it!” Normal roommates would require running it by each other before spontaneously inviting someone else over for dinner, but by now Branch was used to Poppy coming home with multiple strays each night so bringing Danny along for dinner wouldn’t be any problem.
“oh well uh,” he rubbed the back of his neck. “i’m actually a terrible cook.” danny confessed, and remembered the times he had made sam and tucker gag with his cooking. they totally threw him off cooking duty after awhile. “i can make chocolate milk, though.” he said, giving her a small smile. “or you know, i could just do the dishes after your done. i’m good at that, at least.”

danny sat on the bench, just trying to take a breather. he had halfway fallen through the sidewalk when he was trying to get home and now he was just trying not to do that again or disappear for the whole day. his head in his hands, he felt someone sit down next to him. “this seats taken.” he mumbled.

danny had been eyeing the guy who seemed to be beat up, couldn’t help but wondering what it was that kids were getting into these days. he couldn’t help the amused huff that came out of him. “you should probably get that looked at, though.” he pointed at his cheek. “looks pretty serious.”
Barrel was silent as he meticulously added the jelly beans in front of him into his bag of candy, able to practically feel the other’s eyes on him. There wasn’t much he could do to hide the visible and deep gash on his cheekbone, but he could have gotten shades to conceal the black eye, though where was the fun in that when he got such a kick out of seeing other’s reactions by it? Looking up, he acknowledged them with a wide, lopsided smirk, raising his brows almost condescendingly. “You should see the other guy…”

“pancakes?” danny asked, his mouth watering at the ideas of pancakes. “i think you should make each kind.” he told her, crossing his arms. “and you know, i might just help you eat them too.” he loved sweets but also breakfasts foods and danny was the kind of guy that could eat a lot.
“So I’m making pancakes tonight,” she started, staring down at the fruit batches before her. The farmer’s market was always the best place to go when she wanted to add a little something extra to her breakfast for dinner meals. “Should I stick with the classic blueberry add-ins? Or do I go for something more adventurous like strawberries or raspberries? Or do I keep the pancakes plain and just get all the fruit and add it on top?” So many options, Poppy wasn’t sure what to do, but hopefully anyone standing near her would help her make a decision.

danny had just been standing around, had been going detective mode but decided to just chill for a little while and enjoy the festival. amity hadn’t really had festivals, it had parades and community activities but he couldn’t ever remember a huge celebration like this. the excited girl caught his attention, though, and what a coincidence that she looked like the description of the lost princess. “i guess,” he shrugs, turning his eyes up to the sky that will soon be filled with them. “you seem to be incredibly excited, though.”
– “Best! Day! Ever!” Rapunzel giggled. She’d already had her share of cupcakes and was now dancing around the square. It was the first time in her whole life that she felt capable of being free. And on her birthday no less. “Are you excited about the lights?!”

danny was on the look out, swerving through crowds of people and keeping his eyes alert for anyone who matched the description of the lost princess. he thought the festival would be a good place to look, but hadn’t realized how many people actually lived on corona island. he had originally came to the island because of the rumors of serious paranormal activity, but got into investigations and cases were just a bonus. he loved his work, and it always felt good when he finished them.
his eyes fell onto a young lady, and he made his way over to her. danny looked down at his newly acquired phone, going over all that he needed for information from the lady. once he stopped in front of her he began, “excuse me, miss, you mind if i ask you some questions?”

the case of the lost princess seemed to be something that was ongoing for years, way before danny had ever arrived to corona. he still tried to help out when he could, and managed to get confirmation that charlie munk and taffyta muttonfudge weren’t the lost princess but that was all he had looked into at the time. now that the lantern festival was upon him, he decided he’d go back into sniffing around.
so, danny walked through the streets of corona, eyes out for any blondes girls, with green eyes that would be quite short compared to him. he tried to keep cool though, trying not to be so obvious. he had been relatively good at finding people back in amity park, but this was a different place ― with people he had never met before.
his eyes fell onto someone who matched the description, and he grabbed a drink before he headed over her way. “hey, you mind if i ask you some questions?”

artsandpoppy:
Poppy couldn’t help but frown at how harsh his words came out. He had every right to be annoyed - she had basically just plowed right into him, but it still hurt to hear how inconvenient her mere presence could be. But she wasn’t going to let that get to her! Nope, not today. Today was supposed to be a fun day checking out the island, and this unfortunate collision wasn’t going to stop that. No, in fact, it might make it even better! “I’m sorry,” she genuinely apologized, removing her hands from his arm and brushing imaginary lint off his shoulder like people did in the movies after running into each other. “Think I could make it up to you by inviting you along to join me exploring the island?” She hadn’t seen him since the day of Angelica’s party and while it’s true he could have just been busy, Poppy had a sneaking suspicion that he likely hadn’t left his house many times since that night. This could be a great opportunity to show him how much he’s missing out just sitting around at home all day. Though she didn’t want to make him feel like she was forcing him to hang out with her, so she quickly added “Unless you had plans or were going somewhere. If you’re busy that’s totally fine, I understand!”
danny tried not to feel guilty at snapping at her, she really wasn’t a bad person but her ray of sunshine personality sometimes got on his nerves. it’s not like he disliked poppy, no, she could be fun to be around but sometimes it was a lot. “it’s fine, it’s whatever.” he shook his head. “how would walking around with you make it up to me?” danny questioned, the harshness leaving his tone. he didn’t see the need for her to make this right, it really wasn’t that big of a deal. danny had been trying to get home, but as he stared at poppy he felt his heart tug and he couldn’t help but cave. “ i was going to go - or well, i guess i - it’s just - okay, fine, let’s go!” he finally managed to huff out.

danny had been slowly getting himself to go outside. ever since angelica’s party, things had been going downhill for him. he’d been too afraid to leave his house, but sam and tucker thought it would be good for him to force himself outside. he needed to face his fears, and if he felt like anything was going to happen he could just go back home. of course, that was a bit of a lie considering he had no control over when all this weird stuff happened. he had been in a sour mood since that wretched day, couldn’t help the negative cloud that seemed to follow him around.
he had been out for what felt like thirty minutes and was ready to go home, so he was striding down the sidewalks of corona on his way home. he was day dreaming, though, and didn’t see the person that was clearly in front of him. he slammed into them, breaking him out of his dreary mind and bringing him to the present. his arm wrapping around the other’s waist to keep them from falling to the ground. upon recognizing the face, he let out a sigh. “poppy,” he frowned, and realized their position resembled the dip from the dance ― but he wasn’t about to drop her this time although the thought crossed his mind. “why are you always being a pain in my ass?” he commented, his tone a little too harsh. “sorry,” he pulled her back to her feet, steadying her.
It was one of the rare days that Poppy decided to close the store and actually give herself a break. She had lived on Corona for a few months now, but still she had yet to explore everything the island had to offer. Which is how she found herself aimlessly roaming the streets and window shopping in the main village of Corona City - a section she had passed through plenty of times before but never really fully looked around in. So distracted by a glittery dress in one of the shop’s windows, she didn’t even notice someone else walking her way. “Ooof - “ she breathed as she ran straight into them and nearly toppled over. But she managed to grab ahold of the other’s arms before she fell. An apology was on the tip of her tongue when she looked up and saw who her victim was and she instead let out a loud laugh. “Danny! Why is it that you’re always trying to throw me to the ground?” @thephantomfixer

“Oh you know. Old legend about a girl dying under the tree waiting for her lover that never shows up. It kind of reminds me of a movie but…eh. I was still curious. People say it’s cursed now. If couples try to go and shade themselves, they break-up, haunted to death, stuff like that. I don’t know how real it is but yeah.” She looked back down at her camera. “Did you want to…check it out with me?”
“huh,” danny looks back towards coraline. “seems like there’s a lot of old legends on this island.” he had originally come here because he had heard about how there had been quite a bit of paranormal activity. felt like something had drawn him to this island. “who knows, maybe it’s real maybe it’s just all hearsay. won’t know till we dig deeper.” he says, and then nods to her answer. “you know i’m in.” he states, and heads off towards the tree.

summary: danny learns that he actually turns into a ghost and enters the ghost zone. he fooled himself into thinking that he would be okay.
― danny was brushing his teeth one morning, sleepy and really wishing he hadnt woken up so early. and by early he really meant afternoon. he stared at himself in the mirror, a tired man staring back at him. when was the last time he saw himself without bags under his eyes? without a haunting look that pooled in them? he paused with brushing his teeth, leaning more towards the mirror and lightly touching his face. he quickly retracts his hand, though, and staring at with annoyance.
he goes back to brushing his teeth furiously, and looking anywhere but the mirror. he finally finished, spitting the toothpaste into the sink. he starts to feel a little dizzy, though, grabbing onto the sides of the sink. he closes his eyes, trying to calm down and steady himself. his heart feels as if it’s speeding up, beating too fast for this moment. his left hand, where his scar is starts to feel hot and stinging with pain. he takes in a deep breath, holds it, and then lets it go.
danny plummets through the bathroom floor, letting out a surprised yelp. he comes to a halt a few inches off the floor on the ground level. he’s floating, and danny can only stare down at his feet with utter confusion. he had to be dreaming, right? as he brought his eyes back to his surroundings, he had fallen into sam’s bedroom. he catches a glimpse of himself in her vanity and he had to take a second look.
he didn’t even recognize himself, when he floated over to her mirror. he had snow white hair, glowing green eyes and he was wearing that suit he had donned on when he went to explore the machine his parents had built. he raised a gloved hand, and so did the man in the mirror. it reminded him of that day, back when he was fourteen and had woken up on the cold floor and had run to the bathroom mirror.
“what the...” he whispers, tearing his eyes away from the mirror. he then begins to float out of sam’s room and to the kitchen where she’s making herself toast. “sam!” he exclaims, but she continues on with her cooking as if he isn’t there and he realizes that he is there, but isn’t to her. “no, no, no.” he mumbles, grabbing fistful of his white hair.
“i’m alive, i’m alive.” he whispers to himself, trying to keep himself calm. he’s on the verge of having a full blown panic attack. “keep ahold of yourself, danny. stay calm.” he’s murmuring, hands tugging at his now bright white hair.
“sam, have you-“ tucker gets cut off as sam let’s out a startled squeak. her hold on her plate slacking, and it slips from her fingers. danny goes to grab it for her, but it phases straight through his hand and falls to the floor and shatters “sorry! didnt mean to scare you.”
“i didn’t think you guys would be awake.” she states, heading to grab a broom. “or, well, you.” she corrects herself as it was just him alone that had walked into the kitchen. “here,” she hands tucker the dust pan.
danny can only watch as they begin to clean up the broken plate that he had tried to save. he stares at his hand, that familar fear he’d felt so many times before beginning to spread it’s way through him once more. it wrapped around his heart, causing his mind to race and his hands to start shaking.
“i was gonna ask if you’ve seen danny. i found his tooth brush on the floor.” tucker says, and sam furrows her eyebrows at this. “i’m guessing you haven’t seen him with that face you’re giving me.”
danny doesn’t want to continue to listen, doesn’t want to be here anymore. he turns around and ends up floating and phasing through the wall that goes to the living room. he lets his feet finally hit the ground, but they slip through the floor. he panicked, his body zooming from the floor and up towards the ceiling but stopping just short of the ceiling fan. he lets himself hover there, staring at the floor and wondering back to the lab accident.
how had he been so foolish have to messed with something like that? that was when all the problems began, he was an idiot to think that, that small incident when he was fourteen wouldn’t come back to haunt him. it had only happened for one day, turning into someone he didn’t recognize and when he had woken up the next day he was back to plain danny. never worried about it again, as it never seemed to happen but now ― now he was possibly more fucked than ever before.
he tries to float back down to the floor again, this time not letting himself phase through the floor but hovering over it barely a centimeter. danny begins to pretend to walk as if he was actually on the floor, and honestly, it really wasn’t that hard.
he breathes out a cold breath ―
“danny phantom.” this jolts him, and instead of floating him right through his own house ― he just freezes. freezes from fear and a coldness starts running through his veins as he turns around to the voice who had called him by that name he had only heard a few times before. a name he didn’t recognize, one that couldn’t possible belong to him.
what he saw made him fall to his knees, it was as if had always known this would happen again someday. that this exact moment would become real and he had tried to push it all into the back of his head and convinced himself that nothing like this would ever come to be. this was the moment he questioned his sanity, not even the ghosts could make him question as much as this specific moment.
“i don’t understand,” his voice is small, he feels like a child again.
the old lady who had first ever whispered that cursed name to him, she stood right in front of his very eyes once more. she looked exactly as he remembered, but more scared. she wrung her hands together, over and over.
“am i dead?” he asks, and this seems to crack her. she falls in front of him, her arms wrapping around his body and somehow she’s hugging him. he tenses up, the instinct to push her away but he doesn’t. she’s holding him and she’s cold and he’s cold too ― he doesn’t know what’s happening.
“he’s here child, be ready.” she whispers into his ear and then he’s falling into darkness, away from her arms and the cold that seemed familiar. danny doesn’t even let a scream pass through his lips as he falls through what feels like nothing, yet almost like water.
his back slams into the ground though, causing the air to be knocked out of his lungs. he gasps for oxygen, staring up into a sky that seemed off. it had a green tint to it, and the moon was out when it had clearly been the afternoon. he sucks in deep breaths as he sits up, trying to get his surroundings and find his thoughts through all the haze of confusion that’s muddling up his brain.
getting to his feet, his eyes land on a mansion that lays ahead. it’s a huge, luxurious mansion and yet a bad creeping feeling begins up danny’s back. he shivers, and instead of heading towards the mansion he turns around and walks towards what seems to be the end of the property. he stands on a cliff, and stares down into what seems like a void of nothingness. he blinks, and somehow he knows what’s to come and yet he still tries to deny it.
a cold breath comes out of his mouth, as if it had been winter. except it wasn’t, there was no snow anywhere to be found and didn’t feel as if it was cold weather.
“danny phantom,” that name again, and he turns around to another surprise. he stares at a young girl, a mirror image of him, though. white hair in a pony tail, green eyes and a suit that looks just like his. she stares at him with regret in her eyes, yet her stance is confident and threatening.
“dani...?”
“i’m sorry.” she apologizes, taking a step towards him. he can’t back up though, he’s afraid he’ll fall into the oblivion that awaits. “you have to come with me.” dani informs him, her head nodding towards the mansion. “he’s waiting.”
danny gives a slow nod back, trying to calm his breathing once more. dani leads him up the gravel path towards the mansion and he can only follow her. his mind racing and just knowing ― fearing what lays ahead. the future, the threat and the instability that it will bring. danny’s not sure he’s ready, hasn’t had enough time and yet maybe it has been too long. the fear grips tight to his heart, and he can’t help the shake in his legs and hands as he approaches the big front doors of the mansion.
she pushes open one of the doors, only slightly and she disappears. “come,” her voice rings out and danny somehow, pushes ever onward. he slides through the opening, and the door slams shut behind him. he’s stuck in here now. there’s no running away, but danny couldn’t have ran away to begin with. don’t think he’d have ever been able to run away from this moment.
the lighting in the giant home is off, tinted green and creepy. there’s a grand staircase before him, and vintage furniture strewed about. it seems old and ― and haunted.
“i’ve seen this place before,” he murmurs, really to himself. “seen it in my dreams.”
dani gives him this contorted face, and he wants to ask her what’s going on but she just says, “wait here.”
so, he waits. there isn’t much for him to do besides wait, anyway. he has nowhere to go, and he has no idea where he is. danny can only stand in place as he watches dani climb the stairs and disappear. he stands still, hands turning into fists as he tries to stop them from shaking. he’s fourteen again, all over ― but it’s worse. way worse.
danny’s eyes roam the room some more. it doesn’t seem to be too personal, felt to formal for his taste. there different doors around the first level, closed and maybe even locked. it was dead silent.
another cold breath comes out of his mouth, just as when dani had appeared before. it slowly disappears in the air and his eyes turn back towards the staircase. footsteps begin to echo throughout the huge room, and danny can make out someone coming down the stairs.
as their figure becomes more visible, danny can only let out a shaky breath. he backs up into the front doors, eyes stuck on the man who was now coming to the bottom of the stair case. danny wanted to phase through the doors, run back to the void and even thought about throwing himself down there.
“no, no, no.”
“welcome, danny phantom.” vlad greets, a cruel smile forming on his face. “come on in, you don’t need to wait by the door.” he informs danny, beckoning for him to come closer. danny doesn’t move, shock and fear lacing his veins and what the fuck.
“no, no, no.” he repeats again and again, grabbing his head and closing his eyes. this had to be one of his nightmares, this couldn’t be real. vlad plasimus was gone, disappeared and danny had somehow convinced himself that he would never see the evil man again. that the last time he had seen him, it was the final time. “you disappeared, you’re gone.”
“gone?” vlad let out a laugh, it echoed off the walls and throughout danny’s skull. “you think you scared me away? are you that dim?” his smile then fell of his face as he began to approach danny, now, face to face. “you thought you had seen the last of me?” he growled, grabbing a fistful of danny’s hair and making the boy look at him. “that was only the beginning.”
danny shoved the older man away, causing him to stumble and his hand ripped away from his hair. he got a good look at vlad now, and he was different than before. yet, all too familiar.
“what happens now?” danny asks, gritting his teeth together. how he had hated this man, this being, this monster. “where are we?”
vlad straightens himself, brushing off his shoulder. “this is the ghost zone.” he answers. “well, one realm of the ghost zone. my property.” vlad’s cruel smile comes back to his face. “it shall be the place where you stay for all eternity.”
the old man moves towards danny, faster than anything he’s ever dealt with. he barely manages to dodge out of the way and then that damn old woman is catching him before he can fall.
“go danny phantom,” she insists, putting him behind her as she stands to face vlad. "you must go home.”
then danny is falling into that same void again, darkness all around him and it feels like water as he falls and falls. it doesn’t last forever, though, and eventually he lands onto the floor of his living room. where he had originally been.
the familiar voices of sam and tucker fill his ears as he lays on the hard wood floor and stars at the ceiling. he’s a little out of it, doesn’t understand what it is that they are really saying and soon enough their faces are in front of his.
“danny?!” they’re saying and he only stares at them as he can’t really form words. can’t make sense of all that is happening. they sit him up, pestering him with questions and asking if he is alright but he doesn’t know.
“i don’t know,” he finally puts his head in his hands, his damn tears slipping down his face. “i’m alive, i’m alive, i’m alive.” he begins to repeat over and over as tucker and sam try to comfort him and get any information out of him but their questions are never answered. “this is a dream. i’m alive. i’m alive. i’m alive.” he sobs out, rocking back and forth. “i’m alive, i’m alive, i’m alive.”
