Tumblr Gents

I would like to start by saying I have nothing against these blogs and even quiet enjoy them. This is not a criticism but rather I am spelling out my thoughts and writing the reasons these people appear to be ‘our ideal man’.

As I was scrolling through my feed just a moment ago I was wondering to myself what the the fascination with some of the males who own tumblr blogs. As I scrolled through one of these Tumblr gents, @a-gentleman-thoughts, I figured out part of the reasons that these men have these large numbers of adoring fans. Simply put it is because you don’t truly know them.

What do I mean by this? You can see that they are, frequently, kind and genuinely good people. Much of the time you know their sense of style, how they claim to treat their girlfriends and other massively important traits. However, you don’t know the parts of these people that they don’t portray to you. When I read these blogs I don’t know if they like the movies i like, if they enjoy the hobbies I do, or other important characteristics.  

I will use my emotions before I realized how insane I was being. I was reading through one of these blogs and the person posted pictures of men dressed in suits and ties, now being a prep myself, I like that it is idea that the man I would date would have great taste. I would want a man to treat me right and based of the persons blog I was reading he would. I wanted someone who knew what he wanted from life and was on his way to success... I couldn’t tell based of the blog if that was true of this man or not but I imagined it was. I hate cats and love dogs therefore it would be ideal that the man would be a dog lover... couldn’t tell based of the blog... I would want someone who enjoyed watching an opera or seeing a musical. A man who would happily sit on the coach next me as I tapped my feet along with Fred Astaire or Gene Kelley or sang (badly) along with Julie Andrews. I again, have no idea if this man would sit there with me. Therefore, why did I picture this man as being my ideal man? I did this quiet simply because the blog gave me enough as to be able to become interested but left off enough that I was able to project my ideal onto this man.

Quiet simply what I am saying is that these men have all of the flaws and shortcomings that any human being has. They are very much akin to Disney princes in that all there is that makes them perfect is that they are a blank slate for us to paint upon.

Now before I sign out I would like to say, again, that this is not saying anything negative about the people who own and run these blogs. I am not even saying that one shouldn’t visit these blogs, I know I will continue to love them. All I am saying is women should not be allowing themselves to believe that these are the ideal men they have always dreamed of. Since, they simply are not. They are only men.
