The Fifth Week
Well, here we are, in the fifth and (almost) final week of the internship with Code Fever.
Remember that project that I have mentioned for the past couple post? Well the Educator Advisory Board is officially here! What is the Educator Advisory Board, well let me explain. The Purpose of the Educator Advisory Board is to create a space where Educators and Code Fever can collaborate on bringing creative change into the classroom. With this board we will provide resources for educators to turn their ideas into businesses. We want to provide a space where teachers can learn how to build their brand and market themselves as more than Teachers, but entrepreneurs. We held our first meeting and created an event to support our purpose.
The opportunity to work with BlackTech Week and Code Fever has been phenomenal. I am still learning so much about marketing, business development, entrepreneurship, and coding (duh). I look forward to continuing this partnership as this capstone project has no ending. Our first event will be on October 7, as a part of BlackTech Week! We will provide a day filled with speakers and workshops to empower teachers in and out of the classroom. I. AM. SO. EXCITED. Even though the internship will be officially over soon, I would like to continue this relationship with Code Fever and BlackTech Week; they have helped me grow so much in 6 weeks.
Until next time...

The Fourth Week
Remember last week, when I said I was semi shinning, well this I actually shinned!
This week i was given so much responsibility, I felt like I was more than an intern, but an employee. With the staff away, but programs still running, I was put in charge of making sure things went according to schedule and that the interns were on task. And this is why I truly enjoy interning for this start-up- because it is more than that, it is like a community or family. The culture is so open, honest, friendly, and welcoming that I am still in awe 4 weeks in.
In this position I have learned the basics of programming, HTML, CSS, and business marketing. These hard skills will benefit me in the future. Each week, at a summer camp or hackathon I am able to refine my skills by teaching kids how to do those things.
And my baby (the project I referred to last week), is starting to grow and expand. I applied for this internship because I wanted to do something outside of my comfort zone. I did not know anything about entrepreneurship or coding and programming, but I put myself in a position to learn instead of being ignorant. With the help of another intern I have developed the Educator Advisory Board (EAB). The EAB is designed to create a space where Code Fever can empower teachers to empower their students. Our first meeting is Monday and words cannot express my excitement.
Until then...

The Third Week
This week was my week to (semi) shine.
I usually provide assistance during the camps, but this week I had more responsibility in the delivery of the activities. While I am not in the position to teach a full class, I can say that I am well versed in the programs enough to work efficiently with the groups. (and that’s exactly what I have been doing!)
Thus far we have been going over Algorithms and this week introduced Triggers, Loops, and If Statements. AS a result, I was able to help students create their own video came. This experience was satisfying to say the least; I had the opportunity to teach students (something I am already good at) while reaching out of my comfort zone. Can we say, personal growth. Three weeks ago I could not have done the things that I did this week so I call that a win.
And just in case you were not excited to learn how to program a video game, we also taught HTML, CSS, and business marketing. By now the students know the basic format of HTML and how to format their site, so thing week we dug deeper into the configuration. What I like so much about this program is its ability to create while learning. Let me explain: Instead of the regular I do, We Do, They Do and You Do (educators you know what I am talking about), the class is taught as a We Do and They Do. Students are given the tools as they go along, then they are responsible for creating a project from what they learned from the day.
Hackathon. When I first heard of, I thought we were going to break into data server and get some secret information. I was wrong. The Hackathon proved to be far more complex and intriguing than potentially committing a crime. I spent the day in awe as 16 young boys (sadly no girls) spent the day learning how HTML, CSS, and Build a business. AND, with my knowledge I was able to teach students the basics and challenge them to create a business that would stand out from the crowd.
While working with kids is always fun (I mean I am a teacher and all), I was challenged to work more with adults. I am in the process of creating an advisory board for teachers who want to introduce or increase tech in the classroom. We are still in the early stages of the program, I am excited to have this opportunity.
I know I say this every week, but this week has been the best!

The younger kids made their first algorithm on Scratch!
- Fun fact- I learned about the program the day before, but I put on my teacher pants and performed like I had studied it for months!

The Second Week
Last week was good, but this week was even better.
I am really beginning to like this place. We finished last week with the ending of one of the Coding Camps in Ft. Lauderdale. I had the opportunity to be a judge and hear some amazing teenagers pitch their idea for app. Over the weeks, the participants learned how to build websites, create a budget, develop a marketing plan and a market target. All of the participants were extremely well versed and knowledgable about their app idea, but one teen went the extra mile. In the end, there were four winners who took home cash prizes for their hard work. While everyone did not win cash, we did celebrate with pizza, music and good company.
As we trickled back in from the holiday, we all met at the office this week to complete tasks and logistics for the rest of July. I have been assigned restructure lesson plans for younger crowds, which has become easier as I learn more about the content. Teaching coding and learning it at the same time can present challenges, but I am ready for the challenge.
As a teacher, my next project will be working on an advisory board to bridge the gap between teachers and tech. We are working on having more teachers (and more students) involved in BlackTechWeek’s future events.
My brain is being fed daily with new skills and knowledge; I am learning so much about program development, implementation and marketing. All of these skills will help better me as a Entrepreneur and Teacher. It is not often you find a working environment so warm and welcoming, but for a second week I am still a satisfied employee.

The First Week
This week I started interning at Code Fever Miami working with the Black Tech Week crew. I sat down with Ryan, the program manager, and he gave me a run down of all the many things they do. I had already did my research but it was nothing in comparison to listening to him.
The very first day I was assigned a project to redevelop program lesson plans- this is where having a year a teaching under my belt really kicked in. Prior to arriving I did not know what to expect; a part of me was nervous - I do not know much about coding. But being able to use my skills (I’m pretty good at lesson planning) was extremely comforting.
Finally, the moment I had been waiting on all summer came - Mrs. Felecia-CEO and Founder of Code Fever came into the meeting. She came in and started delegating like the boss that she is. I have to admit, I online stalked her after being notified of my assignment so when we met I Was Ready. She is amazing. Period. I was in awe with her warm spirit, intelligence, creativity, and ability to lead.
My day went from good to great when we scored a swag bag from Miss Jessie’s!
This week we worked at two camps teaching kids how to code, build websites, and create business plans. I think I may have learned more than the kids! Everyone in this position is so happy and excited to teach tech. The kids are so enthusiastic when they have an “ahh” moment and realize they created their own website. They are currently working on expanding programs throughout Miami and I’m so excited to see them grow. While it has only been a few days, I already feel like a member of the team. I look forward to seeing what else this internship has to offer. Until then…
