Drew Flores is a member of the Pistolero Viejo art collective and focuses on the culture of the tattoo as much as the design.  His main areas of expertise are Aztec/Mayan/Chicano themes as well as traditional Japanese.

    "MASS PRODUCE ORIGINAL THOUGHT!" BY JOE MILLER

Joe Miller's Mass Produce Original Thought! combines found, acquired, and artist-made objects with text and image to comment on the place of the individual in our manufactured environment. In this exhibition, typographic voice is given to a wide range of objects.  The result is a conversation of forms that brushes aside distinctions between art, design, and poetry.

Hi folks! There's a lot going on this weekend in the Bay Area.  Ready, set, go!

In addition to the monthly art walk, South FIRST FRIDAYS, downtown San Jose will be having the 6th Annual Subzero Festival!  Focused on emerging and present subcultures thriving in our region, Subzero is a DIY, artistically bent, hi/lo-techno mashup where street meets geek.  All venues and the festival are FREE and open to everyone.

Join SubZERO on Friday, June 7th from 7-11pm in downtown San Jose.

    UNEARTHED, SOLO EXHIBITION BY ROB REGER

Rob Reger’s “unEarthed” exhibition will feature an alternative timeline to Earths existence; one that highlights Creation, reEvolution, Mother Nature, Construction, Destruction, Waste, and Felines.  Expect the world upended at the 111 Minna Unnatural History Museum.

One of our very own ARTSPROJEKT artists, Mitsy Ávila Ovalles, is unveiling a solo exhibition at The Arsenal this weekend.  (Check out her ARTSPROJEKT store here!)

Mitsy says, "Hogar dulce (a)Hogar is a play on the phrase 'Home Sweet Home'. Exchanging the word hogar (home) to ahogar, which means to drown. This is my nesting show. I joke with family and friends that I’ve moved into performance art and this show and it’s reception is a surprise wedding reception/ artshow but then I remembered that was an episode of GIRLS, so forget it. But a large part of this show does deal with domesticity, family, motherhood or my impending dance with servitude and selflessness. I don’t always see it like that, just when it’s really quiet. This show is my imagining of what getting on with life might be like. For better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health."

Many of the galleries that participate in Oakland's highly popular First Friday Art Murmur gallery walk are also open EVERY Saturday afternoon.  Know as the Saturday Stroll, this is a quieter and more focused time to view art and visit with gallery directors.  Many galleries also hold special events on Saturday afternoons, such as artists talks, receptions, film screenings, and trunk shows.  You can check out their site for details of their event listings.

E7S Mural Project with Poesia and Sam Rodriguez

Poesia and Sam Rodriguez, both Bay Area artists, teamed up once again to produce an amazing piece for the E7S Mural Project. Empire Seven Studios is working with artists to create these murals as a way to beautify the neighborhood and bring the community together. Alex Lukas and Richard Colman at Guerrero Gallery

Lukas' installation at Guerrero Gallery includes several new diazotypes, unique photocopies and offset lithographs - all recently or almost antiquated methods of reproductions - alongside drawings, as a means to question traditional depictions of time and narrative, specifically past versus future. This continues Lukas' practice of incorporating printmaking techniques intended for producing multiples into unique works.

Pink Orange Blue by Richard Colman

The Project Room will be featuring a collection of new works by Richard Colman. Through drawings and paintings, Colman uses his own characters to create complex compositions which seem to focus on the tension between nature and civilization.

"Control", a solo show by Nick Flatt

At its core, Nick Flatt's Control is a response to Guy Debord's book Society of the Spectacle, where Debord expounds that authentic experience has been subverted by the mere representation of it, outlining the spectacle as a system fed by the mass media's control of images and the social relationship people have with these images. Flatt opens a dialogue on the pseudo needs and boundless pursuit of gratification this type of system has supported.

"Toy Box", a solo show by Robert Xavier Burden

Toy Box consists of several oil paintings with childhood icons placed into compositions of reverence and majesty. Backdrops that appear like ecclesiastical stained glass or elaborately woven rugs from afar reveal something different at closer view; characters once only at home in comics and cartoons are crossing over into the realms of oil portraits with the help of Burden's imaginative eye and deft detailing.

"Merkel. Improved Formula. 100% Austerity"

Earlier this week here at ARTSPROJEKT, we were able to catch up with one of our very own artist TvBOY. Below is a picture of the latest mural he did of Angela Merkel in Munich, Germany at the Stroke Art Fair. As TvBoy explains, this piece represents the irony of the German political economy strangulating southern Europe and at the same time paying homage to Brillo soap pads pop art series by Andy Warhol.

ART OF ZINES 2013

Art of Zines 2013 featuring hundreds of zines from basements, bedrooms and midnight copy shops from throughout the US and abroad. Come check out these diy, cut-and-paste, copied-on-the-cheap, hand-folded, self-distributed gems that continue to surface because someone, somewhere feels the need to express themselves.

Several zine makers will be on site with their latest issues for sale.

    BIG FISH LITTLE FISH IN A DIRTY SMALL POND

Nak Bou is a graphic and multi-media artist based in Southern California. He is a graduate of UCLA’s Design I Media Arts program and a multidisciplinary artist working with graphics to motion, from web and branding to illustrative drawings. In addition to his work as a graphic designer, he is currently working on art that combines themes of nostalgia, historical events, and modern urban life.

ARYZ: STYLE IS THE LIMIT

ARYZ, Barcelona’s favorite large-scale muralist and legendary street artist has been generating a brand new body of work for this show. BAY AREA WEEKEND UPDATE

Happy Friday, Bay Area folks!  Here are a few shows opening up tonight and tomorrow.

Cukui presents “Where’d You Guys Go?” by John Barrick

Traveling the coast on a skateboard, John Barrick came across a gentleman named Ryan O’soris at an abandoned empty swimming pool. After skating for hours, Ryan invited John to his house on a few acres of strawberry fields. A conversation about what John did for a living turned into a commissioned job to paint several portraits of Ryan’s family and descendants. Free strawberries every time he visited the area was the payment for John’s labor. After they worked out the details of the agreement, John stayed for dinner and talked with the family in the area before traveling home with a photo album of the O���soris’ for reference. Two months later when all of the O’soris family portraits were finished and John went to deliver them. The doors were sealed and shattered glass laid on the porch underneath the boarded windows. The field was full of lush green plants, but there was no fruit on them. As John turned the corner to the back of the house, there was a box full of strawberries with a card that read, “John, sorry dude, had to split. Ryan O’ and Fam.” But John didn’t want to leave the memory there, the O’soris family were too kind to forget. And that is how: “Where’d You Guys Go?” came to be.

Join us for a family-friendly event and see new works by John Barrick with Da Hermit kickin beats in the background. Bags of strawberries are welcome too.

    Fecal Face presents “Going Nowhere” by Mario Ayala and Alex Ziv

  Alex Ziv’s works, composed of pen and ink on paper, explore and help to define Ziv’s definition of “Americana” through the visual iconography and language of motorcycle subculture. Through exploring topics of contemporary and historical Americana through a background knowledge of mainstream and subversive symbology found in subcultures, Ziv’s work attempts to enhance and highlight topics of turbulence.

Mario Ayala’s work is a further exploration of his lived experiences intertwined with the ideals of the West Coast ethos containing its ritualistic chachkies, cultural luxuries, and the anxieties due to taking mind altering substances while faced with the prioritized decision of guns or butta. Ayala creates pictorial hyperboles from friend/ family experiences to explore the trudges of economic class, multi cultural sacrosanct, and the day to day hustle for egalitarianism.

  As a San Francisco gallery pressing to give light to under-exposed San Francisco-based artists, this April, the Guerrero Gallery will bring together three photographers as ambassadors of their medium, as well as of the San Francisco art community. The group show will feature work from prolific photographers, Ted Pushinsky, Travis Jensen, and Andrea Sonnenberg. As a representative of an older generation, Pushinsky’s black and white photographs capture San Francisco’s ethnic and economic diversity through the raw details of daily life, while photographer, Travis Jensen, through younger eyes, captures similar material in a commercial twist, and Andrea Sonnenberg’s glimpse of innocence paves the way for a younger generation of artists. The purpose of this exhibition is to both reveal and revel in the unique blend of cultural diversity and innate individuals, which have always done, and still do, make this city.
