My Personal Statement- Zeta
There were many roles for this assignment as we decided to take on quite a big task. The biggest thing I contributed in was doing the sign analysis that we did after our video had been made, as I was too sick to go help edit. I also contributed ideas at the meetings we had, and on Facebook, as well as being present for almost all of the footage that was collected. I found contributing to editing very hard as I am currently on acc for a work fall I had, and am on some heavy medicine. This means that I am often drowsy and not focused. I also had to attend various last minute doctors appointments and physio appointments which sometimes clashed with filming. The way my medication makes me feel is the reason I did not make it to the presentation. I will present you will a medical certificate as soon as possible. Overall I really enjoyed this assignment and loved the team I got. I wish I could have been more hands on with them but I feel I made up with it by doing the work I could from home. This was the most fun I have ever had doing a project and I hope to work with these girls again.

My Personal Statement - Caitlin Mackenzie-Powell
Throughout the production and completion of Assignment 3 I undertook a diverse range of roles within our team of 4. I was heavily involved in the pre-production conceptual planning, this included working together to choose a song and the theme of self empowerment.
I was in charge of setting up the blog as well as posting majority of the content.
I was a part of half of the filming in the television studio, the makeup shots and the outdoors dancing sequence.
I was also present and involved in the editing of Confident’s music video. My skills and knowledge of Premiere Pro helped to create engaging elements.
Finally, I put together the general codes and conventions section found on the blog. Here I related elements of our music video to similar shots found in famous music videos.
You can see my cameo moment at 3:06 on the vimeo clip.

My Personal Statement- Chennay
I took on many roles during our group assignment. However, specifically I made the visual storyboard and contributed ideas at meetings as well as our Facebook group chat. I was in charge of hair and makeup for each shoot and also contributed towards the costume factors. I helped a lot in filming the close ups, and studio film clips and was present for two out of the three filming times. I also contributed towards the first half of the editing in the final music cut. However, we did try to keep editing together rather than separate. The final analysing I contributed to was towards the symbols and sign analysis in the music video that determined power and strength in our character. I really wanted to have the image of a powerful women to be the most obvious aspect. Overall I believe that I put 110% into this project and thoroughly enjoyed my time with my group. Thank you for the opportunity.

Why the colour choice?
1- The lack of colour in black and white equalises subjects of the music video.
2- Black and white are bold and dominant. This gives the aesthetic of CONFIDENCE
3- It is found in many music videos, as a convention.

Target Audience
We think our target audience would be largely female between the ages of 10-25. This covers the developmental teenage years as well as young adulthood.
Lemi as a iconic figure would draw audiences with her young and confident image. She doesn’t need to use over sexualisation or objectification to deliver a message. We thought that this was an important point to convey particularly because of common self confidence issues in our target audience. We wanted to portray the idea that sexuality does not have to be submissive in females.
Confidence is SEXY.

My Personal Statement- Emily
My involvement with this project began in the planning stages where we decided on a song, concept, and representation that we wanted to portray.
After this I became the performer so chose most of the costumes as well as working on creating a representation through use of gesture in my performance.
During this time I was also creating the choreography for the video, with help from my friend (Tristan Fisher, co-dancer in video). I made sure to focus on gesture here also.
This meant that during shooting I was always in front of the camera, trying to create a clear representation of confidence.
During editing I was heavily involved from the second verse to the end. I also created the write up on ‘gesture’ on the blog.

GESTURE
Beginning with direct address, this is empowering to the user as it shows that they have control over their representation. It is also the most direct way to connect with viewers. Direct address was used consistently throughout the music video.
The hair flip is a usually soft and feminine gesture that for this video has been turned into a free and powerful gesture that conveys confidence in having fun.
Pointing is a sign of power that also directs power. In a way it is an extension of direct address, further involving and implicating viewers. Putting the power to the viewers.
Clicking is definitely the most reoccurring gesture and probably one of the most used images in the music video. This reflects the soundtrack but it is also a gesture of power. Of someone who is ‘in power’ vs out of it, it is also associated with words like “sassy” or “fierce”. Self touching is also used briefly in this music video. Although often used as a submissive sexual act by females in the media, in our portrayal it conveys sexual power and confidence.
The choreography includes Lemi pushing away her male co-dancer. This is a power move that matches the lyrics “you can get off, but it’s all bout me tonight”. Implying confidence in herself and in being alone, she does not rely on another person for her self worth. Finally in the choreography we reversed gender roles by starting conventionally (for ballroom/partner dancing) with the man pulling in and dipping the woman (Lemi). However at the last minute Lemi steps around the back and dips her male co-dancer. Reversing typical gender roles, and empowering the female to fulfil the same role as a male.

Lyric Analysis
Are you ready?
Getting out of bed (Morning, house sequence)
It's time for me to take it
Lemi is getting ready
I'm the boss right now
Looking at herself in the mirror
Not gonna fake it
Not when you go down
Walking sassy out of bathroom
Cause this is my game
And you better come to play
Walking down hallway, door shuts as transition
*scene changes to her on stage*
I used to hold my freak back
Hair flick (Freak back)
Now I'm letting go
I make my own choice Picking outfit (2 options)
Yeah I run this show
So leave the lights on
Sassy walking onto “stage” as lights come on
No, you can't make me behave
*transiton* Camera fast spins to wall that’s shes walked past and comes out into next scene
So you say I'm complicated
Her walking down street
That I must be outta my mind
School girls standing apart from a group
But you've had me underrated
Lemi goes past and shes perks up and gets all girls to join Lemi
Rated, rated
What's wrong with being, what's wrong with being
What's wrong with being confident? x2
*Transition back to outside scene*
It's time to get the chains out
Is your tongue tied up?
Couple having date (girl self-conscious)
Cause this is my ground
And I'm dangerous
Goes past couple and girl is confident
And you can get out
But it's all about me tonight
Couple join Lemi walking
So you say I'm complicated
That I must be outta my mind
But you've had me underrated
Rated, rated
What's wrong with being, what's wrong with being
What's wrong with being confident? x4
So you say I'm complicated
But you've had me underrated
What's wrong with being, what's wrong with being
What's wrong with being confident? x4

Today, we met to discuss our concept.
We want to create a music video that draws on general stereotypes surrounding gender and self empowerment media.
We have chosen to use Demi Lovato’s new song “Confidence”. The reason we chose this song was because of it’s empowering themes and anthem-like sound. The lyrics in the chorus of the song are “What’s wrong with being confident?” Our group felt this would clearly reflect our concept of self empowerment because it challenges the stereotype of being submissive.
All genders should feel free to feel confident without worrying about how others will perceive them.
