growing up in a beach community tourist area that felt so bleak and isolating as a young person the beach boys really spoke to the type of malaise and desire to get out and to feel more to feel any type of connection that felt inescapable to me at that point in my life. at that point i didn't know much about brian wilson's life (that would come years later as i studied him and the beach boys more seriously) but i was so taken with how he was able to create entire worlds from these meticulous sonic layers which absolutely blew me away musically and emotionally. i studied beach boys charts the way brian wilson studied the four freshmen because i wanted to know how he was able to create a sound that felt like you could crawl inside and be buoyed in. i loved the poppy upbeat hits of the beach boys' early days as a kid (especially because some of the first records that my grandmother gave me were her beach boys records that she listened to when she was a teen in the sixties herself) but it really was the stuff on friends, wild honey, surf's up and smile sessions especially (even though brian was less involved with the former), and of course pet sounds that totally shifted my understanding of the sixties music landscape and made me appreciate his genius as a composer-arranger-performer. it feels almost reductive to call his work zeitgeist-defining but there are very few other creatives that rival his influence and legacy. what a life and what a loss in the world of music and beyond—he will be sorely and immensely missed. love and mercy to you and your friends tonight.
