Local Artist Feature: Cusique

Count this as the warm cup of tea the blog offers you, inviting you back and saying, "Don't worry guys, I'm all set to go now! Enjoy!"

His debut self-titled venture has to be one of my favorite albums this year (ranking up to bigger names such as Local Natives). The opening track and first single, Owen, features clever sampling and a great overall groove rock feel. As the LP progresses, the mood oscillates from groovy, sometimes bluesy rock to mellow, very calm and uplifting tracks. The heavier songs, such as Owen, Number 8, and Mary Jean showcase his ventures into jams and bluesy rock. Lighter tracks like Lula and Beacons (which has a catchy feel to it in my opinion) help bounce the tone of the album around, giving the feeling of variety in his work. In this same style, the ninth track on the album, Stranded (Acts I, II, & III), slightly differs as it follows a sort of story, but still retains that mellow feel.

We saw Dave Grohl and the entire SOUND CITY crew turning heads at Sundance Film Festival last week and couldn’t be more excited for this online release. We are currently taking a Friday air guitar break to celebrate…you should probably watch the movie and join us. DO IT FOR ROCK AND ROLL.

Light Up Gold is a hard album to write a review for because it seems, although not widely known (yet), nearly all the things to say about them have already been written, either directly or vicariously. Cut and paste a cliche, a list of bands they sound like and there you have it. But the great thing about this record is you don’t need to read all that - it’s a very accessible first album - just turn it on and enjoy. It has all the ingredients of a defining cult classic (witty lyrics, laid back style, lo-fi production) and mines a rich vein of influences latching onto the sonic angst of youth throughout the ages. Whilst it might yet become that classic, in our cluttered era of music releases it has to fight amongst the crowd. But then again, in another era it might never have made it out (the original cutting was self-released) so we should be thankful for that. Even if they burn out after this, Parquet Courts will have contributed a very good debut album to the canon of indie rock.
