My Grandparents’ Garden Stimboard

Casual reminder that you cannot call yourself anti-ableist and then shame older teenagers and adults for having hyperfixations and special interests, even if they’re associated or intended for a younger audience or seem silly or ‘cringy’. 

Autism and neurodivergence do not suddenly go ‘poof’ when you hit the age of 18. Many many ND folk will continue to have hyperfixations and special interests throughout their lives, you might even keep the same special interests from childhood all through your life. You might find yourself with special interests that last for many years, or they might cycle around and around.

There seems to be a general misconception online that once you’re an adult (somewhere between 18 and 25 depending on opinion), you’re supposed to get a job, get out of fandom/off the internet and pay your taxes? And this is really disturbing? 

In general being an adult is not about abandoning fun and hobbies, a big part of adulthood is learning how to juggle responsibilites and finding time for yourself. Play and hobbies remain incredibly important throughout your life; whether that be through having a pet, outings and activities with friends, gaming, crafts, sports etc. And your passions and hobbies should not just be ‘practical’ or be things that are profitable. You’re supposed to have fun for fun’s sake!

And it becomes ableist, especially in regards to adults who cannot work (whether that be at all or only part time), adults who are unable to move out of their parents’/guardians’ home and ND adults with special interests and hyperfixations. ND teens are being given the message they must somehow repress/stop being neurodivergent once they’re adults and that they cannot be in online spaces for their interests any more, and that’s a very damaging message. 

Because there isn’t an ‘acceptable’ way to be neurodivergent as an adult and implying there should be is ableist. There will be ND people who’s only way to socialize will be online, there are very isolated ND and disabled adults who’s only access to people like them is through the internet. So implying all adults should get offline and go get a job is ableist and damaging for the young people who might find themselves in those situations when they’re older.

The fact is your neurodivergence isn’t going to ever go away, you’ll simply grow and learn new skills and coping mechanisms to help yourself. You’ll find work-arounds and methods for doing things. Sometimes you’ll learn a skill and then have to relearn it a few times, and that’s okay too! Adulthood is a learning process, life is a learning process, and we all work at our own pace.

Ultimately, we need to stop perpetuating the myth that there is one way to be an adult and that ND behviour is only permitted in childhood and your teenage years. Autism and neurodivergence are already infantalized within society and online, we shouldn’t be perpetuating that within our own communities.
