My Progress: Week #13
As my first 6-week block of sessions have come to an end I have began preparing for the start of my second block. With the holidays being a busy time of the year registrations have been slower than the first sessions but I’m hoping for a few more dancer to make the class bigger or more to be able to offer two different classes instead of just one.

My Progress: Week #12
We had our last class of the session this week, which was a themed class. The kids had lots of fun and were all excited for Christmas and to start back to dance in the New Year.
Registrations were slow this week, thinking this is because of the busy holiday.

My Progress: Week #11
Nothing has changed this week. I’ve had a few more registrations for my next sessions that starts in January.
Next week is the last class of this session. We’ll be having a red and green theme class for Christmas, with some treats.

My Progress: Week #10
The registrations for my second 6-week session block haven’t been the greatest yet. I think this has to do with the busy holiday season. Most of the children from my first 6-week sessions have signed up again, along with a few new clients.
Other than the slow registrations my business is going well. I’m still advertising and hoping to gain more clients so I can start offering more classes in the New Year.

My Progress: Week #9
SB Danceis going well. I am half way through my first 6-week session. 3 weeks left to go then I am taking a 2-week break, to follow the school Christmas break.
I have already started advertising for my second 6-week session block. I am hoping to have enough students/clients to open another class when the second block begins in January. Until then I will continue to advertise and try to expand SB Dance.
As much as I love running my own business, I do find it very stressful. I do miss being able to finish work and walk away at the end of the day and not have to worry about anything. But I am liking the freedom and responsibilities that comes with it.

My Progress: Week 8
There hasn’t been much change since week 7 for my business. I have gotten another client for my business but that is all. Still hoping to gain students throughout the last weeks of this course.
I am still advertising and running classes.
I’m also still enjoying working for myself, I like the freedom that it brings.

My Progress: Week 7
What is working?
One thing that is working for me is my advertisements. My client base is still slow but have more than I thought I would have in the beginning.
What isn’t working?
Not that it isn’t working but only offering one style of dance makes it difficult to give customers exactly what they want. But once my business is up and off the ground more I plan on offering more styles.
How do you feel this project is coming?
This project is going fairly well and is stressful. I knew it would be a lot of work to start your own business but I’m learning about and doing things that I didn’t know I had to do before.
What are you learning from running a business?
I’m learning about laws and policies I didn’t know about before but its definitely the career I want.
What are you learning about yourself?
I’ve learned that I really enjoy working for myself. It allows me to do everything exactly as I want to and make decisions without having to ask multiple other people.

Where will I get the money?
There are many different programs and grants today for Canadian Entrepreneurs that can help with start-up costs or give loans. Some include; ‘New Business Grants Canada’, ‘Business Angel Investor’,‘Women Entrepreneurs’and many more. There are grants and funds available for people under 30 and the government has some programs you can apply to for loans/grants.
Before applying to any grant or loan I would make sure my business plan for SB Dance is well laid out to make it easy to understand and show that I have done my due diligences and know where I want my business to go in the future. Would include where/how I’m going to find clients, how I choose the location of my business and an estimate of customers I expect to have and when. I will incorporate my estimated revenue and a detailed plan of how I came to those estimates.
I would apply for a loan/grant after my business was up and running and was heading in the direction I wanted it too.

Business Operations Plan
When starting an “in-person” business that doesn’t necessarily have a “product” to sell or to purchase from a manufacturer, you focus on figuring out what expenses your business will have. With SB Dance some of the expenses would include rent, marketing/advertisement and insurance(s).
SB Dance should be up and running on time. I would just need to create a website and pay for advertisements to be put on social media (i.e. Facebook, Instagram, etc.) to reach a larger target audience. If I am able to reach a large audience with my marketing, then I should be able to generate a client base to start running SB Dance.
When I researched about permits and licenses that SB Dance would need, there came up with a list of 12 permits/licenses. Some included ‘Federal Business Registration’, ‘Sound Licenses’, ‘Master Business Licenses’ and ‘Sole Proprietorship’. I don’t know if all 12 would really be necessary but I will be looking closer at each one to make sure.
Finally, my overall vision for SB Dance is to create a business that will help children learn and love to dance. All I will need to do this is a place to rent and great clients.

Customer Persona
An ideal customer for SB Dance’s would be anyone that wants to learn how to dance. That could be a child, a teen or even an adult, you’re never too old to learn something new.
Anyone that likes to move and to be active, listen to music and have fun would be the perfect customer for SB Dance. If someone has ever watched a music video and wish they could dance like the dancers in the video than SB Dance would be ideal for them. Ever wanted to impress someone with your dance moves but don’t really have any than SB Dance could help.
SB Dance’s ideal customer would be anyone outgoing and always looking to try something new.

Case Study
Questions #4: Critique the sales approach Michael is using. Suggest alternatives.
“I’m Michael, and I noticed the exterior paint on your house is a real mess.”
Michael’s sales approach was very rude. When you’re trying to sell a service to someone you should be kind a respectful and kind. I sure wouldn’t hire someone that I just met that is already insulting me.
I would suggest that Michael use a friendly introduction to people when trying to sell his business. Maybe he could say something like;
“Hi, I’m Michael. I operate a paint business and if you are ever looking to do any paint job I would love to help.”
This sounds friendlier and no way are you offending the home or the owner. You are polite and just making your new business known to potential clients.
Other approaches Michael used with his potential customers were;
“Hey, how are you? Look, you want a really good paint job for cheap?”
“You interested in saving some money on paint work?”
This approaches where Michael used the word “cheap” and phases such as “saving some money” don’t do justice for his business. Using “cheap” and “saving some money” makes it seem like the work he would do would also be cheap and not done well. Michael should try saying something along these lines;
“Hi my name is Michael and I offer affordable paint jobs on homes.”
A phase such as the above one doesn’t make your business sound “cheap” and that the work isn’t going to be good.
You never want to put down your potential customers of your business, be kind to both.

Local Competition
Living in a small town with more than three dance schools/lessons means there’s a lot of local competition. One of the bigger studios in town is Tapps, its been operating for over 15 years and is still doing well. The studio offers Kinder-dance, Jazz, Tap, Acro, Hip Hop, Ballet, Musical Theatre, Lyrical and Contemporary.
There are some negative reviews from former clients about the cleanliness of the studio space and absent teachers but also some reviews about great teachers.
Tapps social media is updated weekly to bi-weekly with studio updates and pictures. It also says they reply to messages typically within a day.
The Dance Space is another local competitor in town. The dance styles they offer are Tap, Lyrical, Jazz, Hip Hop, Acro, Modern and Kinder-dance. The Dance Space is fairly new as they are only in their second year of business.
As it is a newer studio there are not many reviews yet to tell how the studio is doing so far. However, I did see some comments/posts about a lot of classes being cancelled.
Their social media doesn’t seem to be the best, it isn’t updated very often which wouldn’t be helpful for anyone that goes to or is looking to go to the studio. Their Facebook massager says they usually reply within a day to any messages.
Another bigger dance studio is Mariposa Dance Company.Jazz, Tap, Acro, Ballet, Hip Hop, Musical Theatre, Kinder-dance, Lyrical, Contemporary, and Zumba are the dance styles offered at the studio. Mariposahas been open and running for the past 15 years and is still continuing to grow every year.
From the reviews that I read they all were positive, I didn’t come across any negative ones. The reviews I read were about the friendly and supporting instructors and about the good training their dancers received from the studio.
Their social media is updated weekly with studio information from their clients to keep them updated with everything that is happening at the studio.
Mariposa Dance Company also says they are ADAPT certified and offer Jazz and Tap ADAPT exams.
Having 3 or more other studios in the same small town means there will be a huge local competition between each studio. All studios will be looking for ways to make their business better than the other dance studios in town to make theirs the best, which only makes sense.

strengths and weaknesses
Recognizing your own strengths AND your own weaknesses can be one of your greatest strengths. Being able to admit your weaknesses will only help to make them a strength.
Strengths:
· Ambition
· Managing others
· Positivity
Weaknesses:
· Age
· Lack of experience
· Fear of failure
The ambition I have to constantly learn and to grow as a person is my greatest strength, I’m always willing to try and learn new things. I have been a dance instructor for a few years now, this practice has helped me acquire how to not only manage myself but others as well. Ensuring my dancers are learning what is needed for their dance training, keeping their parents and other teachers aware of how they are doing and behaving in class. Positivity is a strength of mine and it has helped me a lot, it helps when managing others and helps when learning new things.
A weakness of mine is my age. I feel I haven’t had a lot of experience in the “real” world and I think that puts me at a disadvantage to someone that is older. I lack the experience in financial planning and sales, I feel this is also because of my age. I’ve done some personal financial planning but never on a larger sale (business related) and I’ve never had to sell anything. Another weakness I have is a fear of failure, even though I am always willing to try new things I’m still scared of failing and being unsuccessful. I look forward to hopefully turning some of my weaknesses into strengths with information I learn from taking this course.
