Some things could have happened, but never do.
By: Susana Linares Betancourt 10°A
The day after I met you
I caught myself
doodling ling hearts on every page.
The moment I learned your last name
I caught myself
putting it behind my first name
tasting it on my tongue.
The day I first spoke to you
I caught myself
imagining how our kids would look like
and what would we name them?
Alice for a girl,
Elliot for a boy
and a fat cat named whiskers
The day after I saw you with her
I caught myself
drawing an arrow through every doodle heart,
carefully picking your last name from my tongue.
It doesn’t taste good anymore.
Years later
I met you
in a park
With my daugher Emma
my baby boy Ben
And my little dog Zero .
Happiness in my eyes
and a husband in my heart.
The day after
you met me again
you pulled the little picture
of the two of us
out of your wallet.
Cut it to pieces,
shredded like the flicker
of hope you still had  left.
Some things could have happened.
But never do.

Ready for our SPRING EDITION?
It must be spring
Tumblr media
All across North America, one of the surest signs that spring is here is the return of migratory birds.
One morning you wake up and the trees around you are suddenly filled with all sorts of dumb singing birds that were not there yesterday. Incredibly, many of these birds have flown thousands of miles to reach your yard, following only celestial and magnetic cues passed down genetically.
Nobody invited them, but there they are anyway.

To all the good things that ended and the better things to begin
By: Maria Camila Bonilla 11A
Some people refer to high school as the hardest time in their life; they tend to remember the banner-covered hallways with a sort of aversion and shrug bashfully as they’re asked about their favorite high school memory. Somehow, I’ve never felt identified with this sentiment and have wondered about my personal experience. As I recount the infinite memories and notice that I associate the school’s building with a home that’s safe and warm, I realize that it’s always going to be highly improbable for me to remember high school with something other than fondness and nostalgia. Saying goodbye in such a grand, definite manner is kind of unprecedented for me; especially since I’m saying goodbye to the place that saw me grow up with the people that know me the best. As time passes, I notice that instead of wanting to grow up, I yearn to grow young; to remember those sunny afternoons when time became slippery, fragile and golden and to forever remain in a state of laughter, good friends and unforgettable moments. However, I realize that time came to an end long ago and I’ll never be able to live it in the same way. That’s why I have writing and the memories of the long period of my life that shaped me and made me believe in the possibility of the grandness of life.
First of all, I have my friends to thank; my beautiful, crazy, unforgettable friends. Their magnificence has changed me, and, quoting Rosa Montero, in each of them I find radioactive women. Sounds funny, but it’s the perfect sentiment to express how uncontainable, unprecedented and revolutionary their impact on the world is, and is going to be. My lunch breaks have been characterized by a full stomach, bright smiles and the most memorable of conversations. I have met a group of people who have challenged and accepted me and who make me think of friendship as the most rare and sublime thing in the world. I’m proud to still be close to a great part of the friends I’ve met throughout my whole life; distance, different classrooms, lack of time and the changes of life have shaped and changed us, but still, the same laughter-stricken conversations remain after an afternoon’s work of catching up. From everyone in Class 2017, I’ve learned incommensurable lessons and values; these girls have taught me patience, resilience, passion, the art of dreaming big and have kept our world sane by always hailing laughter when it is most needed. 13 years of tears, struggle and fights, as well as of unforgettable days, moments larger than life itself and a sentiment of belonging and a huge love, have brought together a group of eclectic personalities, who are each going to revolutionize the world in their own unique way.
To my school, teachers and community, I thank the countless years of hard work and dedication in raising generation after generation of girl bosses. The lessons and brightness the whole Pacha community have brought to my life, I’ll treasure forever and keep close to my heart, where the most special things remain. It’s astounding how much going to school can cheer me up; I’ll start a day with low expectations and the desire to immediately go back to bed and, as soon as I get to an early day of basketball practice, my day morphs and turns into something wonderful. As I start my morning with the game I love, and I get to go to my class, to be welcomed back into that familiar, warm environment, I realize my spirit will always lighten up as soon as I see friendly faces, a place that knows me and the routine I’ve grown to love.
My teachers have become professionals to look up to and, some of them, have been sources of constant support, fun times and seemingly-unending knowledge. The classes have become open spaces for discussion and lively debates, and some of the lessons have transcended the textbooks and PowerPoint presentations and have settled in my heart as little bits of the admirable wisdom I got to experience, first-hand.
Even though I know it’s going to be hard to move on from this crucial part of my life, I’ll always have my memories. And, even if that sounds extremely cliché and whatnot, I’ve learned that the capacity of bringing forth moments, and of feeling as though they were happening again, is one of the greatest we have. My ability to grow up will always be sheltered by my possibility of growing young, carefree and hopeful, through the memories of my times at school. Homework, upcoming, worrying evaluations and constant academic stress dim in comparison to what my school has contributed to my growth as a person. The privilege I’ve been given to access education and to enjoy it too has been invaluable and, as part of what being a Pacha has taught me, I plan to honor this opportunity always and to constantly work to make myself proud. The daily trips to the bakery, rushed entrances to classes, laughter and tears are instances in my life I’ll always treasure. My friends and teacher are people who will always reside within the most special parts of my heart and, though, with time, I’ll surely forget how some faces were arranges and how voices used to say my favorite things, I’ll always have the certainty that my school and the feeling it ignited in me will reside calmly, untainted and glorious, in my memory, my heart and my voice.

Thank you Women.
Thank you, women.
Tumblr media
By: Valentina Rodriguez 10A
Since 1967, Colombia has celebrated Women’s day every March the 8th.For us, girls, it is just a simple day where we sometimes get congratulated and, in my experience, I have gotten a couple of roses and some chocolates. We usually use this day to make some nice reflections about how we should thank women because of all their effort being moms and all the bravery we show in life. Well, if the object of this day is to make all these statements publically on Facebook, we should make everyday women’s days, because indeed we show a lot of bravery, sweat, and tears when referring to all that we have to handle in Colombia’s society.
So let’s start with the list of thing we should say thank you to women in Colombia. Thank you for all your strength throughout all these years, because you have handled one of the highest rates of domestic violence and sexual assaults in the last couple of years.  “El tiempo” reported in its last August edition, that Legal Medicine proclaims to have had 44, 796 cases of domestic violence in the course of 2016. It also stated that almost 25,000 of those cases were exclusively towards women, them being abused physically with punches, humiliated psychologically, and violated in by their partner. Additionally, let's please never forget those horrible events occurred to Yuliana Sambonì, a little seven-year-old girl who was kidnaped, tortured, raped and like if it was not enough, murdered by a 38-year-old man that does not even deserved to be called by his name.
Thank you, women, for being so patient and waiting so long for equality, that is still yet to arrive, in terms of salaries and work opportunities. It is estimated that women in Colombia gain 22.9% less that a man who has the same job and has the same level of education and preparation. And let’s not even mention that fact that because we have that wonderful opportunity and blessing of being a mom, we are determined to 17.6% less than the ones that are not moms. Spectacular!
Thank you, women, for contributing so much Colombia’s economy.  In Colombia, products for feminine hygiene have IVA because they are considered articles of luxury. I’m sorry girls, but this nation does not care about you heavy flow. Also, it is known that in 2014 more that 800 million pesos were invested in makeup by women in our country. That's why they decided to take our crown in miss universe! We were too pretty!
If I want to, I can continue writing an endless list expressing “my gratitude” towards Colombian women, but the point here is not to say all these injustices that happen day by day to us. The real purpose of this article is to make all of you aware that evidently, men are not going to give a solution to all of our problems, just the way they do give us gifts in women’s day. It is our job to assure that our conditions are taken with the respect and seriousness that they deserve. So the next women’s day someone congratulates you for being a girl, take it a reminder of all the things that we are capable of doing, and all the things that need to be done for us to be able to do them.

How to get over this amount of homework?
By Laura Camila Torres, 10A.
Tumblr media
It is a big struggle going to school eight hours and then going home with five long assignments. However we can´t complain about that  because in some sort of point we realize that with the homework hundreds of questions arise that are very useful for upcoming exams and for studying.  But, those five assessments do not ask the question by themselves so you must start doing them before the hour of sleep gets.
First of all, you must change your clothes.  For doing an efficient work you must be comfortable or else you will predetermine your body for been more exhausted. Also because you have been working very hard during eight hours, you have been exercising a lot and some comfortable clothes or pajamas can relax your body.
In second place, you must eat something.  Personally, when I get home the first thing I see is the dining room with a lot of fresh fruits and some exquisite bread on top of the table, so I stop thinking about all the things I need to do and my stomach starts  asking for food, and it is normal since we have a long day and our brain works very hard for getting such amount of information and many energy is needed, so a sandwich or a plate of fruit is the best thing for getting the energy we need for a little bit of hard work.
Lastly, you must prepare something that motivates you to finish all the homework you have. You have to read five chapters, make ten math exercise and do an essay for tomorrow and you have not started yet; however we are still hungry, we are sleepy and it just eight o’clock, for instance I recommend you to have some chocolate or candy you like in your room or somewhere far away but somewhere where you know is it. This will motivate you to continue doing your homework understanding things because you know when you finish up you can have a piece for chocolate and finally go to sleep. Also, the distance where the chocolate is and your tiredness are not a great couple, therefore you will finish your work without going and eat your candy before you finish everything, because I know we are really tired and in some point laziness attack us so that we prefer to finish everything and then stand up, rather than to stand up multiple times.
I know school is hard and the homework adds more to that difficulty, however if we learn how to deal with it, I can say we can survive a little more.
*Note: For these methods to work properly, it is better to not let your homework accumulate.

A realistic Valentine’s Day!
By Valentina Rodriguez, 10A.
Tumblr media
The reason why everybody hates Valentine’s Day is because it reminds us of these entire horrible chick flick clichés that are not real, but deep down we would do anything to be part of one. Every girl has dreamed, in some point in her life, about how amazing it would be to be kissed in the rain, like Noah and Ally from the Notebook, or to meet the love of your life singing karaoke to a very romantic and convenient song for the occasion, like Troy and Gabriella from High School Musical. And let’s not forget of the classic romantic comedy, where Sandra Bullock gets to marry Ryan Freaking Renolds, and she is the bad guy in the story, The Proposal. All these movies have made me laugh and cry about the misery of being lonely, because even though they have very different plots and unrealistic situations, all of them have one thing in common: they teach young girls that love comes in the form of a prince charming, with a nice entertaining encounter, where you absolutely know he is the one. Of course, love is not that easy, and both of you have to go through some very complicated situations that put your feelings in jeopardy, but eventually you find your happy ever after.
Well, let me burst the bubble for you before life makes you hit the cold hard ground called reality. I have been a victim of these false stereotypes, and I noticed the problem too late, and by that time I had already made my expectation of men and relationships, so you can imagine how my illusions just fell apart like Leonardo Dicaprio’s chances of living with Rose in Titanic. So here I am to make a realistic ending for all of these romantic movies, and maybe make the existential crisis a bit more bearable.
Let’s start with the Notebook. The idea for this movie was actually from a very corny book written by Nicholas Sparks , that is ten times cheesier that the movie. I saw it because one of my friends told me it was impossible to not cry at least half of the movie due to the fact that it showed the real struggles of love.  I used to believe that, before I noticed that destiny doesn’t really work in real life the way it does in Hollywood. With this in mind, you can be an optimist and think that all the ice cream, pancakes and summer carnival dates could really happen, but the serious stuff was way more complicated. There are very real chances that Ally would have married the wrong but still very handsome guy, had kids with him and then realize that she misses Noah more than she ever imagined. Noah, by this time, has decided to move on from PTD caused by heart-break and of course the war. And when they finally meet the timing is horrible and they are in the middle of summer so there is no rain to kiss. Finally, after a long affair and various issues, Ally follows her heart and makes the decision to file for diverse and assume the consequences of making mistakes. Because in real love, you sometimes make the wrong choices and break someone’s hearts, to get you the ending that ends up being happy after the wounds heal.
Moreover we have High School Musical, the trauma of my childhood. This movie gave false hopes in respect to my abilities to sing, and even worse told me that love plays basketball and look like Zack Efron. For all of you young ladies, if your love looks like Zack efron be careful because those guys are aware of their looks and are experts on using them. I not saying that you cannot find a nice good-looking boyfriend, I’m just saying that for the matter of you heart, you should not fall as easily as Gabriella. Because if you do, you will end up listening to “when there was me and you” wearing those horrible jeans, in the worst case scenario. In the real case scenario, Troy dates you for a while, but because of adolescence he probably kisses Sharpay and as result of your heart break you end up dating Ryan even though you know he is gay. Obviously, things don’t work out because you are not really his type, and then Troy comes back saying he is sorry. You guys get back together, have a romantic prom, a real relationship, support each other about the future and the when college appears, although you are 32.17 miles away from each other, people grow and change. He later becomes that wonderful guy you tell your teenage daughter when the time comes. In this case, it is all about where life gets you to know whether or not he is the father of those kids. Love is very complex, especially when you are trying to find who you are, and interests and opportunities do get in the way. In this case, your part on the school musical is the least of your problems.
Finally we have the Proposal. Here Sandra Bullock is a very mean boss that has to marry his gorgeous assistant, Ryan Renolds, in order to have the US citizenship and be able to keep her editorial together. As a romantic comedy, this situation works perfectly considering the fact that there is a cute and angry dog that doesn’t like Sandra, and a lot of funny and embarrassing spontaneous encounters. Talking of reality, on the other hand, the movie would have never had a beginning. In life, you don’t get to be the mean guy that lies to innocent people, makes false promises breaking a couple of pure hearts, and in the middle of all that find true love, have a happy ending and then change the way you see life and treat others. In real life, the way you treat others defines what kind of love you receive, adding to that the fact that when you lie, you usually end up alone, not with some stunning prince charming running to get you back. You are the one who is supposed to be fighting and mending what you broke.
These are some of the possibilities of these romantic comedies that I like to watch on my lonely night of Valentine’s Day. I know they sound a bit depressing but they at least sound more real. The message here is to stop believing the ideas that chick flicks sell because they are only ideal but never authentic. It says that love is easy when it is hard, and that it is beautiful when sometimes it is sad. So take your scoop of ice cream and hold on to that when facing that cruel but still worth living reality that is around you.

One of our favorite Disney classics becomes a real-life movie
By Juliana Cardenas, 10B.
Tumblr media
I believe we all know really well all Disney movies, and personally the one I am going to talk about in a moment is definitely one of my favorites and one of the most popular. Because who does not know Beauty and The Beast?
Having lived a life in selfishness, a young prince is cursed by a mysterious enchantress into having the appearance of a monstrous beast. His only hope is to learn to love a young woman and earn her love in return in order to redeem himself. Years later, his chance shows itself when a young maiden named Belle offers to take her ill father's place as his prisoner. With help from the castle's enchanted staff, Belle learns to appreciate her captor and immediately falls in love with him. Back in the village however, an unscrupulous hunter has his own plans for Belle.
This great romance has been one of the best ones in many years, and the fact they are going to do a remake of this story but with humans’ characters is absolutely amazing. Another fact is that the directors of the movie chose the magnificent Emma Watson to interpret Belle, she is  one of the most esteemed actresses in the United States, due to the fact she has  worked in one of the best movies ever, Harry Potter.
Moreover, the sound track is made by two of the most important singers nowadays, Ariana Grande, who is also known because of her appearance in nickelodeon famous show called Victorious and is also made by John Legend who is known because of his famous song “All of me”.
If this Is not enough for you to go and watch this movie as soon as it releases then I don’t know what are you looking for in a movie, go and watch it, and I assure you, you will not regret it.
I will leave the link of the trailer:

Until death do us apart
By Susana Linares, 10A.
Lately in Colombia there’s been circulating the love story of Angela Iranzo (94 yrs old) and Víctor Herrera (106 yrs old), the adorable couple that was married for 72 years until in February 17th Victor died and then 6 hours later Angela died too.
Angela arrived to Colombia in her teen years, she was escaping from the Spanish-Catholicism. She exited through the Netherlands, next passing through Cuba and finally arriving to “Puerto Colombia” in the Atlantic department.
She stayed in the lovely and festive city of Barranquilla where she would meet the love of her live Víctor. He used to write her love poems which was one of the reasons she fell in love with him. They were a happy couple and married in the 17th of May of 1944.
Angela was the one that first started having health issues, which is why she was hospitalized. The absence of Angela was noticed by her also sick husband who kept asking where she was. After Angela was released from the hospital Victor started having complications leading him to also being hospitalized, leaving his wife in a bed at their home. Later Angela had a relapse and needed to be taken once again to the hospital. There she met with Victor and spend some time next to him.
Finally at 5:30 pm of February 17th Victor passed away, when one of her grandkids informed Angela that her husband had died, she squeezed her hand because she could no longer speak and shed a tear. 6 hours later Angela passed away too meeting once again with her beloved husband.
The couple had 8 children, 34 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and one great-greatgrandchild, they are I believe the major prove that true love lasts an eternity. I must admit I’m not a hopeless romantic but when I heard their story my heart melted completely.

Are we all chained to the rhythm?
By Susana Linares, 10A.
Tumblr media
I’ve never been really a fan of Katy Perry or her music, yet I have to admit I’m completely fascinated by her new song “Chained to the Rhythm” and it’s not because of the groovy tunes it has, or the amazing music video it has, it is because of the fantastic lyrics and their deep message.
Chained to the rythmn talks about how we’ve been deceived throughout the years by media, society and even the government into believing that everything is so perfect and that how our life can be so wonderful if we live under the standards that society itself imposes. I believed Katy wanted to state this poweful message about how twisty and distorted our currently society is and how we live captured in the idea that earth is this utopia when it actually is pretty dytopian in my opinion.
The song also talks about how we live in this technological and self centered society that we’ve come to the point that we have numbed our human side and turned into zombies that take “cute selfies”. One of my favorite quotes of the song is “So comfortable, we live in a bubble, a bubble, so comfortable we can’t see the trouble, trouble” I believe Katy wanted to express how indifferent this society has become, that we no longer have any bit of compassion for the other because we feel it’s better just to ignore the ugly truth and keep living in a pool of lies.
Finally the songs tries to encourage us to fight society, fight the empire, because if we raise up against it, we will surely win. We just need to open our eyes and realice that we are not living in an happy place, we are living in hell because we have left our will behind and been chained to the rythmn.
I believe everyone should take a look at the song, since it’s completely brilliant and it depicts completely what we have turned into.

How “Pepe the Frog” became a hate symbol
By Paula Barriga, 10B.
Tumblr media
Internet meme Pepe the Frog has gone through various embodiments over the past years, most of them being pretty inoffensive and amusing. In September 2016, portrayals of the smirking green frog as Adolf Hitler, a klansman, and many other racist personages earned him a spot in the Anti-Defamation League’s database of hate symbols. It wasn’t always that way for Pepe, though, who was first introduced to the internet in 2005 by Matt Furie in his “Boy’s Club” cartoons.
The frog’s popularity started to increase back in 2008, when a comic of him with his pants at his ankles while urinating, captioned “feels good, man”, spread through the online community of 4chan. Since then, Pepe’s image was shaped over time to capture the range of human experience, including Sad Frog, who is often identified thanks to the catchphrases “Not good, man”, and “Feels bad, man”.
As the meme multiplied over on 4chan, 8chan, and Reddit, a subset of Pepe memes came into being centered around racist, anti-semitic, xenophobic, and other bigoted themes.  The 2016 United States election aggravated the situation as white power movements came out to endorse Republican nominee, Donald Trump. After Hillary Clinton said most of Trump’s supporters were in a  “basket of deplorables”, Donald Trump Jr. shared an edited version of the movie poster of “The Expendables” on Instagram, where it showed Pepe among Trump and other conservative figures labeled “The Deplorables”. The Clinton campaign fired back with a post: “Donald Trump, Pepe the Frog, and white supremacist: an explainer” on why “that cartoon frog is more sinister than you might realize”. The internet responded with mock and ridicule.
Context matters, of course. Not all Pepes are sinister.
“The mere fact of posting a Pepe meme does not mean that someone is racist or a white supremacist”, the ADL stated. “However, if the meme itself is racist or anti-semitic in nature, or if it appears in a context containing bigoted or offensive language or symbols, then it may have been used for hateful purposes”.
Even after all this ruckus, most of the internet population does not consider the last statement as fact and has, ironically, included the racist implications of the frog as one more part of what makes the meme memorable.

The best way to die.
By Sofia Valentina Castro, 10B.
Have you ever wondered how are you going to die? I guess fighting for your country is a good way. Contemplate the good life I live while i look you in the eyes. I am seeing my good so alive, while my sight turns away.
Even though I am young and I  had higher expectations for my life, I won’t regret my death because I did try to protect and save the country where my pretty wife lies,  I pray for her not to suffer my death, I don’t want her to cry.
I have no forces to move myself, not even to say a word. it’s time for me to accept my farewell, and full of honor and glory, leave this beautiful world.
I do not feel pain anymore, I will cure the ones I love They will overcome They must go one.
