Text
Steve stumbling into this friendship with Billy when he comes back and it gets to where Billy just feels better if he’s near Max or Steve- just their proximity calms him when he panics or thinks he hears the shadow. But sometimes Max is at school and he feels so pathetic bothering Steve all the time so he keeps pretending he’s renting a video just to be near Steve while he’s browsing, but at this point it’s just because it makes him calmer. It helps that Steve will find him and come help him breathe and just like exist like it’s no big deal.
It’s later that it becomes something else, once Billy’s doing a whole lot better, is actually doing better than he ever has.
One day Billy goes to Family Video and Steve finds him, all worried. “Hey. Are you doing okay?”
And Billy’s got this certain twinkle in his eye Steve’s never seen before. That heartbreaker smile is back but there’s something more real about it now as Billy looks at him, leaning on a shelf of videos, looking better than he has in so long, and looking genuinely happier than has since Steve has met him.
“I’m doing just fine, pretty boy,” Billy says. “How are you doin’?”
Steve is absolutely useless for the rest of the day.
