5 Tips To Colour Resistant Grey Hair at Home
Tumblr media
Grey roots can be unwanted and difficult to cover. If you are looking to colour resistant grey hair, follow some simple tips to make sure your greys are covered and that your new colour is consistent, with total grey coverage.
Grey hair isn’t actually grey – it’s white and the pigment loss which occurs naturally in hair as we age. Grey hair is often also coarser and can be resistant to colour absorption. It can be more difficult to colour resistant grey hair and to cover visible regrowth.
You may need a few tips to achieve the colour you want and to successfully colour resistant grey hair at home.
Here’s our top 5 tips for colouring grey regrowth:
1. Less colour, more frequent colouring: Visible new hair growth can be seen in as little to 7 to 10 days, so you may need to colour your hair more frequently to keep them at bay. If you are colouring frequently it is particularly important to look for low chemical products to reduce your exposure to the chemicals in the hair colour formula. Some ingredients which are commonly found in hair colour formulas can be absorbed through the skin. Professor Mokbel, a London based breast cancer researcher and surgeon has identified PPD as an ingredient which you should reduce or avoid in hair colour products.
The best choices for permanent hair colour formulas are ammonia and PPD free.
Select a colour product blended with botanical oils and extracts. Botanicals can soothe the scalp, nourish the hair and support and repair hair during the colouring process.
2. Precision colour application: You will need to be extra careful about your colour placement in order to apply the fresh colour just on your grey regrowth to target the colour to your resistant grey hair. Be careful to avoid overlapping the new colour on already coloured hair. Overlapping the colour can result in darker and duller colour towards the ends and colour-build-up. Handy hint – we provide a tint brush in your Free Trial for a reason!
3. Section your hair and use a tint brush like a pro for colouring your grey regrowth: Follow our super simple guide to sectioning to achieve neat, manageable part lines before you colour. Clip your hair up with the sectioning clips provided in our Free Trial. This will let you clearly see the line between your new growth and old colour and help guide your colour placement.
The tint brush (provided in your Free Trial) is a simple, cheap and easy to use colouring tool which lets you apply the colour placement and amount with control and precision. Using a tint brush has real benefits, especially for those who are re-colouring regularly to cover greys. Clip it with the clips provided in our Free Trial, and begin painting the colour to your regrowth section by section. Try not to overlap the colour. Use the brush to push the colour in to the roots to help colour absorption, and then reapply a little extra colour on the roots especially around your forehead and centre part line.
4. Extra time for extra colour: Leave your colour on your resistant greys for the full processing time plus extra ten minutes. If you want to freshen the colour at the mid-section and ends, run the colour through the full length of your hair for the last ten minutes of processing time. Save your left-over colour in the bowl for the full standard processing time, and then paint the colour through your hair lengths at the beginning of the additional ten minutes of processing time.
5. Get a process in place: You CAN master home colouring and colour resistant grey hair at home, and achieve gorgeous, natural looking colour results at home. Here’s how – Step up your home colouring with a few simple, reuseable accessories (shipped in our Free Trial) which give your more control over your colour and help to make the process neater and more manageable. A colour proof cape will keep your clothes colour free, a tint brush and bowl will give you that neat, precise colour application you need to avoid overlapping colour and sectioning clips will keep it manageable.
At The Shade we provide all these accessories as well as a colour proof bench mat and storage bag in our Free Trial. Our colour is available as a super convenient subscription box, so it will be automatically delivered when you need it.
Product, process and salon tools will enable you to refine and elevate your home colouring. Feel the confidence of fresh, fabulous colour when you need it. Banish the greys in your own time and home, and enjoy true salon colour and condition results, conveniently with The Shade.

5 Reasons Why Every Colourist Uses a Tint Brush and You Should Too
Ever walked into a salon for a colour appointment and sat back and relaxed while your colourists zig zagged a squeezy bottle through your hair? So, no.
Colourists always use a tint brush and bowl and are very careful with their colour placement. Their results (and job!) depends on them placing the right colour in the right place. There’s very good reasons why we take our home colouring cues from salon colouring professionals.
Here are the top five:
1. Precise colour placement.
Layers are for cuts, not colour. Start using a tint brush for your home colouring to introduce control to the hair colouring process. The tint brush helps you place the colour exactly where you need it, without overlapping colour. Colour which has been overlapped will be darker and less vibrant at the ends . The tint brush lets you paint the colour exactly where you need it, significantly increasing fabulous colouring outcomes, and reducing the likelihood that you will have a home colouring disaster or even minor mishap.
2. Creating clean easy partings.
Follow our simple sectioning guide. for easier, neater sectioning. Use the handle of your brush to create neat partings to section your hair. Use non-metallic sectioning clips (provided in your Free Trial) to clip your hair out of the way. This will keep it neat and manageable while you colour and it helps you to access and see the roots of your hair so that you can place the colour exactly where you need it. The aim is to avoid overlapping colour which will make your hair colour darker and duller in the mid-lengths after repeated colouring.
3. Colour saturation.
Using a tint brush helps you control not only where the colour goes but also how much colour you paint on to your hair. This is especially useful if you are trying to cover some unloved greys .
4. Great for greys.
Grey hair has no colour pigments and can be coarser and naturally be resistant to absorbing colour. Use your tint brush to paint the colour into the grey roots and continue colouring all sections of your hair (roots or full-length depending on your colouring needs) and then return to place more colour on grey roots. Push the colour into the hair with the brush to help the colour absorption. The tint brush helps you double-up on the colour where you need it most, while avoiding overlapping and colour build-up on the mid-sections of your hair.
5. It’s all about the result.
The upshot is that fabulous colour results can really only be achieved on an ongoing basis using a tint brush – that is exactly why colourists in salons use them. It is very difficult to avoid colour layering and the stripy colour banding effect that is seen after colour has been layered  if you apply full length colour or over-lap colour. Using a tint brush for your home colouring is easy, and fabulous colour results can be achieved and repeated at home by using the right product and application method.
At The Shade we are bridging the gap between the salon and home colouring. We bring you salon product, colour guidance and application to help you emulate and achieve true, ongoing salon results at home. It’s easier than you might think to colour at home using salon accessories such as a tint brush. A tint brush can take your hosssssme colouring to another gorgeous level.

Colour Your Hair at Home: 5 Tips from the Professionals
We all know someone who wouldn’t dare colour their own hair at home —or maybe you’re one of those people yourself—certain that you’ll mess it up. Well fear no more, because straight from professional colourists, we have the 5 tips you need to know if you think you can’t colour your hair at home. Hint: YOU CAN.
1. HAVE REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS WHEN CHOOSING YOUR COLOR
The first step is finding the right shade for your hair. If you’re hesitant to do this on your own, use resources that have professional advice and guidance. Professional colourists will help you understand what can be achieved and how to successfully switch to at home colouring. Check out our online Color Consultation, which considers your hair goals and natural colourings and recommends a colour which will flatter your hair and complexion. The right shade for you will make you look fresh and compliment your natural colour undertones, while the wrong colour selection could make you look washed out and tired, as the colours will be working against you.
2. WATCH TUTORIALS
Application videos will break down the home colouring process into simple steps, and you can watch them as you’re going through the application process. Read all the instructions before you start to colour your hair at home. It’s always a good idea to do a sensitivity test, as some sensitivities develop over time, so even if you have not had a reaction to hair colour before you may develop a sensitivity over time, particularly if you use a product with PPD (The Shade’s colour’s are all PPD free). Consider what you are looking to achieve – new colour from end to end, or a root touch-up. Sometimes there may have a couple different options when applying, and it’s best to know what route to take before you dive in.
3. ONLY TOUCH UP YOUR ROOTS
If your hair is already coloured, pulling colour through your ends each time can result in colour build-up, or colour banding, which is an unwanted horizontal striping effect with the hair appearing darker towards the ends, which can be seen when the hair has been coloured multiple times at the ends, and only once at the roots. It’s better to pull through the colour the last 10 minutes of processing when switching to a new colour line for the first time, or every 3-4 times you colour to refresh the tone. You only really want to pull through for the full processing time when you’re switching to a darker shade overall.
4. BOWL + BRUSH
Most professionals use a mixing bowl and brush to apply hair color, and there’s a reason for that—they help with saturation, accuracy of placement, and creating clean easy partings. So step up your home colouring and use a bowl and brush, if you’re nervous about application. Even better, watch this video on how to use a bowl and brush when you colour your hair at home for easier application and better colour results.
5. CLIP YOUR HAIR INTO SECTIONS
Maybe a head full of hair seems daunting. Try clipping it into sections, and work one section at a time. Sectioning makes for easier (and quicker) application. Not sure what we mean by sectioning? No worries— there’s a post for that, too.
