Yesterday I found myself on yet another trip down memory lane when I visited some of the places I used to love going to during the short time I lived in NYC 15 yrs ago. This is an image I had the privilege of seeing a few times a week for almost a year. A spectacular view of Manhattan Bridge with the Empire State Building modestly peeking through the lower arch. I worked at an office in the building on the right, and my office window was the one on the top left corner. From there you could also see Brooklyn Bridge and the magnificent skyline across the river. The day I was on my way to my interview the taxi driver explained to me that the area I was going to was called DUMBO, which stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. I giggled at how silly it sounded. Little did I know what to expect. My job was part time and quite random, although I did get to record voice overs on a Nagra reel-to-reel, spoke to Jena Malone through her agent in LA, and remember meeting some aspiring local actors, one man whose headshot proved he thought of himself as a bit of a Robert De Niro. I wonder if he ever made it. #Brooklyn #dumbo #manhattanbridge #newyork (at DUMBO, Brooklyn) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2G3b9Yn_ZOe1s7FfKIvnDuXTTmNX0EvXI_Ff80/?igshid=1m4t5hx3a86ue

US Adventure Day 1: Having just returned to the Big Apple after 12 years, the adrenaline kept me going through a 20hr journey on about three hours of sleep over 48hrs. So much so that when I realised the one and only Roger Federer would be playing in the US Open quarterfinals that same evening, it was a no-brainer, it had to happen. However, past experiences have taught me nothing. The last time I tried to see a celebrity perform live after a long trip to another country, I fell asleep (cue Rachel yelling at Ross over an 18-page letter...front and back!). Jude Law playing Hamlet in London is quite something, but three hours of that under those circumstances becomes slightly torturous. Nevertheless, despite that and the fact that he lost (but we’ll forget about that bit), I can still happily say that I have finally made this one happen. I saw (for the most part) Federer playing live at the US Open, and that’s a pretty bloody awesome thing 😎🎾 (at Arthur Ashe Stadium) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2BKmdhHsFFxz5Nyp_O0HMeDJsUl0QRJH1Yvbo0/?igshid=kz2od24stily

This hole in the wall serves THE best Italian sandwiches in Florence. There is a second one of the same name directly across the street, and on any given day and time (during opening hours of course), you will find a queue of people outside each one, literally going down to the end of the street. It is important to remember that this is not a place for those with little or no patience (but a good place to start working on that - some things really are worth waiting for). It is also important to make sure you’re just the right amount of hungry; hungry enough to devour what you’re about to be served (it’s huge), but not so hungry that waiting in an endless line will feel so torturous you’ll want to knock everyone down like a line of dominoes and jump over them screaming for your sandwich whilst flailing your arms about, with the risk of getting permanently barred. However, once you’re inside, you will be greeted by a line of five charming young Italian men (but not always the same ones...yes, I went more than once). You could even say they are... ‘sandwiched’ together *ba dum tss*... behind a very narrow counter, and will swiftly serve you your sandwich of choice while gracefully shouting to each other in their melodic Italian to be passed the ingredients they need. Watching them make your sandwich is half the experience of this place. These guys have a very impressive system of perfectly organised chaos. There is a seamlessly perfect method to the madness that is Italian sandwich making. I recommend trying the Summer Sandwich. This simple sandwich consists of just the right Italian ingredients. A very generous few layers of pepper prosciutto, thick juicy slices of fresh mozzarella, perfectly ripened tomatoes (and those of you who know me know how fussy I am with my tomatoes), and a tiny touch of basil, all stuffed between two enormous, olive oil-soaked layers of freshly baked, deliciously comforting focaccia the size of your head (I’m not kidding). And it’s literally ready in seconds. It takes a while to get through it (mine took me my entire two train journeys from Florence to Rome), and so good that you will feel very protective over it, and certainly won’t be sharing it with anyone. Not even your dog. In fact, the experience is quite like a combination of those two Friends episodes, ‘the one with Ross’ sandwich’ and ‘the one where Joey doesn’t share food’. Who ever thought you could write five paragraphs about a sandwich?! My primary school teachers would be proud. Now go get in that queue, it’s only going to get longer!
