One of the things I think about when it comes to Spike and Buffy is that they definitely would have met and would have become enemies regardless of Angel’s existence in the BTVS timeline. Like. The only reason Angel and Buffy met was because PTB sent him to her. It was brought on by external factors. Meanwhile Spike would have gone to the Hellmouth to try and restore Dru’s health, but even if that wasn’t the case, there was still a big possibility of him hearing about a really strong Slayer in Sunnydale and seeking her out for a fight to the death. Him seeking her out is internal, something that would have made sense based on his characterization.

But Angel going to a random town after spending decades being a waste of space is not something that would happen without divine intervention.

So this is all to say that even if the pairing came about by accident, from a narrative POV their dynamic still made the most sense to write and develop. From a storytelling perspective they were the more organic pairing whereas Buffy and Angel feels more manufactured regardless of how it actually came about (planned from first ep). Spike and Buffy actually feel EARNED.

It’s because the show doesn’t give us more substance or background on Angel that would justify his presence except that forces more powerful than them wanted to put him there.
