A week in multi-verse haiku (2/25/25 - 3/4/25)
Tuesday
Between my grandma's
Peppermint birthday milkshake
And the sprawling golf
Course, where I plot a
New path (brave explorer) the
World is newborn, green.
Wednesday
The sun does strange things:
Strangers outside the doctor's
Office almost smiled
At each other. I
Heard the voice of my friend from
The opposite pole.
Thursday
Singapore noodles
And Edgar Allen Poe with
My love, a FaceTime
Call with his niece, who
Pronounced my name perfectly
As the screen rendered.
Friday
Packing, mushroom soup.
What I really recall is
How, in the small hours
Of Saturday, you
Comforted me while I nursed
My smarting left eye.
Saturday (pre-flight)
Delirium of
Early morning. Half asleep,
But with confidence,
You built on my dream,
Added miniatures to
My winding tale of
Carlos laying a
Feast on a hotel table,
Discussing Dexter.
Saturday (post-flight)
Never renting from
Budget again after that
Disney World line. Still,
Grandma and I made
the most of the evening, with
burgers, church, a quest
for ducks in the mild
breeze at sunset, and Scrabble
prior to bedtime.
Sunday
The kitschy coffee
Shop was fine, the chat about
The Deer Whisperer
And nesting eagles.
I put my feet in the sea
And saw the lizard
With the orange head.
We had a scare. We lunched at
The Cracker Barrel,
Our heads together
To hear each other over
The din of church folks.
Monday
After Nana's and
Freedom park, we searched in vain
for an elusive
book. I discovered
a new parking spot and caught
the sunset's tail end.
Tuesday
Mortality marked
My birthday. Surrounded by
My young photos, I
Feared the reaper in
The water. Never have I
Had such a thirst for
Longevity. Full
Of pizza, I regarded
The dinosaurs in
The lake while the wind
Whipped my hair around my head
Like flailing serpents.

A Hogfather Reading Journal
My mother and I created art responses to each section of the book, sometimes AI-generated:

Teatime playing with the dogs after a stealthy entry.
Death among the monstrous deep sea worms and fishies.

Susan and the hourglasses.

A limerick about Ridcully and the forbidden bathroom.

A multi-verse haiku about Corporal Nobbs's visit to Death as the Hogfather.

A multi-verse haiku about the oh God of hangovers's affliction.
Death redistributes food to the beggars.

The fancy restaurant prepares dishes made of boots and mud after finding their typical fare stolen.

The Hogfather assuming his modern jolly form and Death with the rocking horse.

More pictures from my Sunday bike ride
Before I made it to the 7-Eleven, I encountered a black cat guardian in front of an apartment complex. I got off the path to photograph him.

Then, to my surprise, a separate black cat approached from my left and immediately started rubbing against my bicycle and legs. I gave him some pats, but then he hissed at the first cat and trotted back off in the direction he came from. The first cat remained seated, staring him down.

The second cat (the one who approached me) entered a drain in the side of the hill. I knelt down to try to photograph him and he came out for more pats.

Of somewhat lesser importance photography-wise: some ruins from the Leesburg Lime Company and a picture of Goose Creek (I think?) that would have been far prettier without the electric lines.

I had a nice phone conversation with my mom on the way to 7-Eleven. She, Kooky, and Wesley just got back from visiting my grandpa's family in South Carolina and she was about to go see the new Beetlejuice with Scott and Kooky. I also paused by Eric's memorial bench once more to respond to my most recent messages on my Spanish app. I ended up recounting the story of Theseus and the minotaur in what was probably very broken Spanish, as I was talking with someone on there about mythology.
Lastly, I took over three pokemon gyms along the path there. All of the pokemon had been in there for several days, so I have a good chance of getting 50 plus coins from them (more if they are not all taken back at once). I also have a separate gym near Lake Anne that, despite the heavy traffic in the area, has remained in my posession for four days now. It was chilly when I made it back to my car.
