Anyone else notice Rose Quartz’s obsession with being or becoming anything other than Rose Quartz? Garnet and fusion. The rebellion for a dynamic earth. Her perspective on growing up in this latest ep?
I think Rose couldn’t stand being who she’d had to be - either with Homeworld or the “perfect idol”. I can’t imagine she feels like a success after the corruption...
Sheezus. I think we are looking at someone deeply, deeply in a dark place, smiling anyway.

Sometimes a bigot needs punched. When you’re thoroughly and constantly dehumanized, sometimes there are no more polite options. Expecting people being abused to respond with perfect sainthood is a cruel, if common burden.
i just don’t understand why is physical assault seen as *~*character development*~* and a sign that the character is a *~*strong role model*~* especially when it comes to chilren’s media
why the fuck are you teaching little kids that being physically abusive is the right thing to do?

Does that mean that Mayor Dewey coming to appreciate the bench for BEING A BENCH rather than a political event implies that Buck finally reached him?
Hence...the tears...AUGH.
I know the title sounds silly because Shirt Club seems to be nothing more than a funny filler episode but after rewatching it a few times I’ve figured out a few things: why Buck was acting so cold, what actually made Mayor Dewey emotional, and why Steven’s art of his father was being exploited.

My bet: Amethyst also posed for the shark. She’s sharked before.
Garnet wasn’t joking. (Again! “We kept Amethyst.”)

Can Gems Age?
The answer seemed to be no
.or so I thought. That was until the episode “Story for Steven”, in which we saw younger depictions of the gems. This could just be a continuity error but I started to think about it and the more I thought the more I wanted to talk about it.
Tumblr media
Lets start with how gems are born. Most if not all gems are born in kindergartens where they gestate underground and emerge at seemingly adult size. From there we have no idea what happens to them, though by Amethyst’s earliest memories it could be said that “newborn” gems seem to have no focus, as it seems she just hung around the kindergarten playing like a young child would. In essence they could be like adults physically but children mentally/emotionally. These new gems might then be educated or go through some sort of process that matures them.
Tumblr media
In the episode “So Many Birthdays” Steven’s age fluctuated dangerously, almost to the point of him dying. During that time Pearl stated “Gems can’t die from aging, but he is half human.” She didn’t state “Gems can’t age”, only that they can’t die from it. This leads me to believe that while Gems don’t physically age due to their bodies being artificial, they can mentally age and mature.
Tumblr media
In the episode Steven’s age was seemingly fluctuating based on his emotional state, but what if he wasn’t truly physically aging at all? It could be he was shape-shifting. After all we have seen a case of pure-bred gems involuntarily shape-shifting their base form based on how they feel before.
Tumblr media
In the episode “Monster Buddies” when Steven released Centipeetle she resumed a monster form. However because she felt small and scared, she became small and scared. If emotion had no hold over the “true forms” of gems, Centipeetle would have turned back into a behemoth regardless of how she felt.
The same could be said of the Crystal Gems. Not only did they look younger in “Story for Steven”, they acted younger as well. Especially Amethyst, who likely was mothered by Rose and is the “child” of the team, so her form and mannerisms reflect that. Amethyst acted like a child despite being hundreds if not thousands of years old. The same could also be said of Pearl and Garnet, who acted more like young adults than they do now.
Tumblr media
Now what could have happened that caused them to age in the span of 20-ish years? Steven happened. When Rose died bringing Steven into the world a lot changed. They were no longer influenced by her presence, so when the gems grew up their physical forms changed as well to match. Garnet obviously matured in order to take over as leader once Rose was gone. Pearl also matured in order to be a mother for Steven and to a lesser extent Amethyst. Now Amethyst is the real interesting one here. In one fell swoop she lost her mother figure and her sister like relationship to the other gems, so she was forced to mature as well but since the cause was upsetting she only matured to a teenager-like state of mind like that we see today.
Now I know what you are thinking, “What about the painting? They look older in the painting than they did in Story for Steven.”
Tumblr media
That is just it: it is a painting, not a photograph. The painter was likely told about the incident and painted what he imagined, possibly taking artistic liberties. Despite Garnet’s joke about “The hard part was getting the shark to pose” they didn’t stand there for hours in a boat with a shark in mid-air.
This has been a fan theory on gems and aging. This is just MY head-canon, so don’t let it disrupt any head-cannons or fan work you may have.
