The recent introduction of Goods and Services Tax (GST) is set to bring a major revolution in the real estate sector in India. The country is now a step closer to becoming a unified tax market. It will wipe out the erratic taxation structure, which generally stumps industry’s path of growth. However, there are still some points of concern related to GST tax slabs that need clarification.
GST, one of the longest anticipated tax reforms, received undisputed approval from both the houses of Indian parliament this monsoon session. The council of GST that affixed the slabs for various goods and services, included the sector partially through works contract. However, the supply chain mechanism is awaiting a meticulous refurbishment after the implementation of GST.

Unlike current tax laws, GST will enhance the margin in the hands of a property contractor or a developer, thereby eliminating other taxes like VAT, service tax, excise duty, entry tax, octroi, and so on. The sector benefits from facilities in Special Economic Zones (SEZs), which are most likely to be carried forward in GST as well.
