Writing Notes: Generations
The Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset's conception of generations in the history of society and in the life cycle. He identifies 5 generations:
Childhood: age 0-15
Youth: 15-30
Initiation: 30-45
Dominance: 45-60
Old age: 60+
Note: There is no standard definition of generations in the individual life cycle. However, it's important to identify the sequence of generations.
Generational levels are features of individual and collective experience. They are marked by culturally defined age grades, by the phasing of familial, occupational and other careers, and by the historical rise and fall of successive generations.
The meaning of the generations is shaped by biology, history, culture and social institutions. A man works out his own individual meanings as he struggles to make sense of his experience in the changing generations.
Relationships between generational levels are important in all societies. While acknowledging the differences between generations, we can also learn to increase the interaction between them. At every age, all of us carry within ourselves aspects of every generation. Coming to know and use these aspects is a relevant task in every era.

Thinking of Oscar Wilde as a queer icon is all fine and good.
But a good enjoyable writer??!
Everything I have read so far has been insufferable. Especially „the decay of lying.“ This man is a smug bastard and obnoxious to no end.
Vivian is his author-self-insert. Change my mind.
Yes his writing and flow of thoughts is coherent and even my ADHD riddled brain can follow it somehow. But! Trying to find his point in the self important waxings about philosophy and art is comparative to finding a sober straight person at Cologne Pride.
I am not reading this voluntarily. Mind you.

Thoughts on 'Lady Alroy' and 'The Model Millionaire' by Oscar Wilde
This is my second installment of my thoughts as I read my collection of Oscar Wildes short stories. Again, this is more of a rant and it really only makes sense if you have also read the stories lol.
Lady Alroy
This one is very short (as is Model Millionaire) and its much better understood with the commentary my book provides for it due to it just being a product of a time and place but is still really enjoyable. The first person perspective did surpass me a bit as the (2) works I have previously read of Oscar Wilde were in the third person and that is how I typically enjoy my stories, but I understand its necessity as such a short story won't give you as much information on the narrator if it was in the third person. I wonder what Wilde's obsession with such self-centered men who just... lie all the freaking time. With the many nods to the aristocracy in all his stories he seems to have frustrations, maybe the stories are based on his exes lmao. Arthur (different from Lord Arthur in the previous story) did make me a little sad, poor guy :(.
The Model Millionaire
This one I really liked, the historical background of the story being based off of an actual millionaire who dressed as a beggar. The story has many nods to issues Oscar Wilde has published his opinions on which is really interesting as a look into Oscars mind and opinions. His faux happy endings fall apart when you read his opinions on what his story surrounds. Hughie giving who he thought was a beggar some money initially seems like an act of kindness that he gets reparations from by receiving money from the beggar who was actually a millionaire. Though Oscar Wilde has condemned acts like these, saying that "it is immoral to use private property in order to alleviate the horrible evils that result from the institution of private property".

Thoughts on Lord Arthur Savile's Crime by Oscar Wilde (spoilers)
For Christmas I got a book that's a collection of Oscar Wilde's short stories and now that school is wrapping up I am finally able to get around to reading it. Thought I'd blog my thoughts as I finished stories.
For background the only work by Oscar Wilde I've previously read is The Picture of Dorian Gray, which I loved! Also this is more of a rant than a review so if you haven't read the story you may be confused.
Now for my actual thoughts, if you liked TPDG then you will definitely like this story. My book claims the short story was actually published a year before the novella version of the now novel and the main character does ring some bells that remind me of Dorian though they are still independent of each other. Something about the way Oscar Wilde starts both stories with dialogue between characters that are not the main character just tickles my brain in the right way and allows for an intro that connects the scene and character well. I just love how delusion Arthur is because he makes me laugh, like he so casually made a list of friends and family he wouldn't mind killing. "But guys it's obviously for the good of Sybil and therefore actually quite selfless" I say, surrounded by padded white walls. Can you imagine how confused Sybil's family was when this guy kept pushing back the wedding? I'm pretty sure at one point Sybil's sister just tells her to find a new husband. I grew a liking to most characters awarded some sort of significant presence, I primarily liked the German guy who loved dynamite, though I do not condone trying to blow up your uncle by taking advantage of his clock hyper-fixation. I love how the ending really made me question the authenticity of Mr. Podgers as even Lady Windermere admits he thought he was a fraud, and Arthur would have never been a murderer without his aid. I'd like to think Lady Windermere simply fed him gossip. Or perhaps he's like some modern physics where he believes himself to be legit despite silly things like, I don't know, science. Did he foresee his own death? and if so then wouldn't he know that telling Arthur that he's destined to murder would get him murdered? I guess my finally thought it, RIP the silly little palm man.
One last addition: Reading the story made me realize just how in-depth even the short stories can connect to their time and its something I definitely want to do with my own writing even if I don't have the advantage of living in the stories set time period like Oscar Wilde did. I also just love his descriptions for peoples looks.
