an avalanche of feels: rayllum’s argument, an analysis

I just want to talk about Rayla and Callum’s argument (or one of them) in 1x06 for a sec, because the consequences of it, on an emotional level were especially striking on both my first and second watches. Why? Bear with me, for a moment.

In 1x06, it comes to the issue of trust between Rayla and Callum, and while at first I was a little hard on Callum (the juxtaposition between his “we can’t trust her” convo with Ezran, and Rayla’s “We’re in this together, they’re my friends now” to Corvis was a big part of why, I think) I also came around to his side. Because it wasn’t irrational, and Callum opens up to her about emotional matters pretty quickly (1x04). 

He also routinely, if you pay attention to where he sleeps, tends to place himself close to and/or in front of the Egg, so that if anyone went to grab him they’d have to step over him.  It also means he knows Rayla intuitively enough to know when she’s lying, and he’s certainly shown to be more curious in her than Ezran is (which you can take in a various ways, ie. as a symptom of his suspicion, as just an aspect of Callum’s personality and/or their bond, etc.) on a variety of occasions. He’s the only one to ask and to think about her binding (even when she doesn’t, in 1x07) after all.

im rewatching ep 5, “an empty throne,” so as always here are my rayllum thoughts

i love that callum decides rayla must be made of magic like his storm stone, and thereby the cube will glow, and even once it glows he’s so enamoured with it he keeps doing so until rayla stops him. 

“this won’t end well,” she’s so physically strong i love her

first instance of rayla’s hand being injured, and bby girl runs so fast when she hears callum’s cries for help

rayla is so done when she sees what’s going on but she still immediately walks closer to the boy surrounded by arcs of lightning who obviously can’t control it to try and help him, i’m

“okay, lecture well deserved, but what do i do now” god bless callum for always realizing she’s right, basically

rayla agreeing with callum’s crush’s ‘assessment’ of his character as a fool just… let me have this

i like that she caught the primal stone anyway

dO THEY EVER GO MORE THAN FIVE MINUTES WITHOUT ONE OF THEM SMILING AT EACH OTHER?!

also callum just… always wanting to know more/new things in this ep about her, i cry

callum describing her as a total badass, god bless

“aww that’s cute,” it really is ezran. it really is

callum trying to make her laugh i - my heart isn’t stRONG ENOUGH

“are you doing alright?” he is so… soft i can’t handle this

he JUST WANTS TO GET TO KNOW HER AND DISTRACT HER

and she gets so happy talking about her home and he gets so happy listening to her and you just know they’d be so happy living there someday together holy shit 

and all their soft looks and smiles and him moving to sit closer to her and then lean over so he can smile at her better as she smiles up at him i can’t DO THIS

also how much his expression and how soft his voice gets after she says her parents are gone. he rubs the back of his neck which we see him do when he talks about his own insecurities to her in the previous episode so, there’s a lot of emotional weight there

i can confirm that episode five + the boat scene has some of the Softest Rayllum Smiles/Looks possible so do yourself a favour and rewatch this episode especially if you haven’t already

yeah the boat scene is probs my fave rayllum scene i am not recovered bc i too, went over a waterfall, this one just of feels

callum, survives going down a waterfall, and immediately checks on rayla: “you faced your fear.”

i would die for bait’s doggy paddle

callum then saving rayla from the fish, and her trusting him i’m. a cherry on top to an already perfect episode for them and there’s still seven minutes left

callum smiling: “that was brave rayla”

CALLING HER HEROIC

they did not have to show rayla’s reflection in the water like that but they did and i am so grateful.

Dude, I just realized: Callum’s VA played Sokka. Sokka’s first girlfriend turned into the moon. Rayla is a moonshadow elf.
