“We’ll work it out together as a team.” She started as he flopped back in the bed. The shift in weight causing summer to turn slightly. “I for one want to be one of the people willing to work with you. But you’re semblance acts in your favor when your in a fight I’ve noticed, well mostly with the Grimm, we’ve all been lucky with that I think.” Even in the dimly lit room she smiled softly at him.
Finding his hand in the dark Summer placed her hand over his squeezing gently. “And anyone who is afraid of you because of your semblance just hasn’t give you a chance yet. You really are an amazing person stilts, if you did leave, who would take your place? We can’t very well be team STRQ without our Qrow.”
thewhitepetalburst:
Orbs of silver watched and followed as the others frame traversed the small expanse between the door and the bed. His reply did bring a light color to her cheeks but only for a short moment when she took notice of the slumped head dropped way he sat.
Yes she knew about his semblance and what it could do, had an idea of it’s capability’s should it go completely haywire. Summer had just been about to speak when the light flickered out and popped. Looking back to where the glow faded from the burned out bulb a frown crossed her lips in the cover of darkness.
Glancing back in his direction Summer could slowly start to make out his figure in the dark as her eyes adjusted to the lack of light other than that of the shattered mood. “Hey don’t blame yourself, that light had also done that flickering earlier on.” Probably a failed attempt at trying to convince him that not every little thing that happened had to be blamed on his semblance.
Getting up from the chair Summer crossed the room and gently sat down on the bed next to him. “Like I told you before when we found each other in the forest, I don’t believe every little thing that goes wrong is entirely your semblance. I meant it then and I still mean it now Qrow.”
Okay, he knew that the lamp could very possibly have just burned out and it had nothing to do with him, but that wasn’t the point. It just… it had the worst timing. He also knew that Summer was trying and he honestly loved her for that but even that didn’t entirely lift the weight that hung heavy from his shoulders.
Finally, muted red eyes looked through tussled bangs up at her. It was dark but he could still see as she moved and sat beside him. “That’s not the point Smalls,” he sighed. “I know you believe that, but there’s only so many times I’m gonna get called in to Professor Ozpin’s office because I beat the shit out of someone who doesn’t get it. I mean, they don’t know it’s my semblance but after a year and a half of bein’ here, well, people are puttin’ two and two together. Bad shit just HAPPENS around me and…”
Falling backwards to the bed, his eyes went to the ceiling, faint light and shadow playing over the surface from the campus lights outside. “I’m gonna end up putting the team at risk eventually, either by my semblance itself or the shit way other people are reacting to it. How many people are gonna wanna work with the walking embodiment of piss shit luck?”

The words he had spoken hurt that was true enough but Summer wasn’t about to let that stop her from waiting for him. Somehow she had a feeling he’d come back after separating himself for a while. Although she hadn’t expected him to come back quite so late.
The only light in the room was a small desk light pointed away from the other two members of their team sleeping away in their beds. Book in hand Summer had been reading for most of the night and she’d nearly finished it when the door creaked some as Qrow slowly opened the door. Looking over she set the book down sitting a bit more upright.
“I had a feeling you might come back, call it your leaders intuition.” Summer offered with one of her soft kind smiles. “Don’t worry so much about that, I know sometimes I’m not the best leader, but I promise I’ll try harder if you’ll stay.”
Well if that didn’t make him feel more like shit about all of this…
“It had nothin’ to do with you, you’re a good leader Sum,” he sighed, moving in the dimness of the room and going to sit on the edge of his bed. “I’m just a walkin’ curse and you and Raven both knew it. It friggin’ follows me everywhere. I was just dumb to think I could stop the shadows from gettin’ me here too…”
As he sat there, head dropping a bit, and hands raking through black locks in frustration, the little desk lamp started to flicker for a moment before it went out with a loud pop. It startled him out of his hunched position for a moment before he started to curse under his breath knowing full well it was his fault.
“Damn it…” he cursed not caring right now if he woke up the others. Knowing Raven she wouldn’t think twice hearing him and Tai… Tai slept the sleep of the dead so it wasn’t likely…

These bastards at this damn school could be even more relentless than the Tribe. He hadn’t even told anyone outside of his team about his semblance and yet… yet it had still managed to catch up with him. Granted, it was just little things here and there, but it had been enough to earn him the ‘bad luck charm’ moniker here too. He was so done. The ends did NOT justify the abuse… though crawling back to Anima and to that camp without following through… that wasn’t much better.
Thankfully, after blowing up at Raven about it… and Summer trying to talk him down… he’d gone to cool his head and he’d realized what would happen if he went back there now. That and… Summer wasn’t there. That was something that seemed even worse than the added abuse he’d take from the Tribe.
So he dragged himself back to their dorm at 2 in the morning… to a Summer sitting there, awake and waiting for him.

“How did you know I’d come back?” he sighed. “I… I was pretty nasty about the whole thing earlier. And… pretty set on leaving this friggin’ place…”

qrowtheunlucky:
“But I was your partner Summer.” He sounded so weak in that moment, still refusing to turn around and look at her. “I know I wasn’t the best one sure, and I know I’m the one that backed away when ya got pregnant… but I didn’t leave entirely. I swore I’d protect you, be there… and then I failed at that…”
His hands at his sides pressed into firm fists, his entire body tensing against his emotions. “I knew what you were tryin’ to do, that’s why I told ya to let me go with you. I was supposed to have your back but I didn’t. I still let it happen even though I tried to follow you… I tried to FIND you out there. I couldn’t even do that. I couldn’t get you back from that hell… I thought you were dead when I should have tried HARDER.
The bullshit that is me… it kept me from finding you. They don’t call me the Harbinger for nothin’ Summer. I didn’t name my weapon that for nothing either. I bring MISFORTUNE, always have. Guilt by association… that’s why you shouldn’t want any of this, especially with me. We went through this back when ya got pregnant. It was the whole reason I stepped away. Fat lot of good it ended up doing. Sure Ruby came out okay… but it still ended up with us losin’ you for all this time.”
So this had been Summer’s doing all along, but she had done it to protect those she loved. That was what she had told herself anyway, but now as she stood there facing his back Summer tightly closed her eyes. It was easy to tell just how much she had made him hurt, just by the way he spoke. The tone in his voice said it all, more so than the words that he spoke.
Trembling, she was trembling. Not out of fear but out of her own guilt, something she’d sworn she’d stuffed down deep to keep them all safe, never once telling Salem anything and many times it had almost cost her very life. Soon tears began to fall, unstoppable as they spilled from silver colored eyes. Having had done everything in her own power to keep Qrow from ever seeing her like this and now here she was failing so completely.
What could she do? He wasn’t entirely wrong but his semblance and nicknames were not the reason she’d even left him that night so long ago. There really wasn’t anything she could say and the only words that seemed to come to mind for Summer had been the same ones she had sung day in and day out in her cell with Salem’s grasp.
“I...I’m sorry...so sorry...” Hands lifted to her face, palms desperately rubbing at her eyes to try to stop the flow of tears that streaked over her skin. “I thought I was doing the right thing. How...I caused all of this....” Summer had dropped to her knees by this point, legs feeling like they gave out unable to hold the guilt she was now overwhelmed by.

Clover loved both Tai and Qrow, Summer could tell that much and the Atlisian didn’t even have to say a word. But at the same time she could see now it was tearing Qrow apart again. And thus making it harder for Summer to not want to help out in whatever way she could. If there was something she could do maybe getting him to open up would be better than letting him sit up at the ledge alone and disheartened.
“I’ve seen the way Clover looks at you, there’s no doubt in my mind he sees something in you.” Summer started again softly. Slowly and carefully she moved closer to lean her head against his shoulder. “I think he admires Tai, wants to learn new ways to help you. Maybe that’s the reason they spend a lot of time together.” Turning her head slightly to look at those graying black feather like locks she continued. “Try talking to him, ask him, I get the feeling he’ll listen to you, and Tai too.”
thewhitepetalburst:
Okay so maybe asking outright wasn’t her best idea. And well now she was starting to wish she hadn’t said anything. Some leader she was, it felt like Beacon all over again when she felt like an unfit leader. Glancing down to the ground Summer leaned over tucking her skirt back behind her knees before sitting down beside him.
“It reminds you of back then doesn’t it?” Summer questioned looking up towards the sky. “For Ruby’s sake right?” Taking silver hues off the sky she looked at him leaning forward slightly. “Why not talk to them? It doesn’t have to be like this Qrow, you know that right?”
A tender expression crossed the features of her face as she watched him while speaking calmly and softly. But looking back towards the horizon Summer let out a small breath. “You know something, the four of us back here, reminds me of when we all came here after graduating. Of course Rae isn’t here, but that’s okay. Isn’t it?”
There it was… it DID remind him of back then, but not in the way she was implying. Or maybe she was. Summer could be flightier than him in bird form sometimes, but she also was shaper than the edge of Harbinger’s blade. It was the best and the worst thing about her. Either way, it was becoming increasingly clear she wasn’t just going to let this lie.
“Yes it does have to be like this…” he sighed, recoiling a bit more. “We all knew it would end up this way… one way or another. There’s no point in sugar coating it. I should’ve known it was only a matter of time once he came here. I tried to tell him coming back for me was a mistake…”
His head fell into the small gap between his knees. The last thing he wanted her to see right now was the bitter sting that welled in his eyes. “You don’t know what happened back in Atlas Summer, what I allowed to happen, what I did, to him. Just like back then, coming back here was just the beginning of the end. I need to do the same thing for him that I did for you… neither one of you deserved what I did, deserved me failin’ you. It’s better this way.”

Damn it. Even now that she was back and he wasn’t just talking to the stone out on this cliff, she still managed to get into his head. This wasn’t fair. Why was it so easy? He didn’t want to talk about it though… Talking about it gave it life, brought it out into the open and made it damn near impossible to lock back up and swallow down.
He wanted to just wallow in it… deserved it. After what he’d done to Clover, after the way he’d given in to the darkness back then… this was what he deserved. Just like he’d deserved it back then. He had been the one to walk away, to distance himself, to protect her and Ruby… He had left her with Tai knowing full well that there were hints of things between them too.
Good things in his life… they just fell apart…
And he deserved it.
“Look, I said don’t worry about it,” he huffed, pulling his legs up from where they were dangling over the edge and into his chest. He looked so… small… in that moment. “I knew things would end up this way… they always do… that’s it.”
Okay so maybe asking outright wasn’t her best idea. And well now she was starting to wish she hadn’t said anything. qrowtheunlucky:
Grabbing her by the arm, maybe a bit rougher than he should, he didn’t give her a choice in following him. They needed a bit more cover, something the trees could provide.
Summer was out of her mind, though there was always a part of him that had thought that simply because she had taken an interest in him at all. This though, this was just plain stupid in his eyes. He knew that Raven kept eyes on him, knew that she wasn’t the only one. It had been everything he had to impart upon the kids that they needed to maintain a low profile, the Salem had eyes and ears everywhere much the same as Ozpin had. He had hoped that Summer would have already known better. He wasn’t worth the risk.
“You’re out of your mind,” his gaspy voice hissed, despite wanting to wrap her up and hold her close at the same time. “You and I both know I’m not, first of all… Second of all…”
The anger that had built in his features started to melt a bit. The grip he’d had tightened but the urgency of it slipped from one of anger to something more like holding on for dear life. Like if he let go every fear he had would come swooping in and she’d be gone… again.
“Second of all…” he continued, his other hand coming up to wrap around her other arm and his head dropping. “It’s not worth… I’M not worth the risk of her finding you.”
Silver orbs gone wide at the suddenness of his action, grabbing onto her arm and practically dragging her away. “Qrow...?” It was all that she was able to get out being tugged along, his long stride forcing her much smaller one to double up make her move faster. Okay risking herself like this was a bit rash she did admit but did he have to drag her away like that?
Watching him Summer glanced from him to her arm where he held her. Was he trembling? Anger maybe or something completely different? Looking back Summer softened her expression. Letting her gaze fall to the ground she let her hair shroud her face. “I...Sorry I wasn’t thinking.”

qrowtheunlucky:
Do I look okay?
The words throbbed in his head but he bit them back before they could get past his lips. Him and the realm of ‘Okay’ were two very mutually exclusive things right now. And with what was going through his head… she was the last person he wanted to talk to.
It was happening all over again, or so it felt in his chest. Why had Qrow thought that Clover being at Patch would be a good thing? Tai just… he had this air about him… it drew people in. Tai was a better person than he was and he knew it. The fact that Clover had gravitated to Tai, had started spending more time with him… Qrow wasn’t stupid. He saw the look in Clover’s eyes when he looked at Tai… he used to see it when he looked at him.
Tai was better for him anyway… just like he’d been better for Summer too. Honestly, Qrow’s mind was convinced anyone was better but that was beside the point.
“Don’t worry about it Smalls,” he grumbled under his breath. “It’s not worth it…”
I’m not worth it.
A frown crossed her lips at his response. It was clear to her that something was bothering him. “Of course it’s worth it.” Summer half pouted watching him. She had watched since she had come back to patch herself. Although much later than Clover had first arrived.
Summer had watched the interactions between the other three for a long while before she even bothered to make herself known to them. Saw the way that Clover treated Qrow, how they all interacted. It had made her smile but lately once she had shown herself, Summer could tell that Qrow seemed to be distancing himself.
To be honest she had always hated seeing him upset. Even when she had taken to Tai years ago, But wasn’t that because they had decided it would be best for their child? Mentally shaking the memories from her mind Summer looked out into the distance off the cliff. “I’ve seen you like this once before, Qrow, You’re worried about Clover? Maybe Tai?”

“What troubles you?” Summer tilted her head some, hair slipping to one side under her hood as she leaned over. Silver eyes looked over him, he didn’t look physically hurt at least so that was good wasn’t it? Placing a hand on his shoulder she stood beside him. “Are you okay Qrow?”
Why did I think this time would be any different?
His thoughts raced and his chest ached. Every moment his mind played its usual tricks, telling him that he should have seen this coming, should have known better. It was rare that anyone stuck around, that they didn’t see what a dark cloud he really was eventually. All he did was hurt people that got close, that he allowed to get close…
He should have known better by now.

Summer looked at him with a slight tilt of her head. “I know you’re still worried I’d be found out.” She smiled softly with the light shake of her head. “I think it is worth it, I’ve always thought getting to see you was well worth it.”

@thewhitepetalburst sent: “You clearly weren’t expecting me.”
If that wasn’t an understatement, but then again he rarely expected her anymore. Why she kept coming back, kept coming to him despite the great personal risk… it was a question he didn’t think he’d ever fully grasp the answer to that one.
“Can ya blame me?” he sighed, turning his attention to anything but her. “I thought we agreed that you bein’ out in the open was a bad idea still. I… I can’t look after you and the kids this way Sum.”
Yes, he still had it firmly planted in his head that he had to protect her, had to make up for his past failure. “You know seeing me isn’t worth risking yourself over.”

(From Qrow - qrowtheunlucky) “I am so, so sorry.”

@qrowtheunlucky
Summer sat in the darkness looking back towards the flames of the fire that the kids had started up a while before. She’d hidden herself off in the distance in the direction he’d come from. Summer glanced over with silver orbs and watched him curiously. “Sorry? For what?” It was then that she realized that he was blaming himself for her taking off and getting caught in Salem’s web. Hopping down out of the tree that she’d been sitting in Summer stood before him and placed her hand lightly against his cheek. “Qrow you don’t have to say your sorry, I’m the one who should be saying that remember?”
