Whumper has to be cruel because the system is cruel. They're high ranking, and are expected to rule with an iron fist. If they fail to do this, worse things will happen. They'll lose their position and won't be in a place try and control the damage anymore.

Whumpee is lower in the hierarchy. They work hard, keep their head down. The worst they've delt with is harsh words.

Behind closed doors? They are friends. The whumper is quite fond of them, and the whumpee returns that fondness.

But they aren't always behind closed doors.

One of whumpee's other friends makes a mistake. It happens fast, it happens public, and the only thing they can think to do is take the fall for it.

They claim responsibility and Beg to be punished instead.

The whumper does as requested, because it is the whumpee asking.

Punishment in public. They make an example out of the whumpee, because that is what is expected of them. To show the 'mercy' of letting them take their friend's punishment, the price is that the punishment itself has to be worse.

The wordless glance, the moment of resignation in them both. The whumper doesn't want this either. They're both trapped in this awful process that they can't escape from. Everyone is watching. This has to happen.

The whumper can't be anything less than a monster.

Then, headlights appear in the distance, making Whumpee squint as they grow nearer and brighter. Whumpee waves and the car pulls over. The person driving asks what happened, what they can do to help, etc. All Whumpee manages to get out before falling unconscious is Caretaker’s phone number.

Meanwhile, Caretaker is at home, either sound asleep in their bed with no idea anything has happened or pacing their living room trying to figure out how to get Whumpee back, when they get the call. An unknown number and a stranger’s voice. “I’ve got a person here, all they told me was your number, they’re not in a good way.” And Caretaker just sprints out the door to their car, mind running wild with the worst possible scenarios.

Humans don't bother being kind, unless they're forced by circumstances.

That was one of the earliest lessons Whumpee had learned in life. For a while, they didn't understand. They saw the winged creatures being treated with grace and affection, their food bowls always filled, their water always fresh, their feathers always clean and well-groomed. They didn't understand why their own cage was filthy, neglected, and way too crowded. What made them different?

The wings. It was all in the wings, those beautiful, precious, elegant wings. The difference was that those creatures would've been able to simply never return after a task. The humans could've let them fly, and they could've easily decided to land in a different human's garden, one that would treat them better. There were plenty of other owners out there, more than willing to purchase the most expensive seeds specifically to lure them in. To appease them. To convince them to stay.

Whumpee and their kind never had that luxury. They were stuck on the ground, easily captured, cornered and imprisoned. The humans never had to bother; even if Whumpee wanted nothing more than to never see the inside of that cage again, they had no other choice.

Ooooh that’s an interesting one. Let me give it a go.

Whumpee was supposed to assassinate someone but didn’t and their bosses eventually find out and punish them

The internal struggle of fighting years of training

The guilt and moral injuries they carry from everything they did as an assassin (and the depression that comes with it)

Bosses want whumpee back for “one more job”, and use blackmail or threaten them to get them to do it

Everyone in whumpee’s new life thinks they’re just pretty normal until they whip out some crazy skills and everyone is like wow

Whumpee being terrified to tell anyone in their new life what they used to do because 1. It could put them in danger and 2. What if they hate them for it

Someone from whumpee’s old life, maybe a relative of someone they killed, shows up for revenge

An old colleague needs help out of a sticky situation and threatens to reveal whumpee’s past to their new friends if they don’t help

Maybe whumpee received a lot of injures in their line of work and when people see their scars they start asking questions

Everyone kind of knowing there’s something dark in whumpee’s past but nobody being sure about what it is

Whumpee having PTSD from their experiences but not being able to tell anyone what from

People in whumpee’s new life slowly piecing together the story from snippets they get over time (stuff said during nightmares, people from their past showing up, odd behaviours, etc.)

Whumpee finally telling new caretaker about their past and being relieved as hell when caretaker understands and doesn’t just run for the hills

Maybe whumpee has permanent injuries from their past job they have to deal with constantly

The continued behaviours of their past life (sleeping with a gun by their bed, keeping a bag packed, checking for vantage points, etc.)

Someone shows up who whumpee owes a favour to and whumpee’s new friends get really concerned cause what could be serious enough that whumpee would drop everything to do that person’s bidding?

Fake relationship but it's a prisoner and a guard. The prisoner desperately needs some favours. The guard enjoys the "affection" and power play.

Until the guard starts falling for their own lies and starts thinking that maybe, they both mean it. They break out the prisoner to start a new life... what will the prisoner do, now that they are free and the guard whose whims they've had to entertain for so long is no longer protected by their surroundings?

Bonus (It Came To Me In A Dream): It's a fantasy death row, and the guards have some say over who gets to be this week's public entertainment on the gallows, making the whole thing a literal life-or-death matter for the prisoner...

"Come here." - Supervillain ordered as they lounged back in their chair. Their dark eyes bore into the slave that had been brought to their private chambers per their order.

Trembling, the slave moved closer, keeping their gaze low, at the other's feet. They stopped in front of the supervillain and proceeded to kneel the way they had been trained to do so, only to suddenly get grabbed by the collar of their torn-up shirt and dragged into the master criminal's lap.

A startled yelp slipped past their lips as their shaking hands landed on Supervillain's shoulders. Involuntarily, they made eye contact. The slave's every muscle tensed up in terror as they hurriedly looked away, but the supervillain roughly grabbed their chin and forced them to relock gazes.

"Are you going to be good~?" - the master criminal cooed, feigning gentleness. They ran their free hand through the slave's hair, making them shiver and bite back a whimper.

"Y-Yes, s-sir." - the slave answered meekly, breath hitching as the hand on their head tightened its grip without warning.

"Master." - Supervillain growled, secretly adoring the quiver of the other's bottom lip.

"M-Master! Y-Yes, Ma-ster!" - the slave corrected hastily, voice breaking with tears prickling their fearful eyes.

The supervillain grinned. "Good~," they purred, loosening their hold and petting the other's head. "We're gonna have loads of fun together, won't we?"

Gulping nervously, the slave muttered, "Y-Yes, Master..."
