I came back to Tumblr after a long, long break just to update my reading lists, to find that my posts are still being reblogged and liked! And that book of shadows post from YEARS ago is still going strong. Whew

Actually, one of the chief themes of ASOUE is that people are not good or bad at all, they are chef’s salads. His deeds are inexcusable. None of the Baudelaires’ misfortunes are going unrecognized. But Count Olaf was the way he was because of the abuse he himself suffered, and he was taken at a vulnerable time in his life (after the murder of his father) and manipulated. In the end of the series, the Baudelaires realized that. They saw that they themselves had done some things they weren’t proud of, and realized how easy it could be to slip into a life of starting fires. They may not have forgiven him for all he had done, but they recognized him still as a person who had been wronged, and who had lived a life of loneliness, heartbreak, and abuse. That’s why they buried him. Because he was still a person. And nobody is inherently good or bad.
olaf is the prime example of a genuinely bad character who did a few good deeds in his life and doesnt get redeemed because of it. the baudelaires did not mourn for him. they buried him because to them, they felt thats what they should do. they still hated him. count olafs ending is not an excuse to crown him your “uwu precious angel who was misunderstood.” he is a bad person who had a few good moments. dont romanticize his abuse of the baudelaires just because he carried kit to the island.
