❗️Protect public media - Call today, July 11, 2025
From the link above:
The Trump administration’s rescission package, H.R. 4, has passed in the House and now awaits a vote in the Senate where it will only need 50 votes to pass. Rescissions are a special budgetary procedure, initiated by a request from the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, that essentially cancels funds previously approved by Congress. This rescissions package requested by the Trump administration aims to codify DOGE cuts to public broadcasting, global health programs, and foreign aid funds totaling $9.4 billion. These cuts include:
$1.1 billion in funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting which disburses funds to NPR and PBS, two media organizations commonly targeted by Trump for being “radical, woke propaganda”.
This is an attack on the free press. Cutting a billion dollars from public media is also an attack on the public. They don’t want us to be informed, educated, or politically literate. If you have a vulnerable Republican Senator, now’s the time to speak up!

An important part of this article on how students are using AI to think and write for them - even when they’re supposed to be writing about a personal experience or assigned a simple task - is the intentionality with which AI companies are targeting younger and younger students, getting them hooked on having AI think for them until they reach the point where, as this teacher said, a senior in high school claimed he couldn’t write one sentence without using Grammarly. It’s alarming that this student has limited his own abilities in his mind to what a bot can do for him, even though the task is something even a small child can accomplish with effort. That’s like saying you can’t make a grocery list without AI - of course you can, if you choose to try, and you’d almost definitely do a better job.
From the article;
Unfortunately, it’s becoming harder to teach them that their ideas have value because they’ve subcontracted out their minds to their screens. They get their news on TikTok and YouTube and do their shopping based on ads they see in between the videos they watch.
One of my students told me there was no point to writing anymore for my class because now “AI just does it for us.” He doesn’t value the writing process because — despite how hard I’m trying — he’s constantly being bombarded with messages that he shouldn’t.
Whether it’s an advertisement for Grammarly on YouTube encouraging my students to add its new Chrome extension on their Google Docs or a video on TikTok enticing them to download the latest version of ChatGPT, my kids are constantly inundated with carefully curated messages that encourage them to be passive consumers in the classroom.
The messaging they receive is so strategically targeted to my students, it can give them a false sense of who they are, while at the same time increasing their dependence on these products.
It’s working. I see it every day. One of my 12th-graders told me he “can’t write even one sentence without Grammarly.”
“ChatGPT is right there with me all the time,” another student said, “like a friend.”
(…)
Educational institutions continue to uncritically embrace AI, moving at lightning speed to bring it into classrooms without thinking through its dangers, limitations and consequences. AI wasn’t designed for schools, yet we continue to operate as though it was.
Things are, however, looking great for Big Tech companies, who are earning billions of dollars to get our students to outsource their minds, thereby losing the ability to think critically.

Boston had a Pride parade and No Kings scheduled for the same day so it turned into “No Kings but Yaaaas Queen” “in joyous defiance of the mad king.”
A good reminder to have fun today!

To me this cover looks like an exploration of kink, a kind of tongue in cheek look at power dynamics between men and women through the lens of some form of bdsm.
I’m not convinced it’s designed to be a specifically feminist representation of women (although to me, women expressing sexual desire is a form of sexual liberation and feminism) nor is it a misogynistic representation of women unless you believe women being sexually submissive is inherently misogynistic.
I’ve just only seen two major arguments: that this is satire, which i don’t think it is, and that this is regressive misogyny, which I also think is inaccurate. My opinion on the second point is that Sabrina can’t set women back by making an album cover, she can’t depict herself using the male gaze (exclusive to men creating content of women), and she can’t change the way men sexualize her by catering to modesty. I don’t feel that women representing themselves as sexual beings reinforces the patriarchy.
I understand why to some young ppl who are seeing something like this for the first time it could feel jarring and you might have an instinctual emotional reaction to it. That could be a sign the content isn’t made for you. The juxtaposition of sex and violence can be jarring. Some ppl might be looking to explore sexual themes in a softer way and that’s ok! But I don’t think it’s ok to start hating on the artist or ppl trying to support the artist. I don’t think it’s ok to start moralizing sex and calling others bad ppl. And remember when you start to get to the “but think of the children!” part of an argument, you have often crossed into talking points that reinforce purity culture and conservatism.
Watch this video if you have time it’s a great exploration of sexual fantasy and morality and feminist history and it correlates super well to this discourse:

I actually cannot with gen Z being so damn prudish! What is going on with them? Why are they so into censorship??
There’s some online discourse about Sabrina carpenters new album cover and all these young ppl are like “it makes me uncomfortable!” Like ok good! It’s art! Art is supposed to be edgy and attention grabbing. It’s supposed to push boundaries. It’s supposed to make you feel uncomfortable sometimes! That’s not when you go ugh put that away I don’t want to look at it. It’s when you think introspectively about why it makes you feel that way and learn something about yourself! That’s the point of art!!!!

Updating to say he was released today! I’m sure there is more fight ahead for him and his family and they will need continued support but this was a big win for the community.
In a press conference Marcelo spoke about the conditions he had been kept in describing a tiny room with 40 men kept together, he had not been allowed to shower for the 6 days he was imprisoned, and they had to sleep on the concrete floor with a tinfoil blanket. That is deplorable. We treat animals better than that. We can’t stop demanding accountability from ICE and from this administration.
"Marcelo has no criminal history. His strong community ties, consistent academic achievement, and involvement in positive extracurricular and faith-based activities underscore the fact that he poses no danger to the community and is not a flight risk," [his lawyer] Nice said. "We are hopeful the court will recognize this, and grant his release on bond so Marcelo can return to his family and community. The actions by ICE do not make the community safer, they just sow fear among fear among immigrants and their loved ones."
In a Tuesday press conference, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed 'Operation Patriot,' an operation that saw ICE and federal partners arrest 1,461 people.
"More than half of the nearly 1,500 illegals arrested had significant criminal convictions or charges pending against them," Leavitt said. "I don’t think anybody in this room wants these types of heinous criminals in your communities."
ICE has not named or identified any of those arrested but says they include drug traffickers, sex offenders, murderers and foreign fugitives.
Nice said [18-year-old Marcelo] Gomes da Silva does not have any criminal history and came to the United States from Brazil on a student visa when he was 7.
It could not be clearer that this is and always has been an operation to remove brown people from this country. It has nothing to do with public safety, nothing to do with immigration policy, nothing to do with anything but cruel, violent bigotry.
There is simply no other feasible explanation for detaining an 18-year-old with no criminal history, kidnapping an innocent woman off the street, removing community members from their homes and jobs for no reason, dragging an innocent man through a shattered car window while his wife was informing ICE they had the wrong person (they did), or luring a woman out of her home to be arrested using her infant granddaughter as ‘bait’ - all things that ICE has done to innocent people in Massachusetts in the past 5 months - than that these are gleeful white supremacists who have been given free reign to violently harass and detain anyone who makes them feel uncomfortable for any reason - because they had tattoos, because they’re not white, because they yelled, because they wrote an op-ed.
I can’t personally remember our elected officials failing us quite this badly in recent history. Where the fuck are they? Why aren’t they following these guys around? Questioning them? Where are they coming from? Who do they report to? Why won’t they reveal their faces? Chase them out of the state! Step up and do something; these high school kids standing up for their friend are braver than most of our elected officials at the moment.
