fun fact: yumi first became a character when i started developing her for a fanfic

have some random headcanons revolving around love and relationships and all that stuff

yumi usually isn't a big fan of physical contact ― she doesn't particularly enjoy hugs or holding hands or whatever ― but with the right partner she doesn't mind. it's still rare for her to initiate it, but she doesn't mind it and in fact, even enjoys it

that said, the one physical touch she does do a lot and even initiates is sitting or standing close to her partner and leaning into their side if possible so they can wrap an arm around her waist or shoulders if they want to

her primary love language is definitely quality time. she loves spending time with her partner, doesn't matter if it's going on dates or just talking and doing nothing in particular; she loves to just be together

she is biromantic and bisexual but she doesn't really make a big deal out of it, it's just part of who she is, and either people accept it or they don't. and if they don't, they aren't really worth her time anyway

yumi cannot flirt. maybe it's because she's never been exposed to it but she struggles ... a lot. in a way, that's part of her charm

she's never really been in a relationship either. mainly because there's never been much of an opportunity to be in one; she was either on her own or part of the pirate crew ( who were mostly all older than her )

she doesn't believe in love at first sight. she rather wants to get to know someone and see if they're really compatible before ever deciding to potentially date them. even better? being ( best ) friends before dating

she is a sucker for heartfelt gifts ― giving and receiving. she loves picking out or creating the perfect gifts for her partner whether it's for a birthday or any other special occasion or just a random act of kindness, and obviously, she likes receiving them as well. especially when it's something handmade

she struggles to say "i love you" directly. instead, she beats around the bush, using other phrases and gestures to show her partner that she does, in fact, love them, but until she actually uses those words, a lot of time has passed and it's only when she feels 100% comfortable with them

she has no particular type when it comes to either men or women. however, she does gravitate to people who can make her laugh and make her feel appreciated. she also appreciates them being independent because even when she gets in a relationship, she still needs her moments of privacy and could never be with someone who is co-dependent with her and needs to be around her constantly. even in a relationship, she wants to be able to live her own life in a way

❛ because i can't leave! ❜ a simple statement, but one that holds so much power over her ― maybe a little too much. the truth is, she doesn't want to stay with the pirates. she'd much rather be back on her own, surviving on her own merits in the woods without having to be part of the crew, but she can't. she'd made a deal, either she could join them &&. use her talents for their profit, or they would hand her over to the fire nation soldiers who were still looking for her after all these years. so did she really have a choice?

she sighs, not sure how much of her history she really wants to reveal to someone she only just met recently. they are practically strangers, &&. she doesn't even like opening up to people she does know well ( not that there are many of these left nowadays anyway ) so she doesn't see a reason to tell her whole story to a random person. ❛ it's ... complicated, ❜ she finally says, voice sounding tired and a little defeated. ❛ and i know they aren't the best kind of people, but they are all i got. besides, once you join a pirate crew, you can't just desert them. ❜

there are dire consequences for those who do. she's seen what happened to people who tried, &&. she's not about to subject herself to that. even if she does want to leave them eventually, it's not something done lightly. there needs to be a well-thought-out plan with no chance of it going wrong. which seems like an almost impossible task.

so leave , he says. the boy makes it sound so simple and for a monk with few worldly attachments , it is. as long as he has his friends there are only two possible courses of actions when a situation sours : fix it or leave. this fundamental lack of understanding has the avatar's brows furrowing ; it takes a moment of reflection to prompt his nod of silent agreement and a soft smile that hopes to diffuse any building tension.

yumi may not always be too proud of the things she had to do to survive on her own, but she's very confident in her abilities ( maybe sometimes a little too much ). she knows she's a good thief and that she can get what she wants if she puts some effort into it. so she's not afraid to use those abilities she's learned to her advantage ― even if she doesn't particularly like it.

if there's one thing she's started to realize lately, it's that she doesn't work well in big groups. she's a lone wolf, someone who doesn't like having to rely on other people &&. being told what to do and when to do it. maybe it's because she's been on her own for so long that she forgot what it's like to be around people, to have friends, &&. so she sneaks off occasionally to get some private time. normally, this wouldn't be a problem ― no one had ever noticed her wandering off on her own for a few hours because she always did it when they were busy. but now, with toph and her seismic sense on the team, it had become more difficult, because she always noticed. it's frustrating. ❛ i just need some alone time, it's nothing personal against any of you. i'm not used to being around others all the time. so can you please not tell anyone when i'm going off on my own again? ❜

you know the drill, like this post for a short starter. might be a one - liner, might be a short para, but will definitely be something short and simple that can always evolve into something longer later.

currently thinking of a modern verse for yumi ... the only thing i got so far is that she and her mom were in an accident where their house burned down a little while after her father got sent to prison. her mother didn't survive, so yumi, scared and afraid, ran away. she's been living on the streets for a while, becoming way too adept at stealing and surviving on her own, until one day, she comes across the wrong people who literally and figuratively pick her off the street and make her steal for them. yumi lives a life of crime, and she actually becomes quite good at it, but deep down, all she wants is a normal and quiet life.

yumi has two main weapons she defaults to using: 1) her bow. it's one of the few things she still has from before she ran away, and she'd never forgive herself if she ever lost it. the bow once belonged to her father ( who is actually a trained former yuyan archer ) until he gifted it to her when she was nine years old. it's a simple wooden composite bow, and she has an old quiver that she once stole from a shop when she lost her old one. her arrows are stolen as well, but she tries to reuse them as often as possible. 2) her knife. it's surprisingly another gift, one that had been given to her by the earth kingdom family, who first took her in for a while after they found yumi collapsed in the woods. their son, cheng, who is just a few years older than yumi gave it to her when he noticed she was ready to run again. he told her to take good care of it and to use it to protect herself if necessary.

by now, she's gotten over the fact that her bending will always remain weak. it's never been her strong, and she's fine with it. there are other, arguably more useful skills she possesses ― weaponry, thievery ― she's never really felt like she's missing out on much. yet, there is still that childhood dream of her becoming a good bender &&. finding a teacher willing to help her. [ not that she's actively looking for one, because where is she supposed to find one anyway if she isn't willing to go to the poles? ] so when she runs into an actual waterbender, she's curious, &&. for once in her life, she throws caution to the wind as she approaches the woman standing near a river, manipulating the water in ways she's never seen before. ❛ how did you do that? and can you perhaps show me? ❜
