Aleheather was one of my very first and favorite couples when I was a child
Well, so I decided why not redraw the screenshots of one of my very first favorite couples with a new favorite couple
If it goes well, then I’ll make more of these redrawn later

julia angst is hitting hard on me
A Needlessly Complex Analysis of Julia's Backstory
Okay, a big chunk of the TDI fandom is going nuts over the Mkulia fuel that episode seven of season two gave us. I admit that I'm a part of that group. But something I haven't seen anyone talk about is the Julia lore we got, which (if you overanalyze it like I have) actually explains everything about why Julia is the way she is. Spoilers below the cut.
In episode seven Julia reveals she has baking skills that come from her being made to work at her parents' bakery every summer when she was a child. Given the bitterness in her tone and how she says she "only speaks to Greg and Judy through (her) lawyers now" it clearly wasn't something she enjoyed.
She also mentions that her parents actually named the bakery "Sweet Little Julia's." Again with the same bitter tone as the information above.
Now remember how Julia was at the start of the reboot; a social media influencer with a fake online persona that was all about good vibes and positivity. A fake personality that she absolutely hated. Although obviously distraught when the real her was exposed to her followers and they left in droves, Julia was thrilled to gain new followers that liked this new side of her, and was ecstatic that she was finally free to be her true self.
Put all of these together and you get my new headcanon for Julia's backstory: working at her parents' bakery not only involved kitchen duty but also marketing and interacting with customers as well, all while pretending to be "sweet little Julia" and basically denying Julia a proper childhood, something that would understandably cause a lot of resentment. Then in her teen years when Julia became an influencer, she did what she what she'd been taught to do: create a fake personality that was sweet and kind and likeable, because that's what Julia thought people wanted to see and would earn her likes and followers.
So Julia basically spent years pretending to be someone she wasn't and burying all of her true thoughts and emotions, which is why she was so quick and happy to embrace her role as a "villain" when she saw that being her true mean girl self earned her just as much - if not more - fame and admiration as her fake "sweet" persona.
And there you have it: my needlessly complex headcanon for Julia's backstory based entirely off one confessional. I may or may not try to work this into a fanfic at some point. Maybe a hurt/comfort fic where Julia vents about all of this to her girlfriend MK-

I’m over analyzing this scene to spread mkulia propaganda
But also I would like to show everyone that believes that MK and Julia don’t actually care for each other and would coldly betray each other The Scene from Episode 8.
The premise for this conversation is that in the last challenge, Chris broke the campers down into teams of three, two of which had a sabotage option and MK had an ultimately unhelpful advantage that a teammate chose. After being set back by the third team, Julia opted to use her sabotage on MK, who had a huge lead. Julia and her team ultimately won the challenge and immunity in part because of the sabotage.
The editing here is strange because Julia had an unrelated confessional, followed by a scene from Zee and confessional from him but the scene opens presumingly right after her confessional. It’s early morning and MK is right outside the confessional, claiming to have been looking for Julia all morning. From what we know of MK, she would not care to expend the energy looking for anything unless she thought it would give her an advantage. But no, she says she was looking for Julia specifically because she was anxious that Julia was avoiding her. Look at her face, she’s genuinely concerned when she says this; MK usually has some kind of sarcastic/snide remark when she’s not being serious.

Julia tries at first to laugh off the notion as if it’s no big deal, but she’s doing an unusually bad job at doing it. This is unusual for Julia because we know she knows how to act and play people, that’s all she did for the first half of the last season. But consider thematically that MK is the *reason* Julia got to be her authentic self after being ousted as a fraud and how Julia said it felt right to just be herself. It has to feel particularly wrong to lie to MK when the premise of their relationship is appreciating each other for their real selves.
Look at how quick Julia’s facade drops and MK’s face knowing it’s a lie:

MK, who again, has a tendency to make sarcastic remarks, just says “So, yes,” when Julia tries to deny avoiding her. Then she glances away like this before trying to reassure Julia that she’s not mad:

She actually looks uncomfortable, like she’s not used to having to reassure people like this and she’s generally awkward trying to get the words out. If MK didn’t care, if she was lying about actively looking for Julia, she easily could’ve scripted this out and throw in her signature snarking humor. We know from her audition tape that she’s also good at being sneaky and we know from past episodes that she enjoys seeing people squirm, but there’s no indication she’s enjoying this conversation.
What her assurance essentially breaks down to is saying she’s not mad at Julia for using her sabotage on her. After she says this she pauses because she spots Zee shenanigans behind Julia but tries to refocus but we see Julia give MK this look:

It’s a very subtle detail but Julia slightly lifts her head and raises her eyebrows. She looks like she can’t believe someone is actually forgiving her despite doing what any other person on the island would perceive as a backstabbing. Considering the ruthless way she played last season and her strategy to just keep winning immediately, it could be argued that she was just worried she burned a bridge and would have to do it again. But if that was the case, she wouldn’t just be silently listening to what MK had to say, she’d just go back to being The Mean Girl.
But she doesn’t and MK begins to elaborate that she thinks they make a great team and she begins to say “All I want is for—” before total drama does what it does and undercuts the moment with Zee’s shenanigans. It being these two though, I can’t imagine MK saying something too sentimental though and it’s clearly water under the bridge as they immediately agree to mess with Zee and are back to doing confessionals together.
I could go on and on about different scenes that reinforced this one. I just totally refute the idea that they aren’t genuine with each other because they have what feels like the most planned out dynamic of the new generation. It’s not out of character for these two to have gotten along so quickly or for them to care about each other like this.
We’re just watching a yuritastic slow burn.

crying i love them
please do u have any mkulia headcanons i am starving
Ah fuck, I’m typing this on my phone so forgive if formatting is weird
I don’t think MK doesn’t know how to flirt but I don’t think she’s tried before so she’s probably not the best at it. But also I don’t think Julia cares because she’s so head over heels.
MK helps Julia cyber bully people from her sock puppet accounts. They think up insults together.
I kinda alluded to this in the tags of an rb but I believe with my whole heart that MK can carry Julia.
Julia steals MK’s beanie sometimes, but, like, affectionately.
I imagine Julia to be very touchy and affectionate (like social girls in high school are) but like half of it is leftover from her influencer habits and the other half is intentional and flirty. Good luck figuring out which is which, MK
I can imagine Julia wearing MK’s jacket, like, once and neither of them recovering
Julia takes selfies of them all the time but MK doesn’t particularly like posing for photos so Julia’s stealth about it
They don’t let each other live S1 down. “You got me voted out” or “You outed me as mean to all my followers” gets brought up regularly
Admittedly, I think this one is a little cliche but I do think MK is the big spoon, if only because she insists on it

I have a red-string cork board in my brain dedicated to why MK and Julia WILL form an alliance. The main points being:
they both explicitly say they're glad they didn't make any friends
they both relied on a facade in the first half of the first season and neither of them can rely on that facade the second time around
Both probably would think the other could be easily played and that they can throw the other under the bus any time they wanted.
their interactions would be funny.
the confession part of this is that if it does happen I'll be unbearable about how I predicted it and if it doesn't happen I'll say it was a dumb-ass theory anyway.
