The Velvet Club, better known as The Velvets, is the nickname given to an all-girl friend group in Hawkins. The friend group currently consists of nine people: Jo 'Kathryn' Miyeon, Nancy Wheeler, Yu 'Jennifer' Ruoxi, Kelly Miller, Mandal ‘’Maggy’ Magha, Nikita Smith, Fan Aruna, Qian 'Lori' Yinuo, and Robin Buckley. All members currently attend Hawkins High.

Their name was given by their peers, they first started to be called 'The Velvets' in 1983 when the friend group consisted of only five people: o 'Kathryn' Miyeon, Nancy Wheeler, Yu 'Jennifer' Ruoxi, Kelly Miller, and Mandal 'Maggy' Magha. The name refers to their classy and mature appearance. When they first noticed the name, they started wearing coordinated velvet outfits for notable events.

The friend group started with Barbara Holland, Kathryn Jo, and Nancy Wheeler. The trio had been friends since middle school and were extremely close. In November 1982, Barbara Holland went missing. The disappearance caused a fight between Kathryn and Nancy that quickly got resolved as they decided to look for their missing friend. The friend group headed into 1983 as a duo. Very quickly, a future addition to the friend group started to come into the picture; she was Jennifer Yu. By April 1983, Jennifer had made her way into the friend group. It did not take long for two more people to join the friend group, Kelly Miller and Mandal Magha. The five of them knew each other because they were all on the student council together. They spent a lot of time together and comforted Kathryn and Nancy during Barbara’s disappearance. They stayed as five for a long time, the next additions only coming into the picture in 1984. The group had befriended a girl named Nikita Smith, who was in a grade below all of them. Nikita introduced the five to her two friends, Fan Aruna and Qian Lori, during lunch once. After that, they decided to have lunch together more often, and before anyone knew it, the three had become part of The Velvets. The last addition, Robin Buckley, only became part of the friend group after spring break in 1985.

The Velvets are both feared and loved at school. All of them are known for being the very best, or at least part of that very best. They intimidate a huge portion of the freshmen, but are generally friendly with most people their age. They're not at the top of the high school food chain; pretty much everyone knows not to mess with them. The Velvets have something very special about them, the fact that pissing them off does not mean that you'll get beat up or gossiped about. But instead, they will take money out of your club's funding and put it into something else. They don't do this all too often, but sometimes the football and basketball team piss them off a bit too hard.

The group is typically split up into two different groups: Sugar and Spice. The Sugars are known for being their sweet, can't-do-anything-bad princesses. The girls in this group are Kathryn Jo, Mandal Magha, Nikita Smith, Qian Lori, and Fan Aruna. The Spices are known for either their intimidating appearance and/or savage personalities. The girls in this group are Nancy Wheeler, Jennifer Yu, Kelly Miller, and Robin Buckley.

⌕ Jo 'Kathryn' Miyeon, Hawkins's Angel ᎒

Kathryn Jo was born in '67 as the only child of a wealthy family, her father being a retired componist turned high school teacher and her mother being a florist. Kathryn was born in South Korea to her Korean-American parents. Her family moved to New York City when she was six. She lived and went to school there until the age of thirteen, when her father retired from his music career and moved to a small town in Indiana with his family. It is said that he wanted to live a quieter, more normal life with his family. Kathryn has been attending Hawkins High ever since. She quickly got known around the school for being the daughter of a teacher, being incredibly smart, and having a beautiful singing voice. Her voice, unique appearance, and loving personality made everyone give her the nickname: 'Hawkins's angel'. Kathryn is generally loved around the school, but that does not mean that there aren't people who badmouth her every chance they get to do so. Most of these people are on the sports teams, such as the wrestling team and the football team. Kathryn is notorious for trying to get the student council to invest more in the science and art clubs.

As of season four, Kathryn Jo is the current student council president. Ever since she entered high school, she has been part of the student council, and when her senior year came rolling around, she decided to go for student council president. The year before, she was the student council vice-president and art representative. Kathryn is a senior at Hawkins High and the top student in her grade. She often gives out tutor sessions for students who ask for them. She is secretly going out with Eddie Munson, the freak of Hawkins, as he is regularly called.

⌕ Nancy Wheeler, Little Miss Perfect ᎒

Nancy Wheeler was born in '67 in Hawkins, Indiana, and has continued to live there for her whole life. Nancy was the first child of Karen and Ted Wheeler, and she would later be joined by younger siblings Mike (1971) and Holly (1980). She suspected her parents never truly loved one another, and that they married solely to create a 'perfect nuclear family'. As Nancy and Mike grew up, Nancy became distant from Mike and his friends, although they were close at some point. By the time Nancy attended Hawkins High School, she had become best friends with Barbara Holland and Kathryn Jo. Nancy quickly became known around school for her good grades and hardworking personality. Her squeaky clean image and good girl appearance made everyone give her the nickname: 'Little Miss Perfect'. Things, however, started to change when Nancy started dating Steve Harrington. She became more popular and continued to stay by his side until November 1983. Nancy Wheeler started dating Jonathan Byers and became known around the school as 'Nancy The Slut Wheeler'. She tried to not put any focus on it, deciding to put more focus on school and her dreams.

As of season four, Nancy has become the vice-president of the student council and the head of the newspaper club. She has made it her mission to make the newspaper of their school the best one that has ever existed. She has become a lot more comfortable thanks to her many friends. Nancy broke up with Jonathan due to their long-distance relationship not working out. While Nancy acts like she isn't interested in relationships, her best friend, Kathryn, knows how much Nancy is struggling with her feelings toward Jonathan Byers, Steve Harrington, and Robin Buckley.

⌕ Yu 'Jennifer' Ruoxi, Hawkins's Queen ᎒

Jennifer Yu was born in '67 in Hong Kong as the oldest daughter. She has three little sisters (1970, 1977 & 1980). She lived in Hong Kong with her family until 1982, when they migrated to America. Jennifer found it quite hard to make friends in Hawkins, due to her being new to American society and her sassy, rich girl personality clashing with the small town feel of Hawkins. She quickly found a place in the student council and honor society, where she met Barbara Holland, Kathryn Jo, and Nancy Wheeler. Jennifer quickly became known around the school as Hawkins's queen. She practically ran the school during her junior year, getting the title 'ice queen' from there. Jennifer is more feared around the school than she is liked; she likes to keep most people at a distance. Her resting bitch face makes sure that most people, get out of her way or try to not upset her. Jennifer is okay with this; she sees herself as better than most people at school (one of the few exceptions being her friends, The Velvet Club, of course). Do not mistake her as rude, though, she can be a real bitch sometimes. But beneath that hard exterior is a sweet, sensitive girl.

As of season 4, Jennifer has remained the treasurer of the student council. Her throne of being the Queen of Hawkins has just been overthrown by Chrissy Cunningham. Many think that Jennifer is angry about this, but the truth is that she couldn't care less. She never even wanted to be the queen. Jennifer has said that she wants her senior year to be a year for herself; she desperately wants to move far away from Hawkins. Her current dream is to go to Yale University.

⌕ Kelly Miller, The Velvets Captain ᎒

Kelly Miller was born in '67 in Hawkins, Indiana, and has continued to live there her whole life. She is the only child of the former major and a housewife. Kelly has always been known by other people as an ambitious person. She has always been excellent at sports, arts, and academics. Kelly, just like all the Miller's, is very competitive. She doesn't like losing at all and has made many enemies at school so far. Most of which were made during her reign as school council president. Kelly was vice-president in her freshman year and school council president twice. Out of everyone in The Velvet Club, she's probably the most popular with the other students. Kelly is seen as the 'Captain of the Velvets' or 'The Velvet Captain'. She often plans activities, represents them due to her popularity, and often stands in the middle during group pictures.

As of season 4, Kelly has decided to not enter the competition for school council president for the very first time. She has said that it is because she wanted Kathryn, who was her running mate & the vice-president the previous year, to be the new president. Kelly is now the secretary and school spirit director in the student council. She has expressed interest in studying law after high school at an Ivy League school. She spends most of her time studying to make sure that she actually has a shot at doing so.

⌕ Mandal ‘Maggy’ Magha, A Million Bucks ᎒

Mandal ‘Maggy’ Magha was born in '67 in the United Kingdom. Magha is a Bengali-Muslim. Her parents migrated to the UK, and when she became five, they moved to Hawkins, Indiana. Magha’s dad is a surgeon, and her mother is a dentist; their family is filthy rich. Magha is an only child and is treated like a princess by her parents. She knows her worth and doesn't settle for anything less. Magha enjoys the finer things in life, often going on expensive trips, treating her friends to dinner at a Michelin restaurant, having the newest cars, and having the most luxurious clothes. People typically think of her as a stupid, rich girl. But Magha proves them wrong daily; she is an honor society student, has been the school council events director for her whole high school career, and she's amazing at sports. Magha is known around Hawkins High as 'A Million Bucks' as they all know that she's going to make it.

As of season 4, Magha is still thriving. She's living her life the best she can. She's currently the student council events director and has already been accepted to Stanford University to study International relations and affairs. Magha decided to spend her senior year just enjoying the last months that she has left in Hawkins.

⌕ Nikita Smith, Sun Of Hawkins ᎒

Nikita Smith was born in '68 in Hawkins, Indiana, and has continued to live there her entire life. Nikita comes from a middle-class family; her dad is an optician and her mother is an elementary school teacher. Nikita has two older brothers (1966 & 1967), who both also attend(ed) Hawkins High. Nikita has always been a loved member of the Hawkins community. Her smile is incredibly contagious; she has had the title of 'Best Smile' since she was practically born. Nikita is often called 'The Sun Of Hawkins' because of this. She's famous for her beauty and extroverted personality. She used to be a beauty pageant contestant when she was younger and won many competitions. Nikita has been a cheerleader ever since she came into high school. At first, her goal was to become the queen of Hawkins High, but after seeing how everyone else was obsessed with it, she decided to put her focus elsewhere.

As of season 4, Nikita Smith is still a member of the Tigers Cheer Squad and has become the club representative in the student council. She's a junior and still has time to figure her future out. Right now, she just wants to enjoy her youth by partying and meeting new people. Nikita is known for throwing amazing parties and also planning fun trips for The Velvet Club to go on.

⌕ Fan Aruna, The Favorite ᎒

Fan Aruna was born in '70 in Hawkins, Indiana. She moved to the city back in elementary school and only came back to Hawkins during high school. Aruna had a difficult time adjusting to her old environment; she had truly become a city girl and spent most of her first summer hanging out at the mall, as it reminded her of it. That's where she befriended her first friend, Stacy Albright. The two did not stay friends for very long. When Stacy's smoothie blew up in her face, Aruna tried her best to help Stacy clean up in the bathrooms. It ended up resorting to Stacy and her friends believing that Aruna had rigged the smoothie with something. They said it was because she wanted to get closer to Stacy and thought that by helping her, they would become best friends. A day later, they pulled a prank on Aruna at school and laughed it in her face. It was Lori and Nikita who helped her up and cleaned her up in the bathrooms. The three have been inseparable ever since. When Aruna befriended the rest of The Velvet Club, it became very clear to everyone at school that Aruna was their baby. They decided that they must protect her at all costs and will fight anyone who makes her cry. Therefore, she was dubbed 'The Favorite'.

As of season 4, Fan Aruna has become the school's track star while being just a sophomore. Aruna is very popular due to her accomplishments in track and her extroverted personality. She's friends with most people in her grade and the freshmen, as she is part of the yearbook committee.

⌕ Qian 'Lori' Yinuo, Fairy Of Hawkins ᎒

Qian Yinuo, better known as Lori, was born in '69 in Los Angeles, California. She lived there up until she entered high school. Lori's parents are lawyers and are often out of town; she spends most of her time alone at home due to this. Lori used to have a nanny as a child, but now, as a teen, she spends most of her time playing her instruments, watching TV, and painting. In her freshman year, she joined the drama club and gained popularity among her peers for her role as Thumbelina in the school's play Thumbelina. It was rare for a freshman to get the main role, but everyone could agree that Lori was a talented actress. She quickly became known as the 'Fairy of Hawkins' thanks to this role and her cute and whimsical visuals. Yinuo's first friend at Hawkins was Nikita, who came to sit with her while she was sitting alone at lunch. It didn't take long for her to make more friends after meeting Nikita.

As of season 4, Lori has become the head of the drama club and joined the student council as the art representative, taking over Kathryn Jo's position. Lori is a sophomore; she still has a lot of time to figure her future out and isn't thinking about it too much at the moment. She does spend a lot of time hanging out with her senior friends. Lori has said that she's going to miss them a lot when they graduate, especially Kathryn Jo, who has become like an older sister to her.

⌕ Robin Buckley, Little Einstein ᎒

Robin Buckley was born in '68 in Hawkins, Indiana, and has continued to live there her whole life. She has always been a very active girl, taking up a lot of hobbies. She learned how to play the horn and various other instruments at the age of five, was on the soccer team, learning and becoming fluent in multiple languages. This explains her nickname, 'Little Einstein'. When Robin began attending Hawkins High School, where she was labeled a band dweeb. She knew of students such as Nancy Wheeler (who she labeled a priss) and Steve Harrington (who she labeled a douchebag), though neither one of them would acknowledge her existence. The two people who did acknowledge her were her middle school friend, Kathryn Jo, and Kat's girlfriend, Barbara Holland. When Barbara Holland went missing, Robin told the police that she probably just ran away. She knew that Kathryn and Barbara were planning on moving out of Hawkins after graduating. Kathryn lost contact with Robin during this time. The two friends regained contact while trying to figure out the Russian code, Dustin had picked up.

As of season 5, Robin Buckley is a junior in high school. She became part of The Velvet Club after the spring break. She is the top student of her year, having a 4.3 GPA and still being a part of the band.
