Currently Reading: In Limbo

The story is YA. It’s a really relatable story about a young Korean-American girl who just entered high school and is struggling to find herself and is dealing with a lot of stress and feeling not her best. She isn’t shining as bright as she did when she was in elementary school and she is suffering through a lot of internal and external pressure. The art matches her emotional landscape, it is all this blue and white dry styling and it’s gorgeous, emotive, and very well executed.

Yo, every time I see these dudes I get the willies. I really am enjoying reading this comic. Ed Brubaker is one of my favorites. The storyline is so good! And the art Chef’s Kiss! The panel below literally scared the fuck out of me.

Currently Reading: Beyond Real

Yo this Beyond Real comic series is bomb. Like the artwork is stunning. It’s next level. I’ve been feasting with the colors. The colourist is untouchable. They are really some people who are living in another universe when it comes to how they see things and honestly this is that universe. There’s so much intricate detailing in this series. I just wish the story was as good as the art because it’s not, but overall this art is insane. I don’t know enough about the characters in the series even after reading three issues to really care about them. I know that this black woman who looks like Zendaya actually is like trying to save her boyfriend? husband?…I don’t know.. from dying. He’s in a coma so she steps into this other realm and other universe to go seek out the source code to go and hopefully negotiate with them to save his life, which is interesting conceptually but I just wasn’t really maybe it’s the art being too good for the story I don’t know overall the art is got me like from the first issue it had me in a chokehold!
Look at these panels oh my God killer killer work!

Went back to this book today because I cannot resist how great it is and I recognized that — the discourse around Sabrina Carpenter is unoriginal. Is Sabrina Carpenter really doing anything that’s much different from what Madonna did in her heyday? I don’t think so! I think that everyone has found a niche, but in reality— they’re really all just mimicking the greats. And yeah we can’t hate them for that! This book is still really good. I also have a high urge to watch both Pretty in Pink starring Molly Ringwald and Desperately Seeking Susan!

Evening Reads — Madonna, the Illustrated Biography
I’m having a lot of fun right now reading this book it’s available to be read on Internet archives and honestly I have a copy of this book I had bought it maybe almost 13 years ago now when I was working for HMV — but I didn’t want to pull it off my shelves so I decided to read the digital scans and it brought me back to this controversial video from Madonna’s first MTV Music Awards performance which basically set the stage for the show for the infinite future—
youtube
I love that everything exists on YouTube. It’s pretty amazing. So I gave this a watch because I was inspired and it was worth the 3 mins! Check the comments too to get your life! Madonna really is one of a kind, and no matter what she’s doing now, her impact on the culture is infinite. Everyone is channelling Madonna, Grace Jones, Cher, and Diana Ross and will be channelling them forever.

Currently Reading: Hip Hop (and other things) by Shea Serrano
Shea Serrano loves Lauryn Hill. In the book he talks about how incredible of an artist she is he also talks about the struggles towards the beginning of her career when she was performing at the Apollo and she was 13 years old and she was booed and she had finished up the song and performance. Then he references the above clip where a few years later Lauryn returns to the Apollo with the Fugees and they’re kind of their vibing out on the stage, but the crowd is not getting as hyped as they need to be. Wyclef stops the show and encourages Lauryn to hit a few bars. She freestyles a little bit and it changes the entire dynamic of the show and creates a new experience. Shea talks about how impactful this performance was in the context of her previous experience, and just now I was rolling through YouTube and stumbled across it and honestly it is as magical as he described in the book. Enjoy.

Middle of the Night Read —
I haven’t been on a dating app in years. I could never torture myself like that. Plus, no comment! LOL! Anyway, when I was that bitch, I had a rule. I had to meet the person right away or we’d never meet/speak again. That sounds crazy but who’s got time to waste! Not I. Thank god that shit is over for me. Anyway, this was a really interesting story.
