The Carmelite May 16th, 1928, Carmel-by-the-Sea California
Later in his life, after the 1906 earthquake and fire which devastated San Francisco, James Franklin Devendorf used his power as a developer to offer artists lots in Carmel-by-the-Sea for a mere ten dollars (about $3,550 in today's money) down and "whatever they could pay per month, often at no interest" according to an article by Barbara J.
