Pochampally Saree from Telangana
Pochampally originates from the area of Bhoodan Pochampally in the state of Telangana. These sarees are characterized by Ikkat print of dying a garment. In this method, the dye is prevented from spreading all across the fabric and helps to create patterns and motifs.
Origin & History Resist dyeing (Ikkat) is the oldest technique of dying which is also found in ancient Egypt. In this technique, strips are soaked in wax and then designs are scratched on to them. These strips are then dyed. Once the dye is fixed then the wax is washed off. This dyeing technique was used by Chinese and may have been introduced to India via silk route
The Making The fabric is hand woven. The difference between the other fabrics and Pochampally is the warps and wefts threads are colored first and then the loom is used to create the fabric. Ikkat in these Pochampally sarees is carried out with Batik and wax. Batik is a technique of creating dots and lines with a sharp tool known as canting. The resist is printed with the help of copper stamp called the cap. The wax resists the spread of dye and thus patterns are created.
Care / Maintenance The best way to maintain this type of saree is to get it dry-cleaned. This preserves the tie-dye effect for longer and does not contribute to a faded look in the future
