Brief cozy moment before the big three day cross country move next week. Very drafty first draft of chapter 14 (The Two Coffins) is where we’re at right now.

Since we’ve passed this point now as of the last chapter, figured I’d share one of my Original Very Important story outline notes from prior to posting chapter 1.

“(Separately, at different points of the story)

Dick: Welp. He’s my kid now.

Jason: he’s my kid now.

Bruce: he’s my kid now.”

I’ll post a snippet when the chapter is closer to being finished.

ETA: very much afraid this chapter will end up being the “Return of the King: Director’s Cut (extended edition)” length rivaling the gala scene chapter.

Proposal for new fandom etiquette:

Please have a moment of silence for the people who were killed instead of freed when news of emancipation finally reached the furthest corners of the american south.

have another moment for the ledgers, catalogs, and records that were burned and the homes that were destroyed to hide the presence of very much alive and still enslaved people on dozens of plantations and homesteads across the south for decades after emancipation.

and have a third moment for those who were hunted and killed while fleeing the south to find safety across the border, overseas, in the north and to the west.

black people. light a candle, write a note to those who have passed telling them what you have achieved in spite of the racist and intolerant conditions of this world, feel the warmth of the flame under your hand, say a prayer of rememberance if you are religious, place the note under the candle, and then blow it out.

if you have children, sit them down and tell them anything you know about the life of oldest black person you've ever met. it doesn't have to be your own family. tell them what you know about what life was like for us in the days, years, decades after emancipation. if you don't know much, look it up and learn about it together.

Unfortunately most I can’t remember or never knew! I love taking pictures of all the cats and dogs I run across, and if they don’t have a person attached, then they keep their True Names to themselves. Though I imagine they consider themselves to be names like RatAnnihilator and WarmSunbeam and FuckAllTheWayOff.

I used to do a #dogoftheday when I lived in CA, so you’ll probably see a lot of those at some point. Most of the ones I’ve been posting, like the cat chilling above, have been from my time volunteering at the Catfe Lounge, a cat cafe that is part of the Ferndale Cat Shelter in Ferndale, MI. If you’re in the Detroit metro area definitely stop by and support their mission! I’ve also featured cats from other cat cafes I’ve visited elsewhere in the country, and I encourage you to find one near you because what could be better than hanging out with a hot beverage and cute kitties?

Some of the others are friends’ animals, and I’ll probably post pictures of my animals who have crossed the rainbow bridge, too.

Quite a few of the others are neighborhood free range cats, which I don’t advocate for because of safety issues, but do enjoy having encounters with on the day to day.

My favorite ever of these is one I do know the name of: Midnight Bear.

When we rented the ground floor of a house in a nice neighborhood off Woodward and 10 Mile, Midnight Bear loved to come and sit on our porch chairs when the weather was nice in the summer. He would also put his paws up on the screen door and meow to be let in.

I of course happily let him come in and visit. He’d walk around and sniff and chill for a bit, and when he was done he’d put his paws up on the door again (pictured) and continue visiting the rest of the neighborhood. I miss him! He was a great cat to have as a neighborhood guardian spirit blessing us with kitty visits.

Almost done with the first draft of Puzzles chapter 13!

After the first draft, I reread it and go through about four times; drafting for emotional through lines, plot through lines, phrasing and word choices, and grammar and spelling. Though no matter how many times I go through I always find mistakes and typos later. (I’m still writing on a phone and autocorrect continues to be the bane of my existence.)

Thank you for being patient! Here’s another snippet in the meantime:

Though Tim isn’t really hungry, he doesn’t object. Dick leaves him to his own devices with a whistle to Ace, who reluctantly wriggles free of the sheets, gives a moaning stretch, and jumps off the bed to follow Dick, tail gently wagging.

A few minutes later finds Tim freshly changed into his single remaining outfit. It’s deeply crumpled from being stuffed in the bottom of his backpack, but it’s his, and still holds the familiar smell of the Drakes’ laundry detergent. Tim opens the door to make his way to the kitchen and nearly jumps out of his skin, startled by loud chimes.

Looking down, he finds a set of jingle bells has been securely wrapped around the outside of the doorknob.

The door to the room on Tim’s left opens immediately, Jason’s head popping out to clap suspicious eyes on Tim.

“I don’t need an alarm. I’m not trying to escape,” Tim says, annoyed.

“You’re dam- you’re darn skippy you’re not,” Jason says, catching up to Tim and crossing his arms over his t-shirt, which reads River City Pool Hall: Ragtime Music & Scarlet Women.

Tim deciding to put a piece of paper with the Robin logo on it over the Batman symbol on the chair is already amazing (did he draw that? print it out?) but I like how Dick also specifically chose to sit in it while visiting during the parent teacher conference even though he didn't have to. "oh cool Tim made a Robin chair I gotta use it"

Now a new study looking at 400,000 youths from 88 countries around the world suggests such bans are making a difference in reducing youth violence. It marks the first systematic assessment of whether an association exists between a ban on corporal punishment and the frequency in which adolescents get into fights.

The way Damian would definitely talk about his pets as if they were humans and confuse the hell out of everybody.

Damian: Father, I won't attend dinner today. I promised Lucy I would make more time for her, so we'll be spending the evening together.

Bruce, confused: Lucy? I thought you were dating that Nika girl.

Damian, now confused as well: Flatline? I am dating her. Why?

Bruce, slowly going from confused to disapproving: Damian, I try not to meddle in your personal relationships, but you can't be asking other people out if you're already–

Tim: Oh my god, Bruce. He's means Lucy the monkey.

Damian: She's a macaque.

*After patrol*

Damian: I'll be leaving. I need to pick up the cake for Jerry's birthday party. Nightwing, you promised Jerry you'd come. I don't want you to hurt his feelings so you better–

Nightwing: Yeah, yeah. I know, I'll be there

Damian: *nods and leaves*

Red Hood:

Nightwing:

Red Hood: Is he talking about the–

Nightwing: The turkey. Yes. He's talking about the turkey.
